more than 65 million seniors got their pockets picked last week, and the hue and cry could be heard across the country.

The Social Security Administration announced Thursday that there would be no cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2016.
Yes, America’s elderly, who paid into the system with each paycheck, are getting screwed.
And that’s due to the way the SSA’s COLA calculation is done – it essentially comes directly from the notoriously inaccurate Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Why not use the “Core CPI,” which strips out food and energy and is not subject to the volatile swings in commodities prices?
As if the static benefit level were not bad enough, Medicare Part D is jacking up costs – though the premiums have to remain the same.
Next year for Medicare Part D, seniors will see significant increases in what I call the “Real Costs”.
Medicare’s deductible in 2015 is $320. In 2016, it’s going up to $360 – a 12.5 percent increase.
The Initial Coverage Limit will be raised to $3,310 in 2016 from $2,960 in 2015 – an 11.8 percent increase.
And even more unfair: The Catastrophic Limit is going up from $7,062 this year to $7,515 in 2016. That’s a 6.4 percent jump in a coverage the elderly need most.
To deny seniors even a modest increase in benefits is unscrupulous. But it is beyond distasteful to have Medicare raise deductibles and coverage thresholds and claim there is no cost increase in Medicare premiums.
The Obama administration has the distinction of being the only presidency to rook seniors not once but three times – 2010, 2011 and 2016.
That’s a hat trick no leader should want.
Executive orders are now commonly used to skirt regulations. If the administration really cares about a generation that has given much to this country, why not issue such an order now for even a modest increase that would give our elderly invaluable peace of mind?

A Day In The Life
I overslept on Friday morning. Up at 8am, to 51°F outside, I had to hurry to get some coffee and get going to drive to Dad's and take him to an Eye Dr's follow-up appointment, at 10. Becky was sick, so she emailed me late last night about taking him to the appointment. I picked him up at 9:15, and after we arrived at the Dr's offices south of York in Spry, he was running 90mins behind, as the other doc was "out for the day". Bullshit. All went well and by 11:30, we were on the way home when we stopped to get some local homemade Handel's ice cream. I tried a nearby PNC Bank, and my Visa CC was unable to withdraw any cash, due to "account problems". More bullshit. After using-up my in-pocket cash, we headed north on Queen St, when I tried to get on I-83 North, it was backed-up down to the MD line (17 miles) due to a massive accident at Market St, so I did a "semi-legal u-turn" on the on/off-ramp, and went north on George St thru York. Semis were clogging the sideroads and city streets, and hundreds of cars and trucks were bailing-off of I-83 North, as I did. Still more bullshit. Anyway, I was hungry from not having eaten all morning and being mildly stressed from the morning's "adventure", and just as I was making a mid-afternoon Ham & Swiss on Rye Sandwich and Onion Rings, I got a call from my realtor at Bennett-Williams letting me know that they had another showing, on Tuesday, and I might be needed as a guide around the property and buildings; they'd let me know on Monday. Good. After turning down the one lease offer, I need a sensible offer. I had a growing pile of mail, documents and other paperwork on my desk, to get to, so after a brief walk around the Complex for some fresh air, I decided to get started on it. By 7:30, I'd made a dent but was tiring of it, so I switched-on the news, and then over to "Gold Rush" until the 2hr new season show was on at 9pm. On Saturday morning, I got up at 7:30 after a night of little sleep and back/hip pain, and the pain was still with me. I ate a handful of Bayer® 325mg Aspirin with OJ, got the cold-pak from the garage freezer and used it for most of the day. As long as I sat bolt upright in one of my Breuer Chairs, with the cold-pak applied to my right lower back, and kept stoked on aspirin, I was almost okay and not in bad pain. I could already tell that I wasn't going to do any outdoor work, though I had several things on my "to do list" for the day. After coffee, I laid down on the LR couch, covered with Sherry's gift Afghan, and listened to streamed Gardening Talk Radio until 12 noon. I fell asleep for the rest of the afternoon and woke-up around 6:45pm as it was almost dark. Not even hungry due to the earlier pain, it had now subsided and I limped into the kitchen to check the weather and days' news on the computer. I turned-on my Samsung Rugby 4 (AT&T) Flip Phone, and found 8 voicemails, only two of which I needed to answer. That done, I put the melted cold-pak into the freezer, and got a new one to use for the short evening ahead. Temps were dropping fast, already down from 58° to 39°, so I fired-up the heat to warm-up the condo. I watched some new episodes of "American Pickers", ate another handful of aspirin, and shut it all down at 9pm.
It truly felt cold at 8:30 on Sunday morning, at just 28°F outside, so the furnace was fired-up straight away. It'd dropped from 74° to 69° inside, overnight. The new electric blanket
will go on the (modern style) "Marlowe" QS Bed in two weeks. I usually don't use one, since my body generates enough steady heat to keep the bed über warm. I grabbed the Turkish bathrobe, made some OJ, coffee and Creamed Chipped Beef & Gravy Over Toast, w/ Peas, one of my Sunday-after-Church kid favorites, aka "comfort food", from back in the 50s. After the news, weather – another ***FREEZE WARNING*** Forecast 25° – and email, I switched over to listening to the week's missed Chris Plante Show podcasts, while I still had lower back/hip pain, and I decided not to go for a short walk, rather stay inside near the aspirin and cold-pak, while doing laundry and condo chores; after that, the dreaded paperwork. I had a lot on the plate for tomorrow, and needed to rest-up.
After the news and weather, I watched 3 episodes of "Mobsteel" until 11:30, and reruns of "Billy The Kid: New Evidence – Face", and "Billy The Kid: New Evidence – Sweater". By 1:30am, I'd had enough, outdoor temps had dropped to 30° and were getting worse, so I left the heat at 68°, instead of shutting it off for the night, as usual. End of day.
Monday morning at 7:30 was even colder than last night, at 24°F, and the condo was just at the 68° mark I'd set last night. Maybe the electric blanket should go on sooner than I'd planned. I made OJ and coffee, had a BLT with Fried Egg, Cheese Sandwich, started to listen to Chris Plante Show, but bugged-out at 9:30am. The 20 mile ride down Rt 24 South was smooth, and I had the heat on despite having a Pendleton® Woolen Shirt and a Lined Tan Barn Coat. I'm thinking it's soon time to get out my "Indy" Stetson Fedora. Almost half of the vast fields were being harvested, and the other half were waiting; corn and
I got the 4 Rxs at Rite Aid, talked with some old friends and customers, went next door to Saubel's Market to get some things, and ran into more people from years past. Nice to hear that most are doing well, despite all the 0sambo shit coming down on everyone. A few had health problems and weren't as exuberant about their futures. I forgot special CFL lightbulbs for the GC&N replacements, so I'll come back down next week and get the 5-6 replaced before Winter comes. They last 2-3yrs on continuous duty, so that save me from having to come down in bad weather to change them, every 90 days or so. No, I don't use them at home; I've got 400-500 various wattage incandescent bulbs in my prep stores.
On the way home, I called Dad; he's fine, and was just getting ready to drive to his Podiatrist appointment. So I headed home to unpack the Jeep, and get some aspirin for my hip/back. I made a Grilled Cheese w/ Ham Sandwich & Potato Salad, settled-in at 6pm, to catch the computer's streaming news and weather, and to watch some episodes of the new "Vegas Rat Rods" marathon, until 10:30; then bagged it for the day.
I slept-in until 8am on Tuesday, and it was much warmer outside than the past few days; ergo, the condo was not as chilly without overnight heat. While checking the weather and news, OJ and coffee
A lady named "Audrey" called and started singing to me over the phone, and asked "if I was coming up for the weekend?" Huh? It was a wrong number; she was calling her boyfriend in Camp Hill or Harrisburg, and I got things back on track for her. Sounds like she'd been tipping some cocktails, a bit early. Amusing. After a big bowl of Lentil & Vegetable Soup, I watched the evening news, listened to the morning's missed Chris Plante Show podcast, and switched over to some "Gold Rush" reruns and this season's first show, until 11:30, and quit for the night.
Awake at 7:30, I and the pillow were drenched in sweat, so I got up. My last few nights' sleep were good. Propping-up the pillow to let it dry out, I switched pillows for tonite but couldn't figure out why the sweating had occurred. No fever, condo temp cool, no weird dreams I can remember... no matter. My former GC&N foreman emailed that he/his crew would be by around 12:30-1pm to get my outdoor Fall maintenance done, so I needed to get going and get some things done. I drove over to see Dad around 9am, but he was still asleep, so I quietly left to get the two unfinished errands done from yesterday, and make some other stops.
Back home by 11:30, I unloaded the Jeep, made a Roast Beef, Slaw, Tomato & Cheese Sandwich with chips, scanned the news and weather, no email, and started streaming the morning's missed Chris Plante Show podcast until the landscape guys showed-up. Temps were already up into the low-70s, and quite a change from the past few days and nights. We're in for some warmer weather, before the cold returns on Friday. Standard procedure with the realty company is to call me with a report from the client of how the showing went, and have a preliminary offer; I'll wait with no expectations. It's usually 3-5 days later. My former foreman called and he was delayed for another 2hrs on the current job, so he'd now be there between 2:30-3pm. The landscape crew arrived at 2pm, and within 40mins, had perennials and grasses cut down, debris raked and loaded into the dump truck and hard areas swept clean. Thorough, fast and efficient, just as I taught them many years ago. $50.
For the rest of the evening, I paid a few bills, did paperwork and filing, caught the evening news and weather, and watched some new "American Pickers" episodes; then called it a day.
Up at 8am on Thursday, I fired-up the computer, made OJ and coffee, checked the weather, news and, lo and behold, email was working. One of my investment partners wanted me to meet him in Annapolis and look at a cache of antique firearms for sale, similar to these; he was in Baltimore on business and would meet me at 11am, at one of his client's homes, where the gunsafes were. I grabbed a large pile of cash and hit I-83 South at 9:30, well after the rush hour. By 11:45, we'd struck a deal on 11 of 13 Pennsylvania/Kentucky Long Rifles, gotten proper bills of sale paid and signed, and left. Two were "restored" and not worth what original condition antique rifles are, to serious collectors. My friend made two calls to two collectors in Harrisburg, and had them all sold at a nice profit, before we even left for York. He was going to take the muzzleloading flintlock rifles up to the receipients, since he knew them, and we'd meet up later to reconcile everything.
I was back in York by 2:30pm, after a stop in Shrewsbury for gas, and glad to get off the interstates before traffic got heavy in the afternoon. I took the Jeep over to the nearby DIY car wash, drove home and ate some aspirin for my aching back/hip. Temps were up to 75°F. After the pain, subsided, I went for a short walk around the area, and came back home to get something to eat. After a Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup, I had some condo chores to do, and worked on those until it got dark. My friend stopped by with a large pile of cash from the sale, and I was more than happy with the day's business deal for just a few hours work. Not much on the evening news, but I watched anyway. History Channel had a couple of specials on, and I finished off the evening watching those, until 11.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and I still need to get some pre-Winter maintenance/repair work at the Old GC&N Complex, which I didn't get to this past week. Dad's outside landscape maintenance is scheduled for one day next week, and since I need to be there to review the job with the hired crew from W&S Landscape Services, I haven't scheduled anything for myself until after that 1-2 day project is completed. I won't find out exactly what day, until Monday, depending upon the weather and jobs ahead of us. After that's done, I'll begin the 2-3 day project at the Old GC&N Complex.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
