For decades, petty rules, silly laws, and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, and that life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second. A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the chnological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including body piercing, whole language, and "new math." But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus. In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of well intentioned but overbearing regulations. He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero-tolerance policies. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parent when a female student was pregnant or wanted an abortion. Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from the Boy Scouts to professional sports. Finally, when a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, and was awarded a huge settlement, Common Sense threw in the towel. As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments regarding questionable regulations such as those for low flow toilets, rocking chairs, and stepladders. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his life, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. I slept-in until 1pm on Sunday, and went out and did some food shopping, keeping in mind that a "Major Nor'Easter Blizzard" was forecast for Monday and Tuesday. I'd no more than digested last Friday's snowstorm with a modicum of plowing and shovelling, when another "Nor'Easter" — a convergence of two major storms from the Gulf of Mexico and Canada — began forming and threatened us with a major blizzard. I tracked it all weekend, and was up early Monday at 4am, feeding the cats, when I logged on and saw the radar maps. It was huge, covering about 9 states. I went down to the GC&N Complex, to feed Pickle, leave some additional dry food and water for him, in case I didn't get back down until some time on Tuesday. I also put out another 20lbs of birdseed, so the winged critters wouldn't go hungry. More global warming scam? On Tuesday, I plowed and shovelled for about 4 hours, and had the place back in ship-shape. (((sigh))) I'm getting too old for this crappola. My short take? It was less than advertised, here in The Mid-Atlantic Region. I spent most of the rest of this week going to various landscape meetings with customers, on their sites, revising numerous written estimates for work they want done, revising landscape and landscape maintenance project lists, to accomodate new arrivals. It looks like manpower is going to be a problems, this year, as we've gotten only two applications for employment, and neither of them are of teh caliber we've had for the past 2-3 years. The brutally-cold temps have been with us all week: daytime temps in the upper 20°Fs and nightime temps in the lower teens, with windchill in the single digits. Fortunately, the sun is melting both snow and ice during the day, despite the cold. Unfortunately, the amount of ground snow reflects the sun's rays, and is keeping temps down, instead of absorbing the warming rays, and allowing the ground to heat-up and dry-out. The roadcrews have done a super job in clearing snow and ice from the roads, over the past week, with the three snowstorms we've had. I sure am ready for Spring. You? The 2005 Mid-Atlantic Garden Show — formerly The York Flower Show — is in full-tilt mode, this week and weekend. We participated in it for 8 years, garnering 6 First Place and 2 Best of Show plaques and ribbons. I pulled out in '03, when The President's Day Blizzard collapsed 3 of our 7 greenhouses. Several people have told me that the show's since degenerated into a "yard sale" event, with everything from pots and pans, to clothing and vaious assorted junk, being sold.
