The 2nd Amendment is the 1st Amendment's ***trigger mechanism***. Retailers' "Black Friday" began a day early, last weekend, and continues as we speak. Hopefully, it will boost retailers bottom line, as they head into the busy Christmas Shopping Season. I noticed shopping centers and malls full of cars, as I drove to Mom & Dad's home, for Thanksgiving Dinner, last Thursday, at 2pm. Unusual for that day, as compared to past years, it's made sense, now that I'm reading the "whys and wherefores", in the media. Go for it, folks.
The GC&N Complex is looking very "desolate" these days, as the retail sales yards are being emptied-out, and all nursery stock is stored in GHs 1-2-3-4-5-6, for the Winter months. Acres and acres of display space, once-laden with rare, unusual and hard-to-find nursery stock — almost 500 varieties of Jap Maples, almost 1,300 varieties of Conifers, 450 varieties of perennials, ornamental grasses and groundcovers, over 1,400 trees and shrubs — are slowly disappearing, into storage. Comments by customers and visitors alike are humorous: "Where is all your stuff, John? Where'd it go?" LOL! It's nice to reduce the inventory prior to Winter, but it's also nicer to get those specific trees and shrubs installed in customers' landscapes, so my customers benefit in the coming years, from the foliage and increasing equity, of the plant material.
I'm still getting emails from people all around the US, offering me "Pickle-replacement kittens", but I'm still declining, for now. Not having the added responsibility of having to go down to the GC&N Complex, each day, to feed and water him/her, is most welcomed. Various flight attendants who fly into this area's airports, have emailed me that they can bring from 1-3 kittens, or 1 cat, to me, when they do their normal route into this Mid-Atlantic Region. I'm soooooooooo tempted, believe me. I miss Pickle, and would like to get another "mouser". Believe me, I would. But having to train, keep watch, train, worry, train, supervise, train, look for if he/she's missing for a day, train, etc etc etc, is actually more than I want to do, just right now. It's kind of nice not to have to go down after a blizzard or ice storm, to feed and water him/her, when I can now wait days to plow-out the GC&N Complex. I've even thought of taking one or both of my condo cats — Murphy or Mama Kitty — down to the GC&N Complex, but as they're really indoor cats, and probably would either a hard time adjusting at their late stages of life, or would get killed trying. To be fair to all of the animals and to myself, I'm holding-off, for now. Maybe I'll find a kitten, which needs rescuing locally, in the Spring. Meanwhile, I'm feeding all of the many thousands of property-nesting birds. Everyday.
I said "goodbye" to the 3 of 4 GC&N Staff, who were laid-off last Friday, with nice Holiday bonuses to boot, until Spring sets-in, and reminded them about coming back to do interim projects under "banked hours", since the layoffs are just temporary and seasonal things, as usual. I hope all will be back, as they're good, valuable employees and I truly wished there was a way to keep them employed during the "off-season", but there just isn't. Without income to support their positions, I can't employ them, anymore. I've explained that to each of them, individually, and I sincerely hope they can ultimately grasp/understand that simple concept. Hopefully. Next week, James, my Landscape Designer, is scheduled to be laid-off, after he finishes a few additional designs he's working on. He *understands* and has taken appropriate steps to replace his current work situation. Smart guy.
I slept-in until around 11:30am on Saturday, and then went down to the GC&N Complex, around 1pm, to get some paperwork and scheduling done, so that the LSCP Crews would have the posted schedule, on Monday, as I wouldn't be coming in on Sunday to do it, and would a bit later than usual, on Monday. We're finally down the homestretch with the last 2 very large jobs of the year, which will help us easily set a new 'gross revenue' record. It was a dry, sunny day in the mid-60s, and I said "hi" to Pickle, as I always do, on my way through the front door. The shopping malls were full, parking spaces were overflowing and local police were directing the onerous, incoming-outgoing traffic. Not for me, BTW. I stopped at 3 different supermarkets — Giant, Weis, Saubels — to get some 9" aluminum pie pans for my condo cats' feeding plates — but everyone was *out-of-stock* on the specific units. No surprise, given that it's Thanksgiving. ha.

Golf carts are in demand, by other than golfers? Sure thing, as I've had one here at the GC&N Complex, custom-painted and equipped to squire 3 customers around the 20-acre property, to see anything they wish, for almost 2 years. It now has a roof for some shade, and a shotgun holder is in the works.
I use 9" aluminum pie pans to feed my two condo cats with, splitting the Fancy Feast® Catfood into two piles; scraping-cleaning one, while loading-up another for their current meal. After Thanksgiving Day, there wasn't a 3-pak of new 9" aluminum pans anywhere in York Cty's supermarkets, to be found, at any price. I stopped at 4-5 supermarkets on both Saturday and Sunday, and the bakery section shelves were *empty*. Can you say *homemade pumpkin pies*? Maybe this coming week they'll re-stock?
Having both Saturday and Sunday off, is something I'm slowly getting used to, these days. With Winter Hours en force, my first urge is still to go into work, only superseded by the urge to sleep until noon. I'm also noticing that my back, shoulder and elbow pain is markedly-decreased, during the "normal" 5-day work week, with just those two days off, and the prodigious use of the heating pad/cold paks. Time will tell.
I've spent several days going through Spring '07's confirmation orders, and have made $50k cuts from Spring '06's deliveries. My horticulturist, Jennifer, and ass't gh mgr, Bob, have had their input and made their changes to the order status, so we're in very good shape for the coming Spring, narrowing-down the "wish lists" to just the choice specimens and needed plant material. The fluff has been eliminated from the line-up. Once again, we'll have so many things available to our retail customers and landscape customers which no one else will have or can imagine.
You might ask, "Why doesn't JS go out more often, and do 'normal things', like other 'normal people'?" Because my face is too well-known in the US, as the author of John's Journal, as opposed to Conservative radio talkers Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage etc, whose 'voices' are very well-known nationwide, and I get tired of being approached for 'political discussion', on my days-off. Back in the days when I travelled, I'd get noticed in airports, hotels, rent-a-car places, restaurants etc, and people would want to discuss/confront/commiserate with me. I like my Conservative Friends, who pal-around with me and do things which don't require me to be the author of "John's Journal", on my days-off. No political crap. I can't go into horticultural competitors' places "incognito", because they also know my face. I tried one of those 'Steve Martin disguises', years ago, but it didn't work; they quickly recognized me. I now have to send-in subordinates or others, who aren't known, to scope-out products, pricing, whatever. Socially, I have the same problem: recognition and confrontation/accommodation, which can be a problem for my date and another couple, if we're out with one. I much prefer to be un-recognized and incognito, but that's a 50-50 proposition, these days, as it has been for the past 10 years (January '96).
Tip jars? Are you offended by them at the cashier's station? Why? It's a great place to unload your pockets' "metal burden", and help-out some of the employees, beyond what you leave at the table, as a tip for service. I've noticed more restaurants and other establishments using them, these days. And no, I don't have a problem with them. I always contribute 'something', if I have some change in my pockets. If not jingling change, I'll fold-up some $5 bills, and drop them into the jars.
Everywhere I go, I see Christmas decorations and hear Christmas music, both in stores, homes, on the radio and the TV. It's just past November's Thanksgiving, IIRC. (((sigh))) Oh, well.
Because of the unbelievable amount of spam and junk email, I've had to purchase a $3/mo filtering service for the new corporate website server, just south of me in New Park, PA. Worth every penny, BTW. I'm averaging 800-1,000 pieces of crap per day, and the filter nabs 99.9% of it. Personally, I think the spammers should be tracked down, and killed; a .45cal shot to the head. Problem solved. Jail and fines are bullshit, as a deterrent to the subhuman filth who send that crap, IMO.
Deer hunting season started on Sunday, and for as long as I can remember in the 16 years I've been living here in York Cty (PA), whole businesses, industries and towns have shut down for the next two weeks, while 900,000+ hunters take to the woods, in search of that "perfectly-pointed buck". No, I don't eat venison, and if I'm not going to eat it, I'm not going to shoot and kill it. Yeah sure, I could *pretend* that the deer is a muslim-islamist-arab terrorist, stalk and kill it, but I can do that with simple, paper targets. I see SUVs, pick-ups and cars parked in fields, indicating that hunters are 'out and about'. And the newly-passed "Deer Hunting Liability Law", makes it tough on landowners (read: liable for the careless actions/accidents of others) for all 'accidents' caused by negligent/careless hunters. Many landowners are not allowing hunters to return to deer-filled, wide-open spaces they've hunted on, for generations. I can't fault them, either. And of course, the lowlife, subhuman, pieces-of-shit from the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, like asswipe Mark Phenicie, a dirtbag lobbyist, are loving a law which criminalizes everyone, and puts blood money in his sleazy, slimy scumbag pockets. Trial lawyers are subhuman garbage, trash and filth, IMO. But that's another Journal.

Compared to last week's 3½" of rain, this has been a dry week, but in some areas which don't drain well, my Landscape Crews are working in a muddy quagmire. (I always wanted to use that word.) We're finally down to the last single large job, and some smaller tree installations, all of which require machinery to move boulders, soil and large trees, so we have to pick-and-choose our days to work within, so no job-site accidents, happen. At least all that rain wasn't snow.
The Plains and Midwest got hammered yesterday, with snow and ice, and it's coming our way today and tonight. Meanwhile, Washington state is still digging out from a heavy snow and ice storm, earlier in the week. Looks like it's going to be a long Winter.
