If You Think All Great Collections
of Rare, Unusual & Hard-To-Find Plants
Are At Botannic Gardens
Or In Elegant Conservatories,
You're Partly Right.
We Have Most Of The Rest.

our Collector's Rare Plant Nursery has been supplying thousands of gardening enthusiasts for over seven years, and is a must for connoisseurs and serious collectors. We buy-in plants from all over the world, suitable for our USDA Zone 6b, and offer them to you for collections and centerpieces in your Planted Garden.

In fact, we continue to supply many of the horticultural aristocracy with rare, unusual and hard-to-find plants that no one else they've contacted even has the special catalogs to research and find them in. Our plants are on-site and in our lush Display Gardens.

Something new & very special: Alpine Trough Gardens. We make and plant authentic replicas of the 17th & 18th century miniature Alpine Trough Gardens. These are exact replicas of the great Trough Gardens of Asia and Europe, owned, jealously guarded and preserved by that period's aristocracy. In fact, our own Alpine Trough Gardens won 1st Place-Outstanding Display at the 3rd Annual York Flower & Garden Show in February and Best Of Show at The 44th Shrewsbury Flower Show in August. No one else makes and plants them the way we do. No one else even has them.

First, a bit of history on the origin of Rock Gardening.

Miniature rock gardens constructed in hand-hewn troughs or on rock slabs were first developed over one thousand years ago in Asia and then brought to England in the 1820's and 1830's. This very specialized form of container gardening presents several attractions: it allows those with limited space to grow some of the most intriguing plants anywhere in cultivation; and even for those not constrained by space, it allows for both better visual presentation of the plants and for more successful cultivation of difficult species and varieties.

The cultivation of Alpine Plants in Trough and rock gardens is one of the most satisfying pursuits in the world of gardening. The plants themselves, tough little jewels of the plant kingdom, are endlessly fascinating in their variety. And the creation of a rock garden allows you to imitate Nature's interplay of rock, soil and plant. Those who cultivate these miniatures are truly special gardeners; the elite aristocrats of all gardeners.

Over 106 new varieties are now available, ranging from Androsace to Trillium, some in very limited quantities due primarily to their earthly rarity. Combined with our current 75 cultivars of rare and unusual miniature conifers, Alpine Trough Gardens, Rockeries and Scree Gardens are now an easy reality for anyone. Another of the many firsts by this Garden Center & Nursery.

We now offer these very special and rare plants to you from Oregon, Montana and Washington State for your own Planted Gardens with the knowledge and foresight that you will use them wisely. Other expert gardeners will marvel at your skill in acquiring and growing these rare gems. Their inherent beauty and diversity will stun everyone who sees them in your garden. They’re so spectacular and unusual.

Specifically, Alpine Plants are miniature (under 1ft even when mature), due mostly to their original harsh, mountainous (Alps and Himalayas) environments keeping them naturally-stunted, in order to maintain precarious life. In cultivation, they grow only 2-3% larger. Many of the miniature conifers and deciduous plants we sell are 10-plus years old, and have proven to be easily hardy to Zone 2 (Northern Canada). So there's no problem growing them in this area.

Now you can have instant effect and immediate gratification, in a truly unusual, replica Trough Garden. Simply buy the individual pieces, design the tiny landscape and install them yourself according to established cultural practices, or purchase an already assembled micro-landscape just looking for a permanent home on your deck, patio or pool area. We do special custom pieces for connoisseurs and serious collectors.

On the West Coast, where planted Trough Gardens are all the rage and very expensive items (selling unplanted for $500-$1,000), gardeners now get together and have “Trough-Casting Parties” and a week or so later, a follow-up “Trough-Planting Party”. Elegant ideas, to be sure.

These are just some of the things that the Gardening Elite enjoy and it's time you joined the fun, too. Get your order in for one now, while they’re still affordable.
