White roses and thornsSee also: Campaign finance reform bill points to better way WHITE ROSES: To York College, all too often under-appreciated locally as a temple of knowledge. The college is earning increasing respect for the education it offers. Victor Taylor, an assistant professor at YCP, provides an example why. He has written or edited a number of scholarly works, and his book, "Para/Inquiry: Postmodern Religion and Culture," is being used in courses at Boston College, the University of Denver and Syracuse University. THORNS: To York's Empowerment Team for deciding to hold all but one meeting a month in private. This committee was appointed to address problems after York City School District was declared one of 11 failing public school districts in the state. The public should be privy to what members discuss. ROSES: To Ivan Trattner, for whom this year's "York Walk for a Cure for Diabetes!" is being dedicated. Mr. Trattner co-founded the York Chapter of the American Diabetes Association and served several terms as president and vice president. His son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Dawn Trattner, are leading this year's event. ROSES: To Deb Lilley, whose outreach to children playing on the lawn at Asbury United Methodist Church in York has grown into a seven-week camp program for city children. ROSES: To Dallastown for agreeing to create a place for area skateboarders to practice their moves. Too few places welcome these young people and many end up skating where they should not. ROSES: To Ryan Fisher. The York Suburban High School senior has been named an All-American volleyball player. ROSES: To David Distefano of NuTec Design Associates Inc. for crawling into a stormwater basin pipe on Thursday to rescue nine little ducklings. The fowl had become stranded from their mother near his office on Concord Road. ROSES: Also, to Springettsbury Township Police officers and maintenance department personnel for helping to reunite the ducklings with their mother. THORNS: To whoever is using BB guns to shoot at vehicles parked along York streets. This is not a harmless prank. ROSES: To John Shelley's Garden Center and Nursery in Felton for donating $3,000 in shade trees to enhance New Freedom. ROSES: To Southern Regional Police Officer Mike Martin for making it a practice to stop by area day care centers to visit with the children. "The time he gives to the children at this young age will provide trust and a good comfort zone for police as they grow and develop," wrote Sandra Gayle, of A Touch of Country Day Care in Shrewsbury, to New Freedom borough council. ROSES: To Ms. Gayle for bringing the officer's good deeds to council's attention.
