bit by bit, everywhere in the landscape, there are both large trees dying and small tees/shrubs, flourishing. Over the past 3-5 weeks, Ive noticed the steady-progression of life-to-death, for large specimens. "The Unending Drought From Hell" has returned this 2008-2009 Winter, with a vengeance, unlike anything I have seen in my 19+ years. 7"total instead of 31" of snow, 8" down on rainfall since February. That's truly grim.
But despite the grim forecast, signs of life are popping through the dead-leaf clutter. Shallow-rooted plants are flourishing. Crocus, daff's, tulips, aliums, snowdrops etc, are doing well, with 4-7" of moisture in the ground. We're due for some April showers, according to the forecast.
Just 90 miles to the south in DC, The Annual Cherry Blossom Festival is ongoing through April 12th. We're about 3-4 weeks behind their weather, up here in USDA Zone 6b. Our cherries are just showing a tad-bit of prink or white.

The "Headache From Hell" finally abated on Thursday evening, and I began to feel almost "normal" again. I was in to work by 7:45am and checked the rain gauge; it looked like just under ½" at the GC& Complex, yet I got almost ¾" at my condo in East York. I drove home through some pretty heavy squalls on Thursday afternoon. Friday and Saturday were busy days, with numerous people stopping-by to see what the retail nursery holds, so far. Orders for mulch and topsoil deliveries also came in, but not with the frequency or urgency of past years. Friday was the first issuance of paychecks for the season. Numerous customers stopped by to check out our inventory-to-date, others placed orders for mulch and topsoil deliveries, many dozens of calls came through requesting prices on all sort of things, which we easily handled. Despite what the calendar says about it being Spring, in most peoples' minds, it's still Winter. The premium screened topsoil is too wet and cold yet, for the machines to sift it, so we're on a waiting list for a 22-ton delivery, when it's ready. Old joke: here in Penna we have 4 seasons: Winter, more Winter, it's still Winter, and road construction. Heh.
Gas prices jumped 20¢ last Friday, with Unleaded Regular (87oct) rising to $2.05/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is now at $2.15/gal, and Unleaded Super Premium (92oct) is now at $2.35/gal, with Diesel actually stabilizing at $2.29/gal. The "Summer Driving Season" cometh — or maybe it won't because of the economy — so the refineries have made their changeover from home heating oil to gasoline, in preparation.
I've begun re-watching "Jericho" Seasons 1 & 2 again, and couldn't stop. Help meeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Saturday morning was another busy day with a lot of visitors and scores of calls. I even had one moron call and ask "what are you serving to eat at your Open House?" I told him stale cookies and weak Kool-Aid. I think I'm done forever with the $3,000 catered lunch for the 400-500 (of 1,500) people who actually eat, that day. I'm finally tired of freeloaders and bums.
It rained Sunday morning, so I slept-in with the cats until 8:30. By 11am, the rains had moved to the west and north of us, and the skies began clearing; our chance for more needed-moisture was indeed over. I made a food shopping list, went to Weis Markets and then down to the office for a few hours. I spent 2½hrs at the office paying bills, filing, getting the upcoming lscp job estimates/jackets readied for this week's work, posted the weekly work schedule, swept the Main Retail Bldg, returned some dishes/silverware that I'd washed on Saturday evening, emptied garbage and cleaned the bathroom. "Boss stuff". I'm going to hate going back on *7-days-a-week* for the Spring months, beginning in 2-3 weeks, but I've no choice. This is a "make-or-break" year for us, in every sense of the word. I hope my employees take it seriously, because the year-end numbers will decide my business' future.
Over the past 2-3 days, we'd gotten close to ¾" of rain; enough to wet the top 4-5" of soil, but nowhere near enough to make-up for the -23" of rainfall/snow melt we've missed since December. Crocus, daffodils, shallow-rooted smaller trees and shrubs are benefiting, but large, long-established specimens are dying for the lack of water at their root levels, deep in the ground. With floods in the Midwest and Upper Plains states, we're in another drought cycle. Natch.
Last week, three different employees asked me if they were going to get raises this year, although I'd specifically said "NO RAISES" less than two weeks ago, in our first 2009 Key Staff Mtg. Their rationale was that since I wasn't filling "a bunch of empty positions" — 2 Key Staff and 3-6 LSCP Crew jobs — that there'd be "plenty of money available for raises". I'll admit that I got a "little agitated" with all three, but what is it that some people just don't understand about: 1) you're damned lucky to even have a job this year, 2) you're double-damned lucky I didn't cut all employee wages 10-20%, as a lot of companies have done, 3) that drastically-cutting expenses in a recession is a first step, 4) and that more Draconian measure of laying-off more people temporarily/permanently, is what's coming next, people. I have to keep my business' doors open, at all costs. I won't even be taking my monthly paycheck for the next 2-3mos (as I haven't since Nov '08), to help save money and guard the cash flow. I'll live on what savings I have left, and my expected IRS refund, for all the money my business lost in 2008. God help me, I wish all of those people would be forced to run a small business for just one freaking year, and they'd see how difficult it is, and what personal sacrifices have to be made on a daily basis, by the owner. They have no f•cking clue; none at all.
A *Severe Thunderstorm Warning* was posted at around 3:15pm for York County, and other nearby counties, as a massive blood-red-purple cell moved right at us. Woo-hoo! If it hits, it's going to be a "trash can mover", and I'm already shutting down my condo's superfast RAID 0 Array (1-Tb) and WDC External (1-Tb) and unplugging the cable modem etc. If it misses us, no biggie. It didn't, and it hit us with 70-90mph winds and 1-3" of pea-sized hail, 2lbs of which I ran out and gathered-up in a Zip-Loc Baggie, and put into the freezer. My condo's skylights and greenhouse rooms windows are all tempered glass, so there was no damage, but it felt like we were "under enemy small arms attack" for 15-20mins. The lawns and streets were white with 1-2" of hail. Wowzer! My corporate server in nearby New Park, was down for hours, apparently effecting "repairs" from the storm. www.gdnctr.com is offline, until further notice.

On Monday afternoon, the atty I'd mailed a $157 check to last week, for a 1st draft of the HICPA Law, sent me the "draft copy" in MS-Word. I was stunned at the 8 pages of f•cking legalese bullshit!!! I re-read it 7x, just to be sure, and got more and more pissed-off about that shit! I may just scrap it and write one myself; I have until July 1st to do "something".
My A-Team LSCP Crew was out on Monday and Tuesday, and finished-up their large LSCP Maintenance Job on Wednesday. Then, they started another LSCP Job on Thursday & Friday. We had two nursery broker deliveries which Seth, Jennifer & I (sort of helped) unloaded. We're missing 2 more trucks to complete the Spring '09 load. I participated in a PLNA 'Webinar' from 1-2pm, about HICPA Law, which is very worrisome and interferes in my honest small business. I have no choice but to comply.

He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and was dragged away. During the subsequent beating, he fell forward on to the camp Commandant's feet, which sent that officer berserk. In 1978, the Air Force Colonel still suffered from double vision (which permanently ended his flying career) from the Commandant's frenzied application of wooden baton. From 1963-65, Col. Larry Carrigan was in the 47FW/DO (F-4E's). He spent 6 years in the 'Hanoi Hilton', the first three of which his family only knew he was 'missing in action'. His wife lived on faith that he was still alive. His group, too, got the cleaned-up, fed and clothed routine in preparation for a 'peace delegation' visit!
They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they were alive and still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his Social Security Number on it, in the palm of his hand. When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: 'Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?' and 'Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?' Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took them all without missing a beat. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge and handed him all the little pieces of paper. Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Colonel Carrigan was almost number four but he survived, which is the only reason we know of her actions that day. You may already have Century Gothic on your Windows-XP machine, and that's almost always used for the body copy or subheads, so grab it, if you don't already have it; you're reading it now. They're free from my website. Grab 'em! Save them to your HD, and install to C:/Windows/Fonts (folder), thru your WIN XP Control Panel > Fonts > File > Install New Font. Simple stuff; just takes a few minutes.

So what explained the anomaly? GISS's computerized temperature maps seemed to show readings across a large part of Russia had been up to 10 degrees higher than normal. But when expert readers of the two leading warming-skeptic blogs, Watts Up With That and Climate Audit, began detailed analysis of the GISS data they made an astonishing discovery. The reason for the freak figures was that scores of temperature records from Russia and elsewhere were not based on October readings at all. Figures from the previous month had simply been carried over and repeated two months running.
