Around The Garden Center

I hate going to work in the dark. I'm out of the door by 6:50am and the sun doesn't rise until 7:10am, so half my ride into the Garden Center is in the dark. Pretty soon, it'll be dark driving home, as well. I hate that, too. I'm looking forward to Winter Hours — Mon - Fri, 10am - 3pm; Closed on Sat & Sun — so I can get some much-needed sleep. I'm burned-out doing all these complicated estimates and getting only a middling response, due to the sour economy and a government-touted 9.6% unemployment rate, which is more realistically at 19 - 20%, nationally. Another 95,000 jobs lost in September. Progress, Mr Øbummer? I don't think so. This National Depression is going to last another 5-10 years, IMO, and Small Businesses like mine, are going to suffer the most, since we generate the most jobs for the economy. The problem is that most small businesses are in the "disposable income" category and people just aren't spending; they're saving money for *what's coming*, after January 1st, 2011.

Saturday was a very busy day, with lots of customer coming through, buying lots of trees and shrubs, and Rich & I spent 4 hrs with a client worth a $51,575 lscp job. He has to present it to the HOA in Regent's Glenn, for approval, since it involves a water garden, sidewalks and landscape lighting. In addition, two ladies bought 3 additional tree to their initial order of 2 to be installed, and need a full-blown, 2-phase lscp plan for their entire property. I left a 4pm to visit a customer's home who'd put a Serbian Spruce and 2 Doug Firs in deep shade, which killed them in 2 years; they each need 6-8hrs of sun per day, and weren't getting it. He and I will have some "words" on Sunday, when he returns, and I will not sell him anymore conifers, except small Hemlock seedlings, for his 90% shady property.

Sunday was twice as busy as Saturday, and we're now booked into the 2nd week of November with tree installations and landscape jobs. I just hope the weather holds-up, and the Fall rainy season doesn't come too early. We can't dig trees in my muddy growing fields, nor can we drive my 3-Ton, 3-year-old JD 317 SkidLoader or even my 2-Ton, 20-year-old JD 675B SkidLoder-Backhoe onto customer's lawns without doing a lot of damage and lawn repair work. Rich, my Staff Landscape Architect, is still working on a few more designs, one of which we picked-up on Saturday afternoon. The "shady property" customer was in Sunday afternoon, and I agreed to replace the 3 conifers with inexpensive Hemlock seedlings, but if I can't find them locally, I'll offer him 3 Winterberry Hollies (2 female, i male pollenator). We're moving a lot of materials out the doors, but at 50% off, not making much money on the merchandise. We're already "booked into April & May of 2011 with landscape jobs from just one customer, for a "woodland fairy garden" for her granddaughter, plus some of the patio projects, and I expect some of the 90+ estimate I've done this year will come-in, but not at the 50% discount price. I'll offer a 21% Discount at The 21st Open House since it's 21st Anniversary, but not to landscape customers; just to cash-and carry customers on that weekend.

This whole Mid-Atlantic Region has been plagued by "stink bugs", aka brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), aka Harlequin Beetles, this whole Summer and Fall Season. Usually, it's Jap Beetles, but they were minimal this year, due to my pushing V on hundreds of customers formerly-plagued with them, which has reduced the bug population by 50%+ in 2-3 years. The "stink bugs" all over the place; I've never seen them so plentiful and bad. They're everywhere in businesses and homes. Here's how to rid your dwellings of them. Don't bare-hand-handle them, as some impart a nasty bite; use a wet Kleenex or paper towel to pick them off the doors or wall, and flush them down the toilet. I've done this hundreds of times at my condo, since they come in through the front glass storm door and manage to squeeze inside the main wooden door. They're easy to spot and I use PERMETHRIN to treat the outside plants, and use BAYGON to rid them inside my condo, or just pick them off the front door and flush them before they lay eggs for Spring. If you don't catch and kill them right now, you'll have an infestation like you won't believe next Spring & Summer!

I started and finished another complex, multi-phase landscape estimate of Rich's, on Tuesday, re-priced/ re-tagged some trees and started looking through other nursery stock growers' catalogs, since I'd faxed Iseli Nursery's 18-page order on Sunday. I normally order in July for the following year, so that I get a good selection, but with the 50% Off Fall Sale still going on, I'm purposely delaying most of the orders to just see what we have left when we put away nursery stock in the GHs, for Winter storage. I'm working on Blue Sterling Nursery's order this week. I emailed my other nursery stock brokers about meeting with them separately, next week, to complete the process with some of the growers they represent. Two couples whom I'd done estimates for — Rich did one design and Alan did the other — visited at 3:30pm to look at the plans and plant materials, but I had errands to run and locked & armed the Main Building, bypassing Alan's LSCP HQ, and left. Alan closed-up his building around 5:30pm, and locked the front gate.

Jim, my nursery broker rep from McHutchison met with me on Wednesday to order nursery stock for next Spring. I'm buying locally from several of his growers, so that I don't have to pay 35-40% freight on the loads coming from Oregon. Iseli only charges 11-12% for freight from Oregon, so they're a bargain, even with the "fuel surcharge".

Speaking of fuel, gas prices at the pumps have skyrocketed over the past three weeks: up 35-40¢/ gallon. Unleaded Regular (87oct) now at $2.79, Unleaded Premium (89oct) now at $2.89/gal, and Unleaded Super Premium (92oct) at $3.09/gal, with Diesel also rising to $3.19/gal.

I left work at 4:30pm, leaving Dad, Rich & Arthur to close-down, to get to my ear doctor's appointment, and then back to my condo, loaded-up my duffel bag and rifle, and headed to The Cabin, for a restful might. Thursday was my day off, and I planned to stay there most of the day, meeting with the management from M&MC Corp (Minerals & Mining Corp), to go over assay reports and gold totals. I could get my food shopping done at Bev & Tony's General Store, and bring it back with me, instead of having to make the trek to WEIS, in York.

I disarmed the building, brought-in my gear, turned on the lights and police scanner, and Jenny was happy to see me. I refilled her 3 bowls and she emptied them in short order, then went over and sat by the massive hearth. I carried-in several armloads of seasoned split firewood from the back porch, lit a roaring fire with the kindling and split wood, and had 2-3 3ft logs to throw on to the fire within an hour or two, if needed. I also turned-up the furnace to 72°F to keep the place warm all night, since the temps would be dropping into the upper-30s. I closed the damper ¼ of the fireplace the to conserve some heat. Jenny laid down on her Kodiak Bearskin Rug, and slept.

My CPA & Tax Attorney would be my protectors. We'll see. Was it worth all the killing and death? Probably not, but the Holtzapples and Groves brought it on; I didn't.

I shaved, showered and changed into fresh clothes, and went to sleep. I'd deal with M&MC Corp (Minerals & Mining Corp) execs tomorrow to determine the final assays of gold nuggets and ore, and what belonged to me, an what their cut. Right now, I was too tired to deal with it all, and went to sleep.

I had all day-off Thursday, so I slept-in until 1pm, when Andy from R.E. Sanders Plumbing showed-up at my condo (I left a key for him to get inside and called my cellphone) to find out why my Rheem Tankless Water Heater was cutting-off my hot water, after only 5 minutes of showering. Rheem is FED-EX-ing a new board and chips to RE Sanders overnight so we can hopefully get this POS fixed. Last year, the entire burner unit was replaced, and the problem continues. He called me and filled me in on the details.

The final numbers came in with two reps from the mining company arriving at 2pm. With 32,000 ounces in a ton, and 2.3 tons (73,600 ounces), and with gold currently (10.14.10) at $1,376/oz, the pure gold would be worth $101,273,600.00 on today's market, minus M&MC Corp (Minerals & Mining Corp's 10% fee, and the US Govt's taxes on it. I had several hundred pounds of nuggets stashed away from the corrupt US Gov'ts prying eyes, for my own usage.

I went back to sleep after the mining company execs left at 3pm, but Jenny needed feeding, and I refilled her 3 bowls and climbed back into bed for a few hours. I was dead-tired from working 6-day weeks during The Fall Sale. It was raining hard and the pre-dug holes for the "Princeton" American Elms were beginning to collapse-in on themselves, so they'd need cleaning-out before Tim & I planted, staked and mulched them. My rain gauge read 4.5" already; no telling what they got down in York.

By 4pm, I was up and dressed, bed made, laundry done and decided to go to Nell's Place for lunch-dinner; it was empty and I was seated right away. I ordered a hot roast beef sandwich, smothered with brown gravy, fries, smothered with brown gravy and a piece of cheesecake pie w/ strawberries.
