over 500,000 residents of a large swath of northwestern Ohio were still without drinkable water early Monday (8/4), after a dangerous toxin was discovered late last Friday (8/1) in an area water treatment plant.
Tests conducted Friday night and early Saturday indicated is contaminated with microcystin toxin, a product of burgeoning "blue-green algae" blooms on Lake Erie.
Hours after news of the contamination surfaced, Gov. John Kasich (DIPWAD-OH) declared a state of emergency for Lucas, Wood and Fulton counties and deployed the National Guard to get water to the area. He pledged that state agencies were working to bring water and other supplies to areas around Toledo while also assisting hospitals and other businesses impacted. The state also was making plans to make more
Homes and businesses with wells deeper than 200ft are apparently not yet affected, officials stated.
"What's more important than water? Water's about life," Kasich said. "We know it's difficult. We know it's frustrating."
The governor said it was too early to say how long the water advisory will last or what caused toxins to spike suddenly in the drinking water.
"We don't really want to speculate on this," Kasich told the Associated Press. "When it comes to this water, we've got be very careful."
Samples of water were flown to the federal and state Environmental Protection Agency offices in Cincinnati and Columbus and a university in Michigan for additional testing, officials said.
News of the contaminated water touched off a shopping frenzy at area stores for bottled water and bags of ice. Shelves were emptied of bottles and other water supplies, as residents prepared for the worst. Stores in cities up to 50 miles away were reporting shortages of bottled water.
"It looked like Black Friday," said Aundrea Simmons, who stood in a line of about 50 people at a pharmacy before buying four cases of water.
"First and foremost, residents must remain calm," Toledo Mayor Michael Collins said at a morning press conference.
Toledo officials issued the warning early Saturday after tests at the city's Collins Park Water Treatment Plant showed two sample readings for microcystin above the standard for consumption. The plant provides treatment services to an area of more than 400,000 people across 100 square miles, according to The Toledo Blade.
Officials said the water is not for drinking or cooking but healthy adults could still use the water for bathing. They warned children not to bathe or swim in it, as they might drink the water accidentally. Residents were warned not to boil the water because it will only increase the toxin's concentration. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and upset stomach.
In a news release, the city of Toledo said the toxins likely came from harmful algae blooms in nearby Lake Erie.
"These organisms are capable of producing a number of toxins that may pose a risk to human and animal health," the release said.
Area zoos and restaurants closed, and the University of Toledo announced it will be closed Saturday and all non-health-care functions canceled. Toledo Lucas-County Public Libraries also announced closings.
Essentially, the whole area is shut down.
Collins said the city hoped to know Saturday night how long the warning will stay in place, and he pleaded with residents not to panic. There were no reports yet of people becoming sick from drinking the water, Collins said.
Meanwhile, other municipalities were making their own arrangements. Luna Pier, MI, officials were making plans to funnel water from Monroe Township, according to the Free Press. Fire trucks will pick up the water and residents will be able to fill water bottles after noon Saturday.
Operators of water plants all along Lake Erie, which supplies drinking water for 11 million people, have been concerned over the last few years about toxins fouling their supplies.
Almost a year ago, one township just east of Toledo, told its 2,000 residents not to drink or use the water coming from their taps. That was believed to be the first time a city has banned residents from using the water because of toxins from algae in the lake.
Most water treatment plants along the western Lake Erie shoreline treat their water to combat the algae. Toledo spent about $4 million last year on chemicals to treat its water and combat the toxins.
And now Florida's northeastern Gulf waters are getting the "red tide algae" bloom, which will kill millions of fish and affect their drinking water, too.
As of 11:30am on Monday 8/4, the idiot mayor of Toledo has declared all drinking water to be "safe", in the affected area. We'll see, dumbass. $15 says no cases of algae poisoning will be reported, at the dipwad mayor's orders; Lord help that area if people and animals die from the lifting of the "all clear order".
Is the "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the same algae-fungal blooms which caused the Lake Erie problem? Who knows? But you can bet your life that the left-wing-wacko-controlled EPA will link the two, and issue severe, punishing and crippling (runoff) regulations, restrictions and fines, which help to destroy American agriculture, energy and society, even more than it has so far. A Day In The Life
The garbage truck woke me at 6:30am on Friday morning, but heck, it was time to get up anyway. I had some pretty severe left arm/bicep-tendon pain, so I ate 4 Bayer® 325mg Aspirin, along with my morning BP meds, splashed my face to wake-up, and trundled downstairs to get some coffee, and OJ. At 67°F, I needed neither heat nor AC, so all was fine as I checked weather, news and email. I left at 9am for some errands, then stopped at Dad's to get a few minor outdoor projects done, visit for a while, and was back home by 12:30pm. High for the day was 81°F, but a mild one and overcast. I have some things to unpack, Condo chore to finish from yesterday and another batch of bills to write checks for, so I got to it. For a late lunch, I made Eggs Benedict & Fries Potatoes, put the heating pad on my left arm, ate a handful of aspirin and finished the tasks. High for the day was 81°F,
I slept-in until almost 8:30am on Saturday, another cloudy day, forecast for t-storms which didn't materialize, had coffee and OJ, Eggs Benedict w/ Ham Steak & Homefries, and decided to get some bills to the USPS, run a few errands and wash the Jeep. High for the day was 75°F. After getting back around 11:30am, I stumbled on to a new NatGeoTV series, called "Wild Justice", and spent much of the afternoon half-watching episodes (in season one) while doing some light Condo chores, due to my sore arm and forearm muscles/tendons. After some aspirin, strapping-on the heating pad, I closed-down, armed the place and went to sleep at 11:45pm. If I'm feeling better tomorrow, I'll get some food shopping done, since it's "laundry day', go visit Dad's to finish-up one of his lamp post projects, while the wash loads are being done. Enough for today.
A downpour on the skylights woke me at 7:30am on Sunday, but that didn't last very long, as most of the t-storms moved north and east of us. After OJ and coffee, I spent an inordinate amount of time with the news and weather sites – especially the news stories about the unfolding Toledo water disaster – mostly ignored by the MSM, so as not to cause panic over half-a-million people.
I had three loads of laundry to do, change bed linens, get the week's mail at the CHCA Community Mailbox, do a small painting project on Dad's lamp post crossbar with his house numbers, and put-off food shopping until tomorrow morning. Up at 8am on Monday morning, I was already running late. After OJ and coffee, I checked email, news and weather. With my small food shopping list, I left at 9:30 for the cleaners, Weis Market and Dad's house. After the first two stops, I applied another coat of paint to the lamp post numbers, dropped-off some prepared food and groceries and visited with Dad for a while, and was home by 11:45.
I got a 10-lb bag of California Sweet Nectarines and a 15-lb bag of Florida Navel Oranges; man-o-man, they are good snacking. I watched some History Channel CATV Shows, checked On the morning ride, I noticed that gas/diesel prices at the pump, had decreased yet another 4¢/gal, since just last Friday, August 1st: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now at $3.49/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) at $3.59/gal, Premium (93 oct) at $3.79/gal, and Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 is at $3.99/gal, at many stations in the York (PA) area. The Weather Channel forecast for the week, and bagged it around 11:30pm. Tomorrow's another day.
The lawnmower crews woke me at 7:45am on Tuesday; another start to a nice Summer day. With coffee, I had a nice large navel orange, and made Eggs Benedict Florentine w/ Hash Browns. Wednesday morning was a cloudy, foggy, 58°F start to the day. Up at 6:30am, I had coffee, some Del Monte® Cling Peaches, skipped breakfast since I wasn't feeling well, and checked the news and email. Showers were moving thru the area, and t-storms were forecast for later today. Damn, we need some serious rain, not just 'showers'. I left for Dad's at 9:15. I finished-up his lamp post/house numbers project, changed his computer's financial and health website passwords, visited for a while and was back home by 11:15.
I spent over an hour changing my own passwords on financial and health websites, due to these Russian criminal punks hacking billions of usernames and passwords.
After making a Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup for lunch, I tried listening to Rush, but couldn't. All he's talking about is "buttplugs", "trannys", "transvestites" etc, and other garbage, with deviant callers, for whole segments of his show. It makes me sick. To each his own, but I don't want that crap in my face. That's why I'm free to change the station. Instead of that trash, I downloaded some of the past 1-2 weeks' missed morning Chris Plante Show Podcasts, and went thru them until 6pm. I've given up on Limbaugh. I watched some "Fargo" and "The Last Ship" episode re-runs until 11:45pm, and called it a night.
Up at 7am on Thursday, it was only 57°F but sunny and warming-up quickly. After coffee, OJ and Eggs Benedict w/ Ham Steak & Homefries for breakfast, I decided to go out at 9:45am for a walk, while it was cool and humidity was low. Two and a half hours later, I was back, feeling great and decided to do some :house cleaning & a tune-up on my PC dekstop.

Outdoor temps had dropped to 62°F, with a clear sky, and no rain in sight. And it looks like that Barry 0bummer-boy's gotten us re-involved in the Iraq War. By 11:45pm, I was tired and had the attention span of a gnat, so I decided to bag it for the day, and get some sleep. I forgot to take the garbage bag out to the curb, so I'll get that in the morning before I leave around 9:30am. Good night, Irene.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and coming-up, I have a Financial Planning Meeting with Dad and Becky, at our personal/corporate CPA/CLP of many years, in Dallastown, need to get some bloodwork done at the nearby Wellspan Lab in East York (I hate needles), the cleaning ladies will be in, and I'll probably pick-up the usual 4 Rxs at Rite Aid in Stewartstown. As of today, there's one Rx waiting, but I'll wait until the others are ready to combine the 40-mile roundtrip. I might also get several bags of take-out Dim Sum (Chinese) dinners/snacks for us, if I go down there, as I did back in June. Mmmmmmmm, Dim Sum. My arm is still sore, but is gradually healing, and no further medical attention will be required. Who knows what else will come up?

Now, for the first time, Ebola has "officially" entered the United Sates via two health aid workers, that contracted the disease while working in Africa, where the Ebola outbreak continues.

Case fatality can be up to 90 percent – in other words, 90 out of every 100 people who catch Ebola die. The first patient landed in the United States on Saturday, August 2, 2014. Dr. Kent Brantly was then flown from Africa to the United States and then transported via ambulance to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. But behind a series of highly alarmed doors and long, cement, camera-laden hallways. It is the highly sophisticated, climate-controlled treasure room where the army keeps its most precious artifacts.
The facility was built for $24 million in 2010. The cavernous warehouse is typically shrouded in total darkness. Motion lights illuminate only the areas in which someone is walking.
