it was a bellweather article, when it appeared several months ago, and the following series of articles about the poisoned petfoods, and the poisoned medicenes, and the poisoned cosmetics, and the poisoned toothpastes, and the poisoned lead-paint on children's toys, and the poisoned seafood, the poisoned RU-486, a chemical abortion pill, and the poisoned vitamins, and the deadly automobile tires, etc etc etc, coming from that stinking, filthy, polluted, turd-world hellhole, China, was indeed eye-opening for millions of people, around the world. That hundreds-of-thousands of household pets, and tens-of-thousands of people were/are sick and dying, was almost secondary; the primary thrust of it all was that the US Government was inspecting >3% of the garbage/shit/trash/junk/crap/filth from China. The USFDA (US Food & Drug Administration) was and still is, criminally-negligent in their duties and job tasks. The USFDA regulatory structure is seriously under-resourced, understaffed and essentially-incapable of meeting many of its responsibilities on ensuring food safety. China's contamination problems stem in large part from its loose regulations and highly fragmented food production. Hundreds of millions of small farmers grow its food, and they rely heavily on chemicals to coax production out of intensively cultivated soils and to fight pests. The result: China has one of the world's highest rates of chemical fertilizer use per hectare, and Chinese farmers use many highly toxic pesticides, including some that are banned in the US, according to a report published last November by the economic-research service of the US Department of Agriculture. But the food shipments that get tested are the exception, not the rule. The volume of food imports from overseas is approaching 10 million per year, and the number that FDA inspectors physically examine is in the single digit thousands — making it virtually certain that any given food shipment will enter the United States with no FDA inspection. Cause for concern? I'm afraid we're long past that mere tipping-point. In many cases, the burden of ensuring that food shipped out of China is safe, falls upon the unknown, faceless, unregulated foreign buyers, who negotiate with Chinese producers over what quality standards the food must meet. The current problems with pet foods began in mid-March. Ontario-based Menu Foods Inc, which produces major brands like Eukanuba and Iams, recalled its "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches after receiving information that pets that ate the product had fallen ill. The recall was later extended to more products. Within nearly a week of the recall, the company received complaints or expressions of concern from about 200,000 consumers. What to do? Buy foods, medicenes, vitamins, cosmetics etc etc etc, from somewhere other than China? Good freaking luck! Lost amid the anxiety surrounding the tainted US pet food supply is this sobering reality: It's not just pet owners who should be worried. The uncontrolled distribution of low-quality imported food ingredients, mainly from China, poses a grave threat to public health worldwide. Essential ingredients, such as vitamins used in many packaged foods, arrive at US ports from China and, as recent news reports have underscored, are shipped without inspection to food and beverage distributors and manufacturers. Although they are used in relatively small quantities, these ingredients carry enormous risks for American consumers. One pound of tainted wheat gluten could, if undetected, contaminate as much as a thousand pounds of food. Unlike imported beef, which is inspected at the point of processing by the US Agriculture Department, few safeguards have been established to ensure the quality of food ingredients from China. Often, US officials don't know where or how such ingredients were produced. We know, however, that alarms have been raised about hygiene and labor standards at many Chinese manufacturing facilities. In China, municipal water used in the manufacturing process is often contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides and other chemicals. Food ingredient production is particularly susceptible to environmental contamination. Even if Food and Drug Administration regulators wanted to crack down on products emanating from the riskiest foreign facilities, they couldn't, because they have no way of knowing which ingredients come from which plant. This is why officials have spent weeks searching for the original Chinese source of the contaminated wheat gluten that triggered the pet food crisis. What about the "Country Of Origin Labeling" (COOL)? On May 13, 2002, President Bush signed into law the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, more commonly known as The 2002 Farm Bill. One of its many initiatives requires country of origin labeling for beef, lamb, pork, fish, perishable agricultural commodities and peanuts. On January 27, 2004, President Bush signed Public Law 108-199 which delays the implementation of mandatory COOL for all covered commodities except wild and farm-raised fish and shellfish until September 30, 2006. On November 10, 2005, President Bush signed Public Law 109-97, which delays the implementation for all covered commodities except wild and farm-raised and shellfish until September 30, 2008. As described in the legislation, program implementation is the responsibility of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service. Have you tried reading labels on individual food packages, before you buy them? It's maddening, IMO, and very misleading. I've tried, over the past 12-16 weeks, and have gotten frustrated. While it may be listed that the shellfish are grown and harvested in Thailand, the individual ingredients used with the fish, aren't listed. Same with Centrum® or Rexall® vitamins. Chemicals, antibiotics, dyes, additives, presevatives etc etc etc, just aren't detailed. If they were, the product label would be pages and pages long, and would require bifocals or magnifying glasses to read all the fine print. (((sigh))) Try going to WalMart™, Home Depot™, Costco™, Sam's Club™, or one of those "big box retailers", and choosing some of their cheap, junk products, 89% of which are "Made In China", and finding out the COOL information, on any of them. You can't. I've tried and have given-up trying, BTW. China is a filthy, turd-world shithole, and has no quality-controls in-place, to check anything, be it food, cosmetics, vitamina, toys, shitty and dangerous cars, or whatever. It is commie-government controlled, and not a capitalism effort, and it will always be sub-standard, shoddy, turd-world products, until their corrupt, criminal, bribe-riddled, govenment chink/gook/dink scum, get out of the country's corporate businesses. Forget it, chinese consumers: you're getting nowhere and getting nothing from the corrupt, criminal chink/gook/dink-controlled courts in your turd-world shithole. Around The Garden Center™.

This article on jury duty jogged my memory: I was supposed to go to US District Court in Harrisburg, back in April, for jury selection, but wrote a letter to be excused, due to my busy Spring season, and will now have to go sometime in August, a return letter from the US District Court Clerk  said. So I'm expecting a notice to report for jury duty selection, anytime now. Drat; but I will go and serve if selected. That's my duty and I will not shirk it.



Yikes, my IRA and investments aren't liking last week: DJIA down 262pts on Tuesday, and down 311 on Thursday and down another 208 on Friday! Next to the week after 9-11, it was the worst week I can remember, in the past 4-5 years. The Lord giveth and the Lord really taketh away! Fortunately, it's only a temporary blip, and it'll be back over 14,000 again, within a couple of weeks.



Retail traffic was moderately-heavy-to-moderately-moderate (heh!), on Saturday, surprisingly, for the Summer months. Usually, the months of July and August, are 'retail dead', and 'landscape jobs are pre-booked', from the early Spring months. Kt's also time to get a bunch of GC&N-centric projects, done.



On Saturday, I closed down at 4:45pm, because a "Severe Storm Warning" had been issued, and frankly, I and my weekend staff, were tired from the 90°F heat and 95% humidity. I'd no more gotten home, and logged-on to the local weather channels, than I saw one of the largest, ***HUGE RED CELL STORMS*** moving right into York (PA), with 60-70mph winds, ¾"-sized hail, torrential rain, flooding and air-to-ground lightening. I quickly unplugged the CM (cable modem), super-fast RAID 0+1 computer, turned-off the AC and lights, and watched the storm ravage York, from the front door, with my two condo cats. The thunder and lightening was stunning, and the rain so intense, that I couldn't see more than 200ft out of the door. Dad was trapped on the road, pulled under a tree, and had a large branch crash-down upon his Jeep's roof. $2,800 damage! He escaped without injury, thankfully. The water ran 1-2ft in the streets, well up onto the sidewalks and lawns, and billion-gallon retention ponds quickly overflowed. The storms moved east to Lancaster, and I got the condo electrics back to normal, and followed its progress, until the "Severe Storm Warning" was lifted, at 6:25pm. Whew; what a day's ending! Glad to get the rain, BTW.



More t-storms storms woke me at both 3am and 6am, on Sunday morning, with huge, intense lightening displays and downpours on the condo's skylights. I fed the cats at 6:30am, and went back to sleep until 10. Then, I went food shopping for some of the items I'l need for Friday's "Summer Light" Dinner, with Jeff & Denise. After nearly 3 weeks of prescription Prednisome Steroids , for the skin condition, Alopecia Areata, and "systemic chromium-nickel posioning", from that Breuer Chair chrome frame, I'm just starting to get my long-gone appetite back (lost 43lbs since Nov 2006), and am looking forward to having dinner/cheffing for them all, Dave & Jacky, etc etc Conservative Friends, once again. The past 9-10 months have been very trying, IMO. After 56 of my 57 years of healthy living, to have it all go down the dumper, in the past 9-10mos, is quite daunting and depressing. Taking so many medications is something which I truly hate and despise.



On Sunday evening, more heavy-rain t-storms (non-violent, this time), moved through the York (PA) area, dumping almost 2" of rain on us, with streets and gutters overflowing 1-2ft onto sidewalks and lawns, and submerging entire yards with lakes and rivers of rainfall runoff. Thunder and lightening were everywhere — no wind and no hail, this time — but the rainfall was what was stunning. East York (PA) got the brunt of it, it seems, and I went to the front door tom watch it ***pour, dogs and cats***. The rain's roar on the condo's skylights was deafening, and I'm just sorry that it wasn't spread over a 24hr period, with so much more soaking-in, rather than running-off into gutters, retention ponds, creeks, streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Wow, what a rainfall! By 10:15pm, it was over, but we'd had a serious, measureable rainfall, and I was happy for the flora and fauna.



Gas prices falling 17¢-plus in the past two weeks? Gas prices have dropped over 16¢ in the past two week (since July 13th), in the York (PA) area. Unleaded Regular is now at $2.73/gal, Unleaded Plus is at $2.83/gal, and Unleaded Premium is at $3.03/gal. That's the closest spread between the three grades of gas at the pumps, that I've seen in a long time. No complaints!



By Monday, the "local weather forecasts", had almost zero prediction of any continuing rainfall, for the next 8-10 days, and with coming temps in the mid-90s, humidity levels around 90%, it got very, very uncomfortable. I couldn't go anywhere or do anything, without breaking a profuse sweat. "Women perspire; men sweat." Wow, where did the Summer go? It's August already, the "Dog Days of Summer" are just around the corner, and in a few weeks, I'll be losing several lscp crew workers to college, once again. We'll be down to one solid, 4-man lscp crew, for the Fall months.



After the past 9-10mos of medical problems — systemic chromium/nickle poisoning, alopecia areata, auto-immune system attacking my hearing, and losing 43lbs as a result of them all — I'm now feeling somewhat better and have happily-agreed to chef for long-time friends Jeff & Denise, for a "simple 4-Course Dinner", on Friday evening. If I can get through Friday night's prep menu, presentation and dining, I'll be going back-out on the "Restaurant Safari Tour", with Family and Friends, just like "old times". I truly miss the fine dining I used to enjoy, on a weekly basis, but those unexpected, new medical problems negated my continued participation in those events. We'll see what happens, on Friday. I'll keep you posted.



OMG! At ~7:18pm EST on Wednesday, while listening to The Savage Nation, streaming on my computer, an entire 4-lane Interstate Highway (I-35W) bridge in Minneapolis, MN, collapsed into the Mississippi River, killing unknown dozens/scores/hundreds and trapping yet unknown dozens/scores/hundreds of people in cars, trucks and pedestrians and bridge worlers, which services more than 200,000 cars/trucks/pedestrians per day. Just damn! At least 50 cars/trucks have plunged into the river, as of 9:33pm, it's been reported. It's 9:43pm, right now, and I'm sure the death/injured stats-figures will change dramatically, by tomorrow, as I resume checking this story out, and am going to sleep, right now.



I'm always very self-conscious and very, very 'worried' when I drive over such high bridges, whether it be the Tappanzee, George Washington, Golden Gate, BWI Bridge, various Maryland bridges, etc etc etc bridges, anywhere. I purposely try to to avoid them all, even if it takes a 1-3hrs detour, to get to my destination, BTW. I hate bridges, of all kinds. I just don't trust any of them, BTW. as America's infrastructure is so old and hasn't been kept-up, in the past 40-50 years, as that designated money has been diverted to "pork projects", instead of what it was intended for. The corrupt, criminal US Congress and the states' legislatures are 100% to blame, for all those deaths on Wednesday's MN bridge collapse, IMO.



97°F on Thursday, with 86% humidity, made it a very uncomfortable day, and more of them are coming, the forecast says. We're still in a cyclical 3yr drought pattern, and there's no end-in-sight, it appears. If it's 87°F by 10:30am, then it's going to be a "real stinker", by 2 or 3pm, IIRC. By then, I've already gone through 1-2 clean shirts, sweatted-up and wrinkled, and a couple of hand towels, just to wipe the sweat from my face and hair. I truly despise the Summer months, as well as the brutal Winter months. Spring and Fall are now my favorite months, as I get older and wiser.

Jerrett Loker, 24, was watching the baby girl at a Dover Township, York County, home at 2747 Genna Circle when she was assaulted, according to the child's mother. The child's mother took the infant to Memorial Hospital around 3am, on Friday. The baby was then flown to Hershey Medical Center, where she is being treated at the pediatric unit.
