Jonathan Gruber, the MIT professor currently getting a dose of media scrutiny generally reserved for conservatives, said something you can hear daily in Washington, D.C. From bars in and around Capitol Hill to cocktail parties in Georgetown, the elites roaming the halls of power think you, the American people, are stupid.
This belief is not unique to Democrats; it's truly a bipartisan idea. In fact, the very concept of modern government in the United States is based on it.
Since the start of the progressive movement, self-appointed intellectuals, academics, the wealthy and politicians have based their actions on the conviction that they know what is best for others; their lessors, the unwashed masses. Since the turn of the 20th century, this belief has crept into governments on all levels, incrementally nudging our liberties to the side and replacing it with their coerced will.
With few exceptions, government has grown regardless of which political party held power. Faster under Democrats, on average, but growing nonetheless. As government grows, liberty shrinks.
Concepts unfathomable to our Founding Fathers, or even 100 or 50 years ago, are now accepted norms in American life. Leaps and bounds such as Obamacare we notice; the inching and chipping away we don't. But the journey is only window dressing, the destination is what matters. And we arrived a long time ago.
We didn't get to 50 million people on food stamps and 100 million people on some form of government assistance overnight; we were led there by these very progressives under the guise of caring and compassion.
Benjamin Franklin famously said, “Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” We didn't go the wholesale route, we went piecemeal.
Masterfully, progressives rarely went for the long bomb. They were content to pound away at the ground game. Always under the pretence of compassion, they moved to “help” the poor and the elderly, because what kind of monster would oppose helping the poor or elderly? Some did, and they were painted as monsters. Meanwhile, the real monsters marched on.
When Gruber talked about the lack of transparency being a major ally in the fight to pass Obamacare, he was wrong. It wasn't a lack of transparency. There were conservatives across the country saying exactly what the law was going to do. It was his and other advocates’ willingness to lie for the cause. And it was the media's enthusiasm to swallow the truth and sell the lie to the people who trusted the media to tell them the truth that ensured its passage.
There were tens of thousands of Americans who took to Capitol Hill to have their objections to that monstrosity heard, but progressives were not going to deviate from their plan. For generations, they'd had their eyes on this prize – control over one-sixth of the U.S. economy – and they weren't going to let anyone stand in their way.
Like I said, they don't often go for the bomb, but when its there for them they will take a shot. They'd been chipping away at the edges by expanding Medicaid further and further up the income scale, biding their time. The Hail Mary had been intercepted in 1993 with Hillarycare, but they completed the pass with Obamacare.
And while hundreds of thousands of Americans took to the National Mall, and millions more contacted their members of Congress to voice their opposition, tens of millions more didn't. The government was moving to take de facto control over the most important commodity in their lives, and they sat silent.
In spite of the media's best efforts, the truth was out there. The only way to avoid exposure to the truth was through willful blindness, and many Americans were willfully blind.
To remain ignorant in the face of available information, to ignore reality because you've got other things you'd rather do, is to choose to be consciously unaware. When it comes to government attacking liberty, to be consciously unaware is to willingly make yourself stupid.
So, in that sense, Jonathan Gruber was absolutely correct. Obamacare could not have passed were it not for the stupidity of the American voter. But progressives didn't have to be so coy about their desires. Had they been open, it wouldn't have made a difference to most people. You either understand the concept of liberty and care about it or you don't. This past election showed many more people have awakened to it, and the giant that is the American people is paying attention…for now.
But just like the 1994 election after Hillarycare, the American public is less a sleeping giant than a narcoleptic one. Thomas Jefferson knew “the price of liberty is eternal vigilance”, but too many of us aren't interested in vigilance. When presented with the opportunity to get something for themselves at the expense of someone else, they take it.
To those people, were they to overhear members of Congress, their staffs or the DC professional cocktail party set say the American people are ignorant, they would nod in agreement. Then they'd hope they remembered to set their DVR to record The Real Housewives Of Kardashianville and forget all about it.

A Day In The Life
Friday's cold 19°F wasn't nearly as bad as the past couple of days, but still required the furnace for a while. I was up at 7:30am, after some seriously good 9hrs of sleep. OJ and coffee was called for, but I'd forgotten to take the garbage bag out to the curb last night, and the early garbage trucks passed me by. Bagged and sealed-up, it can wait until the next pick-up at Dad's on Wednesday. I got ready and left for the 20 mile drive down to Stewartstown, to get some waiting Rxs at the Rite Aid store. Traffic was unusually heavy on I-83 South/ Rt-24 North for a weekday mid-morning, but I made good time, down and back. I'd guess people are getting an early start on the Thanksgiving Day Holiday. Dad called on the way home, and I'd be over to visit him and Becky, tomorrow. Back home by 11:45am, I unpacked and put away the various groceries. The Chris Plante Show, 9-12 WMAL-DC, was just over, and his 3-hr podcasts from Thursday and today were not posted on WMAL's
I made a Turkey Club w/ Fries, Pasta w/ Peas & Cheese and crusty bread, for lunch. Rush went from 12-3, Savage from 3-5 and I went out for a short walk until it got dark at 5:30pm. There was a boatload of email to go thru and answer to empty-out the queue, and the Mark Levin Show was on from 6-9, as I went thru the mail. Temps had already dropped to 17°, and the condo warmed-up nicely. While doing some research, I listened to the always fascinating and erudite, WMAL-streaming John Batchelor Show, until 12:30am. Time for sleep. Computer shut-down, condo armed, I hit the sack.
Saturday morning at 6:15 was another temperature record-setter for this time of year: 12°F. Heat was called for, and so was the heavy robe. It's now getting first light at 6:45am, as we plod onward to the Winter Solstice, in late December. I made OJ and coffee, downloaded email and checked the weather and news. Having a craving for Grated Potato Pancakes (Latkes), I made some and topped them with butter and creme fraiche. Wow, the forecast (10pm) is for 1-3" of snow on Wednesday. Woo-hoo! My left hip was achingaching, so I took some Bayer® 325mg Aspirin, and worked around the condo, mopping the kitchen and 2 bathroom floors, until 12noon. I made a Turkey Breast & Bacon BLT w/ chips, and a Schweppe's Ginger Ale. High for the day was 42°F, until the
Sleeping-in until 7:30am on Sunday, 36°F, I felt a little groggy until I got the OJ and coffee made. Both helped. While scanning email, the news and weather, I noticed that the forecast (8am) is now for 2-4" of snow on Wednesday. I decided to skip eggs, sausage gravy & biscuits for breakfast, and save my appetite for lunch. Awww, Penn State lost to Illinois at an away game, 16-14. Whoops, they've just upped the forecast (10:30am) to 3-6" of snow on Wednesday, with almost 70°F predicted for tomorrow. Big storms "gathering" in the Southeast and Plains. I started the laundry loads around 10:30, while doing some more paperwork. I'd lost track of the hour, and at 1;30pm, remembered that I hadn't had eaten, so I made a Allen Bros Prime Ribeye, Blue Cheese & Onions, and a Mediterranean Pasta Salad for lunch. Finally finishing-up laundry at 3:45, I went out for a short walk to get some kinks out of my hip and it worked, as did a few more aspirin. I did some maintenance on the computer, using MalwareBytes (Free) and a full system, plus 2 external drives, back-up. While they ran, every app was closed, so I took a 45 min snooze on the LR couch. The rain arrived and temps dropped quickly to 50°, though it'd be near 70° tomorrow; one last Summer-Fall gasp. By 8pm, I was
Up at 6:30am on Monday, it was a tropical 63°F – quite an amazing temp swing compared to the 12° and 13° we had just a few days ago – but still some furnace heat was needed. After OJ, and while coffee was steeping, I scanned the weather, and now we're in for 6-10" of snow on Wednesday. This is getting serious. The massive t-storm of yesterday/last night had all but disappeared into the Northeast or ocean, and from the maps alone, I couldn't see the next storm's formation point. It could suck to be traveling on Wednesday and possibly Thursday. 71°F right now! If it's real bad, we might just postpone our Turkey Day Dinner until Friday or Saturday. After raking more oak tree leaves off the front porch and walk, I left at 9am to get stuff done.
First, get the week's mail, pick-up shirts at the cleaners, get some groceries at Weis Market, help Becky by lubing her dbl-garage overhead door, like I did with Dad's two double garages' doors, a few weeks ago. (Did mine a few weeks ago.) Then, go to Dad's and rake leaves from front foundation gardens, cut back grasses and perennials. Rake debris on to lawn area, use his big John Deere's mulching function to grind-up and disperse over lawn area, for breakdown and composting over Winter. After a couple more yard projects, I left at 12:15pm to get my groceries in the Jeep into my 'fridge and freezer. 73°F by
I slept-in until 7:30am on Tuesday, woke to another warm 50°F morning, and turned-up the heat anyway. After fresh OJ, I started the coffee, remembered last night's rioting reports on TV, fired-up the computer and opened the CATV window to get some updated news reports. It was much worse than I thought it'd be. We should have picked our own cotton, dammit. Note to self: it's the Jews' fault; the leftist-libtard idiot rioter/looter said so. Okay, enough.
I mentally-reviewed Thursday's Thanksgiving Dinner Menu – Stuffed Turkey Breast, and Lobster Bisque w/ Truffles, and Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy, and Baby Peas, and Sweet Corn, and Cranberry Relish,
Back by 12noon, I swept more of the accursed oak leaves out of my garage, parked the Jeep, and had an Olive Loaf Sandwich. I tuned into Rush for a while, alternating between weather reports: first it was 1-3", then it was 4-6", next it was 6-8", and then it was 10-12"; now they're backing down after creating Gas and diesel prices at the pump, have dropped another 3¢, since last Friday, November 21st: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now $2.92/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is $3.02/gal, Premium (92 oct) is $3.22/gal, with Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 dropping to $3.52/gal. hysteria and people are rushing to convenience stores and supermarkets buying "essentials" – bread, milk, eggs and TP – emptying the shelves, and we're back to 6-8" and ten minutes later it's 4-6". The bloviating weather idiots are watching 5-6 different computer modeling programs, none of them are very good at prediction of mere diddly-squat. (Except this one; thanks, Tom.) After all the years at my business, plowing the 20ac and dealing with multiple blizzards and ice storms, I just take it all with a grain of salt, and deal with whatever comes down the road; far too many don't. That said, there's still a ***WINTER STORM WARNING*** for the region, and probably a 2-4" dusting. First snowfall of the season, though, and I'm always excited!
I listened to the missed Chris Plante Show Podcasts from last Thursday and Friday, skipped the Mark Levin Show at 6pm, watched Economic Collapse a Mathematical Certainty: "Top 5 Places Where Not To Be" (13:08), and "The First 12 Hours of a US Dollar Collapse" (7:07), and "The Dollar Collapse And WW3 HAS BEGUN!" (13:28), and finally "World War 3 Is Upon Us!" (43:37). If that doesn't happen, this one will: "Yellowstone Eruption" (45:00). This movie was interesting: "Gog and Magog: The Complete Movie" (57:20). Weird dreams tonite, maybe. By 11pm, I was ready to call it quits, checked the weather for the Nor'Easter's progress, armed the condo and wound-up staying-up another hour, listening to the John Batchelor Show, until 12:45am; then up to sleep.
The pounding rain/sleet on the condo's 4 skylights woke me at 7:30 on Wednesday morning; no snow yet. Temps had dropped to 39°F outside, and the weather maps made it look like we'd get all rain, since the snow and cold was still far west of us. Suits me. After OJ and coffee, I fired-up the furnace to take the chill off the place, and settled-in to look at some more maps and forecasts. I made some Soft-Boiled Eggs w/ Toast in a bowl, and spent some time reading about last night's riots in Fergadishu. Meh. By 9am, the rain had turned to *very large snowflakes*, and it was coming down hard. 4-8" forecast. Beautiful! By 11am, temps had dropped to 33°, and the flakes were smaller, but coming down just as hard. I fired-up the Jeep and took a drive around the area, needing nothing and going nowhere in particular, to just enjoy the falling snow. By 5pm, the snow was tapering-off, and although I'd shoveled the front walk and driveway once, you could hardly tell it'd been done. I'll get it cleared again before Dad and Becky arrive at 12:30pm tomorrow, for T-Day Dinner.
Finally, around 5:45pm, it stopped snowing. Looks like 3-4" out there, and it'll freeze tonite, even with temps at 33-34°F. I listened to Rush from 12-3pm, played the morning's missed Chris Plante Show WMAL (DC) Podcast until 6pm, set the dining room table for tomorrow's dinner, staged the plates,
La-la-land didn't last very long. I was awakened by some weird dreams at 3:30am on Thursday, and decided to stay-up, get coffee, an early shave and shower, and get things ready for Thanksgiving Dinner at 12:30pm. I had to go out for some Marlboro®s, but was back in time to get all the elements into play, and timed near-perfectly. Once again, I mentally-reviewed and assembled today's Thanksgiving Dinner Menu – Stuffed Turkey Breast, and Lobster Bisque w/ Truffles, and Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy, and Baby Peas, and Sweet Corn, and Cranberry Relish, and Gelato Ice Cream with a Blackberry Sauce. Dad and Becky arrived, we gave Dad his Thanksgiving new Orvis® sweater present, exchanged cards, feasted until we couldn't eat anymore, and Becky containerized the leftovers for herself and Dad. I had a lot of clean-up to do with 3 dishwasher loads to run thru. Damn, that turkey, rich in tryptophan, makes me groggy. So did getting up too damned early.
After affixing the traditional Holiday Red Bow on the Jeep's front grill, I caught part of the Eagles beating the Cowboys 33-10, the Lions beat the Bears 34-17, and Seattle was beating the 49ers 16-0, when I started nodding-off at 10:30, so I decided to pack-it-in early, at 11pm. No, I don't do "Black Friday" shopping; I have other things to get done but will have to fight traffic tomorrow and for several more weeks until after Christmas. Sucks to be me unless I use the back roads and sidestreets.
Friday starts a new week here in the "Journal", and with some upcoming medical appointments for oral surgery for Dad, it could get busy. I'll have to make another run to Stewartstown's Rite Aid to p/u some waiting Rxs. Heck, I start using my new Geisinger Preferred PPO Advantage Plan in Medicare Part C, next week, as I turn 65. Where'd all the time go?

Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia are going through the worst Ebola outbreak in history and health officials believe that it has killed more than 700 people there. Now, for the first time, Ebola has "officially" entered the United Sates via two health aid workers, that contracted the disease while working in Africa, where the Ebola outbreak continues.
Ebola virus disease (EVD), originally known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a severe, and often times (70-90%) fatal disease in humans. Case fatality can be up to 90 percent – in other words, 90 out of every 100 people who catch Ebola die. EVD outbreaks typically occur in remote villages in Central and West Africa and are transmitted via wild animals (such as fruit bats) to humans.
The first patient landed in the United States on Saturday, August 2, 2014. Dr. Kent Brantly was then flown from Africa to the United States and then transported via ambulance to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. The second person, Nancy Whitebol, will return to the U.S. in the coming days. Many people are questioning the decision to bring the two American aid workers to the United States to be treated. According to the New York Times, Dr. Bruce S. Ribner, an infectious disease specialist at Emory and who will be caring for these patients, said, "The reason we are bringing these

4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
