Mickey Fearn, the National Park Service Deputy Director for Communications and Community Assistance, made headlines when he claimed that black people don't visit national parks because they associate them with slaves being lynched by their masters.

Yellowstone, the first national park, was created in 1872 in Wyoming. Slavery was over by then and no one had ever been lynching slaves around Old Faithful anyway. But false claims of racism die very hard.
Now Alcee Hastings, an impeached judge, and a coalition of minority groups is demanding increased “inclusiveness” at national parks. High on their list is the claim that, “African-Americans have felt unwelcome and even fearful in federal parklands during our nation's history because of the horrors of lynching.” What do national parks have to do with lynchings? Many national parks have trees. People were hung from trees. It's racial guilt by arboreal association. Trees are racist down to their roots.
The origin of the bizarre racist lynching theory of national parks appears to be Carolyn Finney. Finney was an actress noted for, apparently, little more than an appearance in The Nutt House. Then she became a cause célèbre for race activists when she was denied tenure by Berkeley's Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management because her work didn't meet academic standards.
Her supporters blamed racism, rather than her academic shortcomings, and protested vocally.
These days she's a diversity advisor to the U.S. National Parks Advisory Board. What wasn't good enough for UC Berkeley is good enough for national parks. She is also the author of Black Faces, White Spaces. In it she claims that “oppression and violence against black people in forests and other green spaces can translate into contemporary understandings that constrain African-American environmental understandings.”
Finney cites the work of Joy DeGruy Leary who invented a Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome that she claims black people suffer from. Affected by PTSS, black people experience “fear and mistrust of forests and other green spaces.” According to Finney, the tree is a racist symbol to black people.
“Black people also wanted to go out in the woods and eat apples from the trees,” Finney explains.” But black people were lynched on the trees. The tree became a big symbol.” Black people are triggered by trees and suffer Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome flashbacks. You can't expect them to go to on a hike.
What shall we do about the racist trees? Finney is front and center at the new “inclusion” initiative, “You're sitting here making up a rule and assuming that everybody is going to feel comfortable to come to the woods and go on a hike,” she whined. “Maybe they're not interested in doing that, that's not how they like to come to the woods.”
In addition to complaining about the racist trees, the inclusion initiative also claimed that national parks alienate Latinos because of the “color of the uniforms that rangers wear.”
What's wrong with the color of park ranger uniforms? According to the Hispanic Access Foundation, they look too much like the border patrol. Even though the uniforms are actually completely different. But much like the lack of lynchings at Yellowstone National Park, the truth doesn't matter here.
None of this is really about the nonsensical pseudoscientific ravings you just read. National parks don't care what race you are. Trees are as blind to color as they are to everything else. Forests don't need to be made more inclusive. This campaign is led by people who hate and reject natural spaces.
Finney claims that Theodore Roosevelt's vision of preserving beautiful natural landscapes was rooted in “privilege”. Or as Fearn put it, “Preserving wild places is a white concept, going back to Rome.”
Influential figures in the National Park Service reject the fundamental idea of preserving natural beauty. They view a forest as a “white concept” full of scary racist trees. Or at least that's what they claim.
That is what this is really about. The Obama era has rotted the Federal government with radical figures who are at war with fundamental American concepts and values. They intend to use their power to destroy those concepts and values. This is another example of that same ugly phenomenon.
Alcee Hastings complains of a “green ceiling” for hiring minorities. Aside from the usual diversity hiring push and buying from minority businesses in the “inclusiveness” proposals, not to mention nonsense about racist trees and scary uniforms, is a move to divert the focus to urban development. Then there's the flow of money to “community organizations” to engage “culturally diverse communities”.
All that is code for robbing parks and moving the money into the same network of corrupt organizations that already swallows all the money that the Federal government can throw at its local projects. This isn't inclusiveness. It's blackmail. Advertise in our publications. Give us grants. Or your trees are racist.
For all the safe space rhetoric, the arguments ultimately come down to money. It's not about racist tree symbolism or uniform colors. It's about creating positions for people like Carolyn Finney or Mickey Fearn so they can lecture us on how parks are privilege and nature is racist. It's about finding yet another unlikely target for baseless claims of racism to be milked for money, grants, ads and contracts.
The Obama era has seen the “Sharptoning of America as the same ugly shakedown scams that were being practiced in New York or Chicago were suddenly national policy. This is the Sharptoning of the National Park Service. It's happening in every agency and arm of government. We just don't notice it.
The accusations are absurd. And yet the payoffs keep coming. And there's little doubt that this latest “inclusiveness” initiative will also pay off. Our parks will suffer. Our slimiest politicians will prosper.
Finney says that national parks should represent where we want to go collectively as a people. But the beauty of a walk through the woods is that you don't have to “collectively” go anywhere. A hike is not a national mission. It's a place for individuality. And the left never fails to remind us how it loathes the individual and worships the collective impulse of totalitarian movements. This is paired with a hatred for beauty.
Forests and lakes are not about where we want to go collectively. They are where we once were. They represent spaces of imagination and reflection that have nothing in common with Finney's compulsion. They don't have to represent Finney's demands for “demographic and ethnic diversity”. They allow us a freedom from the confining urban spaces of leftist identity politics that deny our humanity. They show us that life is pure and simple in ways that defy the convoluted nonsense of political correctness.
It's not hard to see why the left, despite its hollow environmental posturing, hates them.

A Day In The Life
The garbage trucks' engines woke me at 7:30 on Friday morning, to another rainy, cool 51°F morning. I made fresh-squeezed Sweet Clementine Juice, French Dark-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee, and Poached Eggs w/ Toast In a Bowl. As I checked the weather and news sites, the forecast was for more rain until Sunday. The deep coughing had returned, but all the phlegm was still 'clear'. I streamed the live Chris Plante Show 9-12 ET on WMAL/DC, while working on the Condo's 3rd & 4th Qtrs Budgets, then went out to run a few errands. I kept hitting t-storm cells, where the rainfall was so intense, many other vehicles were pulling over to allow it to pass thru. In fact, we had a Nor'easter sitting almost on top of us, and it would stay there most of the day.
Back home by 2pm, I made 1-lb of Steamed & Seasoned Shrimp, with plenty left over for tomorrow, started watching a History Channel series, called Ancient Aliens, and went thru Seasons 1-11, with new episodes coming on at 9 and 10pm. Where did the afternoon and evening go? The series was well-researched, seriously-documented and slickly-produced, and at some points, laughable in its attempts to legitimize "exterrestials" and other extra-dimensional phenomena. But hey, it's a TV show. I can't believe that I stayed with it until 12-midnight. Time for sleep.

Up at 8:30 on Saturday, to another rainy, cold 49°F, that I fired-up the furnace, got the juice and coffee moving quickly, and had an English Muffin w/ Peach Marmalade. There's nothing worth a crap on radio on the weekends, locally, so I played some of the week's missed Chris Plante Show podcasts 4/2-3-4, until the phone rang. My realtors had an early afternoon showing today at the Old GC&N Complex and, if I was needed, could I be there? Sure. After a plate of cold shrimp for lunch, I met them at 2pm, answered questions for what appeared to be people interested in a series of residential building lots, which they full well know the 20ac is NOT zoned for. On the way home, I was disappointed again with the realty company's lousy efforts at screening buyers.
Later in the afternoon, Dad stopped by for a visit, I worked on some paperwork and bills, and caught the evening news. NatGeoTV had numerous episodes of The Story of God on, and I watched until 1am. Lights out.
Sleeping-in until 9 on Sunday morning, I finally got up to a cool, but sunny and dry morning. My 10" rain gauge had 6¼" in it, for the past 5 days. OJ, coffee, Smoked Salmon & Avocado Rye Toasts, and I checked the weather and news. Email was still flawless. I initiated MalwareBytes Free Version to scan my computer HD and external drive, and it found 11 "foreign objects", which I promptly quarratined and later deleted. I did a full system back-up with MS-BackUp, after the malware was deleted. I played some of the week's missed Chris Plante Show podcasts 4/5-6, started laundry loads, and went out for a walk around the area. Nice day, and I wasn't coughing a lung up, yet.
I ran into some "snowbird" neighbors, who'd just returned from Florida and were walking their dogs; and others like to just trying to get some fresh air and exercise, and lose some weight, after recovering from health problems. It was Mother's Day, and the Complex was empty as I'd imagine most neighbors were taking their Moms out to dinner. I liked to chef a 3 or 4-course meal for Mom & Dad, on this day. Dad, Becky & I miss her terribly, after 4 years almost to the day. Happy Mother's Day, Mom.
When I got back, I had two calls from my 2 investment project buddies, following-up on my health and wanting to know when we could get back together to get some business projects underway. I'll call them tomorrow. After the evening news, where I learned that America's poor has a "diaper gap", I found that History Channel was running early episodes of American Pickers, Full Episodes, Season 4, and I watched until I nodded-off at 12-midnight. Lights out.
Up at 8am on Monday, I fired-up the heat, made Sweet Clementine Juice, coffee and Eggs Benedict w/ Ham Steak & Homefries. Mmmmmmmm. It was a sunny, 55°F, breezy morning and would hit 71° in the afternoon. I streamed the live Chris Plante Show 9-12 ET on WMAL/DC, checked email, weather and news sites. I had pain in my left hip, but after some Bayer® 325mg Aspirin, the pain subsided. I had a small pile of mail to finish sorting/shit canning, so when Rush came on at 12noon I went out for a short walk. More "snowbird" neighbors arriving from Florida.
The heat off, the condo windows were open all morning and afternoon, to let the sweet, cool Spring air in, before the nasty humid and hot Summer/Fall weather arrives, in a few weeks. I had some errands to run, so after an Olive Loaf Sandwich and a bowl of Lentil & Vegetable Soup, I got those done, called Dad to see how he was doing or if he needed anything while I was out and about, and got home by 4:30pm. After the 6:60 evening news, I saw that History Channel was running early episodes of American Pickers, Full Episodes, Season 5, and that afterward, Fat 'N Furious had a new episode on, until 11pm, closed down, armed the place and called it quits for the day.
The lawn mower crews woke me at 6:30 on Tuesday, a showery 47°F, with rain on the way. I checked the news, weather and politics while making Sweet Clementine Juice, steeping the coffee and making Grits & Eggs in a Bowl. I streamed the live Chris Plante Show 9-12 ET on WMAL/DC, checked email, and wrote out a few checks for both the condo and gdnctr utilities. I left to get the weekend's mail, run some errands and stop by the East York Wellspan Lab, to get some bloodwork done, if they weren't too busy. They were packed, so I'll try another time.
Back home by 2:30pm, I grilled a Pepper-Crusted 10oz Filet Mignon w/ Bernaise Sauce, Sautéed Onions & Roasted Potatoes, worked on paperwork and bills while Rush was on. While doing some condo chores, I clicked over to History's Counting Cars Marathon, as back ground noise, and after finishing the bathrooms and tile floors, I watched the "Counting Cars" marathon until it got hokey, switched over to Car Hunters for the new episodes, and then to Deadliest Catch until 1am. End of the line for me.
I slept-in until 8:30am on Wednesday, another cloudy, milder 53° morning; just sprinkles, but with no rain like we've had over the past 8-10 days. The t-storms were moving to the south and east. I cranked-up the heat for a short while, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, and dbl-strong coffee in the Chemex® Drip System, which I've used for 37yrs. None better, anywhere. I streamed the live Chris Plante Show 9-12 ET on WMAL/DC, for an hour, and left for Dad's to help him with some projects.
I replaced lightbulbs in difficult places, set-up the main electronic timer for his drip irrigation system, did some computer maintenance set-up work on his new lapper, which is working flawlessly, and visited for a while. By 11:15, all was well, and I left to get some errands done, and got another call from my 2 investment buddies. We're meeting Friday to explore some interesting opportunities on various firearm/motorcycle/automobile collections which will soon be ready for sale.
I made a Grilled Allen Bros 10oz Dbl Cheeseburger w/ Seasoned Potato Wedge Fries, for lunch, and listened to Rush for a while, while I scanned news and weather sites. I had to go out to Staples to get some office supplies, and afterward, got distracted by wandering thru Best Buy, across the York Town Mall. My "Check Engine" light had gone off, so that was not a worry anymore; I'd checked fluids, hose and cap connections, topped-off reservoirs, and somehow it liked that. With 470,065 miles, the pristine but ancient 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo is doing fine. Thankyouverymuch.
By 5pm, the American Pickers Marathon was on, and I watched until 10pm, then caught some new episodes of Triple D until 12:30am. Lights out.
Up at 7am on Thursday, it looked like a nice day ahead. With OJ and coffee, I checked the weather and news sites, and sure was glad to see that this screwed-up country had the homo-queer-confused-tranny bathroom issue all figured out, for at least the high schools. They even had idiotic signs made-up in Braille, for those sightless, tactile queers. Since there are probably less than one-half-of-one-percent of the subhumans in America, we'll only be spending a few billion to make the deviants/perverts comfortable wagging their weenies in front of naked 14yr old high school girls, in the showers, too. How nice. My "solution" is brutal, fast, deadly and bloody: kill them all. So much for my "political finesse".
I had a serious Stack of French Toast, streamed the usual live Chris Plante Show 9-12 ET on WMAL/DC, and left at 2pm for a meeting at the realtor's nearby offices. My "secret buyer" for the 20ac GC&N Complex, somehow was leaked by the people who approached me: The North Hopewell Township. I gave the realtor permission to get started with the NH-TWP; now I'll have to pay the 6% commission I was trying to avoid, by keeping it all quiet until after the realty contract expired in September. It boggled my mind that they couldn't keep it a secret, but all the details aren't out, yet. If you want to know them confidentially, email me, and I'll fill you in. Otherwise, it'll be late Fall or early Spring until the full public details come out and the deal is done.
Back home by 5pm, I got the mail, wrote out 2 more utility checks for the Old GC&N Complex, caught the evening news, and went out for a walk around the condo complex. By 7, a new show I'd never seen before, Down East Dickering, was on and I watched until 11pm, closed down, armed the place and went upstairs.
Tomorrow, Friday, starts a new week here in the "Journal", and I've got 2 Dr app'ts in York midweek, and a late week meeting with my investment friends, in Lancaster. There's also a 'showing' of the Old GC&N Complex on Monday, so the week's pretty well filling-up. My short-term memory's improving from stopping all those Rx & OTC drugs, but it's not 100% yet, and I feel like there are a few "missing pieces"; I just can't remember *what*.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

The Middle East is rapidly-collapsing under the subhuman, murderous muslim/islamic riots (muslim Brotherhood) and rule ("arab Spring"), with world crude oil prices projected to hit $200+/bbl, or even higher into the $300-$400 range,

"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
