as I get older, the two seasons which I enjoy the most, are Spring and Fall. Summer's just too hot and humid — no, I don't go swimming in municipal or private pools — and Winter's just too cold — I've never been a skier, and I hate compound fractures — IMO. Rather, for the Fall, I like t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, barn coats — dressing in 'layers' — Fedoras, warm socks, heavy jeans, fireplace fires, hot coffee and cocoa, the smell of leaves burning, frost-on-the-windshield, scarves, mufflers, and seeing the corn and bean fields finally picked clean, and the grain elevators fully-stocked. Truckloads of hay and straw are continuing to be moved to barns for Winter storage and livestock feeding. Just the sight of those massive JD and IH Combines lumbering down the state roads, is awesome in and of itself. I've already laid-in a nice supply of wild birdseed, and have begun feeding the birds, just outside of my office window, under the western lath house. Five(!) comical chipmunks have now joined the feeding frenzy, and have consumer almost as much seed as the various birds have. They live behind the stone walls, presumably in dens, and it'll be interesting to see if they hiberate or forage, during the Winter months. This'll be their first year here en masse, outside my office window viewing area. LOL! I'm going to enjoy this Winter's "little animal antics", BTW. I'm shopping around for large, mature, (Winter) Buttrernut Squash, to roast more for my upcoming 4-5-6-7-course dinners. Or, just for "future usage". Mmmmmmmmm, yes. Butternut Squash Bisque, 'crusty' Italian Bread, a simple (no spinach) salad and an adult beverage, on a cold Winter's day. Life is good, on those certain days, IMO.

Nighttime temps have dropped into the upper 20s/lower 30s, while daytime temps are now in the upper 40s/lower 50s, and heavy frost is an almost daily occurrence. My GC&N Staff and Sister, Becky, are working hard to get all the containerized nursery stock cleaned-up, cut back and put away into the 7 massive greenhouses, for Winter storage. On Saturday, I stopped into the local fire company's end-of-year BBQ, in Stewartstown, PA. Eureka Fire Company #54 had a pit beef, ham and turkey BBQ on Saturday, as a fund-raiser, and I habitually stop by every-singleone which I find, anywhere, to get some of the best BBQ sandwiches, and help the local volunteer fire-police companies raise money for their operating budgets. Man-o-man, was that a good lunch! I bought 4 sandwiches — 2 pit beef and 2 ham — $20, for me, Dad and Becky, for lunch. I look forward to all their BBQs, during the non-Winter months. Mmmmmm, yes! Their BBQ is good eating.
We're getting caught-up on all the simple, retail (walk-in, over-the-counter purchased) tree installations, as well as the many medium and high-end landscape jobs, and it's appearing that we'll set some very nice financial, best-year-ever records, in the process. A few months ago, I lamented the loss of my two most experienced landscape crew chiefs, which set us back financially in a huge way, at that time. Since, my foreman and his crews have done *yeoman's work*, in making-up the "lost jobs", and we're actually now ahead of all previous years, according to the end-of-October audit results. I'm stunned, most appreciative and working on a "bonus" for all involved. Wow, what a rollercoaster year it's been!
Season 5's DVD of "24" is due out very soon — December 5th, I'm told — and I've pre-ordered it. I'm anxiously awaiting Season 6, which is supposed to premiere in January, IIRC. "24" is one of the very, very, very few TV shows I watch, along with selected shows on The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, continuous live feeds on The Weather Channel, FOX News, slected shows on FX, TNT and Food TV; occasionally. Mostly, what's on both CATV and TV these days, is complete garbage, *geared to the lowest viewer mentality*: that akin to a rotting rutabaga, IMO. Yuk.
Back in may 2003, I wrote about "My Keyboard's Furball", in a Journal entry. Last Saturday night, with a 2-year old wireless COMPAQ keyboard, I used a very thin paring knife, wet it, and ran it through all the tracks and buttons on the new keyboard. YIKES! There was more cat fur in those grooves, than I have on my total body! I filled-up two ashtrays worth of wads of cat fur! I was pulling it out in long strands and wads. Double yikes! I've never seen anything like that; I was grossed-out, stunned and needed another *adult beverage*; make it a double, barkeep. Well, that's done for the next 1-2 years.
I've decided to put the GC&N onto Winter Hours — [Mon-Fri, 10-3; Closed Sat-Sun] — beginning Monday, November 20th, and begin the slow-slide into Winter. Although we'll be closed for retail on both Saturday and Sunday, the landscapers will continue their regular hours, during the week, as per the scheduled and pending jobs. The GC&N Staff — my horticulturalist, lscp designer, greenhouse manager, handyman — will work as long as the weather holds-out, as will the landscape crews, and their crew chiefs. My lscp foreman will name his own hours and crew, to also continue working on 'special projects', as long as the weather holds-out and conditions don't turn too miserable. Right now, we're enjoying a nice "Indian Summer".
Since moving my corporate website from the Chicago "server farm" (www.rcn.com) to the local ISP (www.mtwirefree.net), the amount of spam, junk and crap emails has increased exponentially, for both Dad and me. I'm getting well over 2,500 a day, and my Netscape v7.2 email client routes 90% of it into the junk or trash bins, but I have to get the email filters activated on the new hosting server. Going through and scanning the junk and trash bins for a 'slipped-through' friend's or business email, is a pain in the butt and a huge waste of my time. Okay, filters are installed and set-up, and working beautifully: spam and junk are now reduced by 99%. Life is good!
Locally, gas prices at the pump, have dropped yet another 2¢ this past week, here in the York (PA) area. Unleaded Regular is now at $2.09/gal. Unleaded Plus is now at $2.19/gal and Unleaded Premium is now at $2.39/gal. Both diesel and kerosene are still hovering around $2.49/gal. Home heating oil is slowly replacing gasoline, for the coming Winter months, and the glut of crude on the market, is quickly disappearing, as production catches-up with supplies. The lowered prices, IMO, will begin to rise in the coming weeks after the Mid-Term Elections, as the market "regulates itself", due to production of Winter home heating oil and gas.
I took cloudy Tuesday, Election Day, off, and slept-in until 11:30am. Made poached eggs, fresh Hollandaise sauce, minced chives garni and coffee, took a shower and went out to vote at my regular polling place: the local firehouse on North Sherman St, in York (PA). Umbrella in-hand, I walked in, registered (sign-in), and showed them my new York County (PA) "Independent Conservative Voter ID", and was truly-miffed when they (once again) said they "didn't need any ID". I asked the 5 men and women at the sign-in table, "why don't you require a valid ID, for each voter?" None had an acceptable answer, other than "Harrisburg says we don't need to ask for any ID". (((SIGH))) I was voter #700, at 12:30pm, indicating a very heavy voter turnout, so far. The whole process, with the new voting machines, took less than 15secs, and I got my "I Voted" sticker on my jacket, which I've saved and posted on my office bulletinboard, by specific election, for the past 16 years, here in PA.
I had Mom, Dad & Becky over for a simple, 4-course dinner, on Wednesday evening, and it was awesome, if I may blow my own horn. The simple leak in my CharBroil Grille's LPG tank mysteriously "fixed itself", so I broiled the 12oz, bone-in, *USDA Prime* Filet Mignon to absolute perfection. The rest of the dinner, I prepared on my 4-burner, gas stove and oven, in the condo. Murphy and Mama Kitty, my two condo cats, were very sociable and thankful for the filet mignon platter. Once again, it was a delicious bill o' fare, by yours truly. Becky left for SF, yesterday. I'll see her again, in the Spring, for The 17th Open House.

As I headed to my regular polling location, after sleeping-in until 11:30am, I noticed full parking lots in 5 other polling locations — fire halls, schools, churches, VFWs etc — and felt pretty good that people were taking the time to vote, in what usually amounts to around 20% of less turnout, for most mid-terms. In 16 years of voting here in York County (PA), no one has ever asked me for an ID of any kind, although I always show the County Voter ID and my PA Driver's License. They do compare signatures, though, from the last election and I guess I can be thankful, at least, for that. But voter fraud could be — and is in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh — even more rampant and flagrant, if they didn't at least do that. I was voter #700 at the North Sherman St voting location, in York. In an off-year, mid-term election, at 12:30pm, that's a very heavy turnout, IIRC from past year numbers.
The new voting machines are simply simple and amazingly quick; I was finished in under 15secs.
