this has been a Fall unlike anyother year, which I can remember in the past 20yrs. "It is what it is". As I've said for many, many years, as is now uniquely-attributed to me: "Mother Nature's in charge; we're just along for the ride." Yep; that's oh-so true. While the local agricultural farmers have had a great time in harvesting their hundreds-of-thousands-of-of-acres' corn and bean crops, we in the horticultural industry have had a terrible time, with the drought conditions — The Unending Drought From Hell® — has prematurely-ended our season. If I hadn't mandated Drip Irrigation Systems (DIS) in my 5 Year Conditional Warranty, 5-6 years ago, I'd most likely already be out-of-business. The plant failure rate is quite low, as a result of the DIS, as compared to prior years without them in customers' landscapes. I've had to lay-off numerous landscapers, thereby diminishing my overall crews, during the drought. Even with my once-a-year, "25%-Off Fall Sale", in September-October, very few customers are buying, due to the drought conditions. The reality-blinded, thoughly-incompetent EPA-DER-Army Corps idiots in Harrisburg (PA), haven't even acknowledged, in the least, that the state is in a major drought, let alone issued *voluntary* or *mandatory* water-use restrictions. It boggles any sane, functioning, sentient mind, that such shit-for-brains Gov't-appointed cretins, would willfully-ignore such dire conditions, and gleefully continue-on, as if nothing were amiss. Assholes, IMO. That said, all we can do is hope for a better Spring, than the pitiful Summer and Fall, we've just been through. Just when I think we've got it bad, up here in the Mid-Atlantic Region, I read about theExceptional Drought (D4) in the Southeast Region, and wonder what's going to happen when Atlanta runs out of water, in >120 days? The DBM (drive by media) have been 100% silent on this looming disaster. There's no back-up plan for the Southeast, if the lakes and reservoirs run dry; 5 million-plus people are screwed. Yes, the US Gov't/US Army Corps of Engineers etc, have known about this since 2003, through their so-called "yearly workshops", and they've done absolutely nothing to limit population growth or secure additional water sources. Assholes and criminals; all of them! If Atlanta "goes dry", and 5 million people leave, where will they go? Irony? Think on this: the people in NOLA only had ~48 hours to evacuate the city before Hurricane Katrina deluged them with water, while the people in Atlanta have >2,880 hours to evacuate before they run out of water. The "population redistribution problem", is going to be on a scale, heretofore unknown in America. It makes me queasy, to even think about what the "migration possibilities" are/could be/will be, for the rest of the Southeast Region and Nation. 1-to-5 million people, on-the-move, into other USA Regions, and what will be the societal/financial result? I shudder to think of what's ahead of us. Perhaps it's a good training exercise, in the event that a massive, murderous, subhuman filth, muslim-islamist-arab-terrorist attack happens, and entire urban populations have to move/relocate from infected/contaminated/decimated cities, to safer areas. Are you ready for the consequences of such an event? I'm not sure I am, mentally; physically, I am, though. Right now, over 265,000 people are leaving the San Diego area, and this wildfire scenario will prove to be a fertile testing ground, for that other distinct possibility of drought evacuation and migration. By Thursday, Oct 26th, 365,000, 425,000, 550,000, 645,000, 755,000, 815,000, 875,000, 910,000, 996,000, 1,000,000+ have evacuated The Peoples' Republik of Southern Kali-Fornikkkate's wildfires, and the count is still rising. A whole lot less manpower, planning, cost and risk, IMO. I've studied The Enemies of America's "Mentally-Ill Methods & Their Insane Rationality", and this scenario fits the bill, quite well. IMO. It was arson, specifically by ELF (eco-terrorists), over the past 4-6yrs of Kalifornikkkate fires, IMO. Ever heard of them? That's because they're the "darlings" of the hard-left-wing media machine's propaganda. And you won't hear much about the, since they're a "protected minority group". Yikes and ouch2! The DJIA dropped 366.94pts last Friday — approaching the 508pt decline of '87s "Black Monday" — but it didn't go much further, before the NYSE closed at 4pm EST. Since I'm no longer heavily-invested in stocks, but rather in other long-term, other more conservative money-making areas, it didn't affect me very much; actually >0.01% of my total portfolio. A "butterfly-fart", in reality. Yawn. I hope you didn't get hurt too badly, BTW.
Personally, I'm really looking forward to closing-down the GC&N a few weeks early this season, though not due to "The Unending Drought From Hell". I just wish it was due to the normal season's early-ending, and not from an "natural abnormlity", such as the ongoing drought. Sure, we'll be well-below the past 17yrs' gross/net sales figures, but that's to be expected in an unusual time such as this, I'd guess. The massive cold-front and accompaying rains, which plunged through The Mid-Atlantic/North-East Regions, on last Friday through Saturday, did zero/nada/zip/zilch to alleviate the "The Unending Drought From Hell". Temps went back-up into the upper-70s/lower-80s over Sunday and Monday, albeit with lowered-humidity, and the 2-week forecast for rain shows essentially *nothing*.
With sweet, light (SA) crude oil, now at a record $90+/bbl, gas prices at the pump, jumped 12-14¢/gal, this week alone. Unleaded Regular is now at $2.85/gal, Unleaded Plus is up to $2.95/gal, and Unleaded Premium is now at $3.15/gal. I filled-up (Unleaded Regular) on Sunday afternoon, and wasn't really surprised at the price increase. This has been coming for a long time, IIRC. There are many more 'hikes', in-store for the American Public, over the coming months. Get ready for it, and get used to it. It "is what it is". As the refineries switch-over from Summer driving fuel, to Winter heating oil, and refineries are taken-offline, for the conversion, prices will continue to spike/rise.
The local cornfields are almost empty, and the soybean fields are being emptied, very-quickly now, as I watch the southern York County/northern Maryland Baltimore/Harford Counties being cleaned-out by gigantic John Deere Combines and Massey-Ferguson Combines, and I'm always amazed when I see those larger-than-a-house-machines, working in the fields, or driving on the roads. YIKES, they are massive machines, and I'm very impressed/awed/blown-away, by them and their operators.
I got a nasty case of food poisoning last Sunday eveninng, after eating a leftover "Y2K" can of ham & bean soup, with a grilled cheese sandwich. I was up many times during the night and Monday morning, throwing-up and... well, I won't go into *that other specific bodily-function*. After emptying my guts into the sink 5-6x, it was the painful, noisy 'dry-heaves' through Monday afternoon, as I'd dragged myself into work, with great abdominal pain and unending nausea, for the rest of the day. I just wished I could have just stayed in bed, but I had to go into work; no one to 'over for me', for the day. It was a truly-awful day, and I was just happy to get home, and get to bed early, for a change.
While recuperating from the *F-P* episode, on Monday evening, I noticed a massive rainy, weather-system moving-up from the Southeast into the Mid-Atlantic Region, but quite obviously moving 75-100 miles to the northwest of us, as has been the case all year. Dammit! We're just being missed, once again, by the brunt of the storm, and we will benefit very little from it, whan all's said and done. IMO. Dammit! I'd given my remaining LSCP Crews/GC&N Staff the day-off, "if" it became a downpour situation, but it was a measly-drizzle. Trying to safely-work in the muck/mud, isn't prudent, nor is it safe for my men and my machines, to do so. Result? The so-called "storm front" was all for naught, as everything missed us, went way west/north of us, and dumped anywhere from 2-6" of rainfall upon them (certainly not us!), and "blew us the raspberries". Bastards! (sigh)

Any and all rainfall is much appreciated and welcomed, here, in this badly-parched Mid-Atlantic Region of America. I'm truly looking forward to the next 1-2 days of cool, rainy weather, which will "help us", but with the previous 1-2 days of rainfall, the "ground moisture level" isincreased only minimally. The parched soils are so hard, that the rains have only soaked-in 2-3", and we have a ***very long way to go***, to get back the 10-14" of soil moisture we've lost over the past 6-9mos. I'm afraid that isn't going to happen. (((sigh)))
With sunrise coming at almost 8am, I'm ready to put my LSCP Crews and GC&N Staff on 8am-3:30pm hours, and get ready to finish-up the remaining LSCP Jobs, and begin some GC&N projects, as well as get ready to begin storing all the nursery stock, for the Winter months. It will take us 3-5 weeks to get all the storage completed, as there are thousands of potted shrubs/trees and perennials, to be packed-in, and stored. I also have a feeling that we're in for a "early Winter", and we need to get on to the projects, soon. I remember a year when we got caught in ice, after not getting onto the task of putting everything away, soon enough. Once was enough, IMO.

The mother and daughter were killed April 11, 2003, in Glen Rock when a dump truck, criminally-overloaded with topsoil and criminally-operating with faulty brakes, careened down Church Street and crushed their car at a school-bus stop. Eight others — including students who scrambled for safety on the sidewalk — were injured. After deliberating for several hours, a jury also convicted the criminal Sachs shithole, of eight counts of reckless endangerment. Sadly, the asshole Sachs bastard scumbag lowlife, was acquitted of two counts of involuntary manslaughter and eight counts of simple assault.

As for the new garden center/nursery operation, who bought-out the Blossom Valley Shithole murderers' facility and property — which laughingly calls itself "Superior Nursery"; a very poor choice of name, BTW — and who bought the property and structures, it "looks like same filthy shithole", as when it was Blossom Valley Shithole. No wonder people are staying away in droves, and making negative comments about the place, when they shop at my store. But I tell them not to pre-judge the new operation; give them a chance. The owner and his wife were here at my place a week or so ago, having a look around at a first-class operation, and I hope they'll get some ideas and clean-up/out that recycled-BVS shithole of theirs, and completely-renovate it so it doesn't look like it did, before they bought it.
