the First Day of Winter — today, Friday December 22nd — is always exciting for me, even though it's more like extended "Indian Summer", these days. Not only is it the Winter Solstice — the shortest day of the year — it's the official beginning of "The Season of The Long Sleep", for both plants and animals. Religious folk worldwide observe many seasonal days of celebration during the month of December. Most are religious holy days, and are linked in some way to the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. On that day, due to the earth's tilt on its axis, the daytime hours are at a minimum in the Northern hemisphere, and night time is at a maximum. The precise moment of the 2006 solstice will be December 21, 2006 at 7:22 P.M. EST (or, in reality, December 22, at 00:22 UT). Oh well, no matter quibbling about mere minutes or humble hours; it's now here. In the 50s, as a kid, I remember the cold, and deep snow cover until late February or early March, woolen sweaters, long johns, mittens, snowsuits, parkas, boots, snow shovels, bags of sand etc. But those days are long gone. I haven't seen 1-4 months of total snow cover, since the early 60s, and less and less, every year since. No, it's not the so-called, false "global warming" stuff; rather, it's another of Earth's *natural cycles*, which have occurred over millions of years, and will continue occurring, for millions more years. We're finally at the "end of GC&N season" milepost, and all small ($1k-19k+), medium ($20-59k+) and large jobs ($60-100k+) have come to an end, and I'm getting them billed-out and am wrapping-up the associated paperwork. I spent last Thursday and Friday getting the final paychecks done — in Intuit QuickBooks 2006-2007 — and Spring 2007 orders reviewed and changes made — in MS-Excel 2006-2007 — and making a list of GC&N projects for my Landscape Foreman to implement in the remainder of this week, with a few remaining Lscp Crew Chiefs/Workers, next week. The balance of the on-site jobs, can be done in early March/April 2007, just prior to The 17th Open House, On Saturday, April 14th. Depending upon when Spring "arrives", we can get the newly-formed Lscp Crews out early, and easily-facilitate those remaining jobs. Just getting the GC&N Complex "set-up" during and after the arrival of the arriving, 10-15 tractor-trailer loads of fresh nursery stock. But that's another Journal entry.
Yikes! TMI's Reactor Unit #1 shutdown last Wednesday evening, due to a "power glitch" with an off-site power grid, causing the plant's turbine to automatically shut-down. The automatic shutdown is a "safety feature"? Yeah, sure. "Officials at the plant said the reactor was stable at all times and the public was never in danger. The incident sent a burst of steam into the air. It made a loud sound but was harmless, according to officials. This is the second time in less than a month the reactor has automatically shut down. However, the two incidents are not related." Yeah, sure. We got *dosed*, didn't we? And they didn't admit/tell us, did they? Heh. Pass the iodine pills, honey.
Some Winter so far, huh? Upper-40°Fs to the upper-50°Fs? Little rain? Zero snow. Shades of drought, once again. This August 2006 Farmer's Almanac prediction, just might be wrong. Here is the Farmers' Almanac weather for the Northeast US, Dec 2006 & Jan 2007, and it's not even real close. Last Saturday, Sunday and Monday, temps broke 40-50-60 year-old records, with temps rising into the mid- and upper-60°Fs. Whooops; spoke too soon. Temps are back down into the 30s and 40s, on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I doubt we're going to be seeing any snow for a while. Hopefully, nothing like this mess in the Midwest.

The first one of my exchange-replacement, 100% Wool Board Shirts (Watermelon Beach Boys) from Pendleton USA arrived on Friday, and it fit perfectly. The 3 originally-ordered shirts were "XL Reg"; the exchanges are "XXL-Long". Go figure. However, only 2 of the 3 are available now, as Christmas sales have depleted their inventory. So after the 2nd exchange shirt arrives, and it fits as the first replacement/exchange did, I'll just wait until Jan-Feb-Mar to order another 1-2 of those beauties. At just $88.00each, they'll last for many years, as my Timberline 75% Wool/25% Nylon Shirts have done. As I mentioned previously, there is a major *uniform-size-fit* crisis in clothing manufacturing, USA- and world-wide. I find it in coats, jeans, shoes, boots and many other clothing items. No, this isn't a problem for the US Gov't to fix — they nearly always make it worse — but rather for the clothing industry to address and fix, itself. Why do I need a "XXL Long"? Concealed carry, of course.
I slept-in on Saturday and Sunday, until around 12noon, had a leisurely Eggs Benedict brunch, oj, coffee, and went out to do some errands which I'd let go all week, and regretted it, as the 'holiday traffic' was un-fricking-believable. One week before Christmas, and it was bumper-to-bumper madness. I spent more time waiting in traffic lines, with thousands of other cars, than I did driving to where I needed to go. Yeah, yeah, I should have known, as it's been this way for the past 16 years, but is easily-getting worse with each successive year. Gaaaawd, what a mess! The Galleria Mall's hundred-fifty acre parking lot was 'overflowing', as was every other mall, shopping center and business district's parking lot. I honestly don't know how all those people do it, each Holiday Season. It seemed that every 5th or 6th car/truck had a cut-Christmas Tree on its roof, ready to go back home and be decorated. Back seats filled with packages and bags. Parents with bugged-out eyes, glad to be 'almost finished' (heh; they've never finished!) with the day-from-hell-of-Christmas-shopping. "Bah, Humbug on the traffic!"

No, I won't be 'bracing for wage hikes', when the new minimum wage law goes into effect. I pay well-over the new minimum wage of $7.25/hr (over two years from the current $5.15/hr), for starting, legally-accepted-employees, except for the under-17 year-old kids, who want to work on a limited, permitted-basis, from their high schools, and from the Pennsylvania Dept of Labor/Industry. They come in at minimum wage, simply for the work experience, under PA State Laws. When they get to the legal age of 18, and have the proper work experience, then they're eligible for some 'real wages'. Unfortunately, those American Kids are in the very minimum; the vast majority who will benefit from raising the minimum wage, will be the criminal, illegal, alien workers, with Mexicans in the vast majority.
