by 2008, America was politically split nearly 50/50 as it had been in 2000 and 2004. The Democrats took a gamble and nominated Barack Obama, who became the first young, Northern, liberal president since John F. Kennedy narrowly won in 1960.
Democrats had believed that the unique racial heritage, youth and rhetorical skills of Obama would help him avoid the fate of previous failed Northern liberal candidates Hubert Humphrey, George McGovern, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis and John Kerry. Given 21st-century demography, Democrats rejected the conventional wisdom that only a conservative Democrat with a Southern accent could win the popular vote (e.g., Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Al Gore).
Moreover, Obama mostly ran on pretty normal Democratic policies rather than a hard-left agenda. His platform included opposition to gay marriage, promises to balance the budget and a bipartisan foreign policy.
Instead, what followed was a veritable "hope and change" revolution not seen since the 1930s. Obama pursued a staunchly progressive agenda – one that went well beyond the relatively centrist policies upon which he had campaigned. The media cheered and signed on.
Soon, the border effectively was left open. Pen-and-phone executive orders offered immigrant amnesties. The Senate was bypassed on a treaty with Iran and an intervention in Libya.
Political correctness under the Obama administration led to euphemisms that no longer reflected reality.
Poorly conceived reset policy with Russia and a pivot to Asia both failed. The Middle East was aflame.
The Iran deal was sold through an echo chamber of deliberate misrepresentations.
The national debt nearly doubled during Obama's two terms. Overregulation, higher taxes, near-zero interest rates and the scapegoating of big businesses slowed economic recovery. Economic growth never reached 3 percent in any year of the Obama presidency – the first time that had happened since Herbert Hoover's presidency.
A revolutionary federal absorption of health care failed to fulfill Obama's promises and soon proved unviable.
Culturally, the iconic symbols of the Obama revolution were the "you didn't build that" approach to businesses and an assumption that race/class/gender would forever drive American politics, favorably so for the Democrats.
Then, Hillary Clinton's unexpected defeat and the election of outsider Donald Trump sealed the fate of the Obama Revolution.
For all the hysteria over the bluntness of the mercurial Trump, his agenda marks a return to what used to be seen as fairly normal, as the U.S. goes from hard left back to the populist center.
Trump promises not just to reverse almost immediately all of Obama's policies, but to do so in a pragmatic fashion that does not seem to be guided by any orthodox or consistently conservative ideology.
Trade deals and jobs are Trump's obsessions – mostly for the benefit of blue-collar America.
He calls for full-bore gas and oil development, a common culture in lieu of identity politics, secure borders, deregulation, tax reform, a Jacksonian foreign policy, nationalist trade deals in places of globalization, and traditionalist values.
In normal times, Trumpism – again, the agenda as opposed to Trump the person – might be old hat. But after the last eight years, his correction has enraged millions.
Yet securing national borders seems pretty orthodox. In an age of anti-Western terrorism, placing temporary holds on would-be immigrants from war-torn zones until they can be vetted is hardly radical. Expecting "sanctuary cities" to follow federal laws rather than embrace the nullification strategies of the secessionist Old Confederacy is a return to the laws of the Constitution.
Using the term "radical Islamic terror" in place of "workplace violence" or "man-caused disasters" is sensible, not subversive.
Insisting that NATO members meet their long-ignored defense-spending obligations is not provocative but overdue. Assuming that both the European Union and the United Nations are imploding is empirical, not unhinged.
Questioning the secret side agreements of the Iran deal or failed Russian reset is facing reality. Making the Environmental Protection Agency follow laws rather than make laws is the way it always was supposed to be.
Unapologetically siding with Israel, the only free and democratic country in the Middle East, used to be standard U.S. policy until Obama was elected.
Issuing executive orders has not been seen as revolutionary for the past few years – until now.
Expecting the media to report the news rather than massage it to fit progressive agendas makes sense. In the past, proclaiming the Obama a "sort of god" or the smartest man ever to enter the presidency was not normal journalistic practice.
Freezing federal hiring, clamping down on lobbyists and auditing big bureaucracies – after the Obama-era IRS, VA, GSA, EPA, State Department and Secret Service scandals – are overdue.
Half the country is having a hard time adjusting to Trumpism, confusing Trump's often unorthodox and grating style with his otherwise practical and mostly centrist agenda.
In sum, Trump seems a revolutionary, but that is only because he is loudly undoing a revolution.

A Day In The Life
Up at 5:30am on Friday, from a nice, peaceful sleep, I was thinking about today's meeting at the realtor's offices, and the fact that I wouldn't be taking my attorney along. It was 24°F outside, and down to 70°F inside the condo, so I fired-up he furnace to 76°F, had some OJ and made coffee. I spent the next 2hrs+ going thru every paragraph, line and word of last November's failed contract, and making changes/corrections. I put a call into the realtor, and she finally called back to assure me that it was a preliminary contract mtg, and there would be time for each party's legal beagles to look over the contract before a final signing and that the meeting was moved back to 1:00pm. Uh-oh, there's now a forecasted major storm for next Mon-Wed, but I'm okay. I might get out to Weis Market over the weekend to get a few things.
My computer's problem seems to have "fixed itself". The "missing" HDs and external HDs reappeared and all is well, once again. Apparently, the WS-FTP Pro program I used last evening, caused the glitch, and when I reused it, it fixed itself, I guess. I can't offer any other explanation for what happened.
I streamed the Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12, and left for the meeting, at the nearby Bennett-Williams Commercial offices. After 2½-hours, the results were another bust: financing not lined-up as they promised, and they still want me to "carry paper" ($150,000 deposit w/ $200,000 mortgage) for 2 years. DAMN! The prospective buyers were supposed to have their financing all lined-up and be ready-to-go, but I kept my cool, instead of blowing my top. No sense in burning bridges with the buyers or realtors.
I was definitely sliding into a deep, dark funk, after that meeting.
I was hungry on the way home, and stopped at FIVE GUYS and got too much food to go. Big mistake. And when I got home, I ate too much, and was feeling a little sick. So I decided to sleep on the LR couch for the night. After watching the new offerings from Gold Rush and American Pickers, Season 15, I crashed at 11. Lights out.
Awake and up a couple of times during the night, I managed to get back to sleep until 7:30am on Saturday. After some OJ and fresh coffee, I felt better. 10°F outside, and I'd left the furnace at 76°F overnight, so it was keeping things warm. I don't sleep well on the couch, and would be very tired all day. I tried calling Dad several times to let him know what happened at the realtor's meeting yesterday, but got a "mailbox full... CLICK" recording, all morning.
At 2pm, I drove over to Dad's, worked on the 3 AT&T portable phones, and got the base unit cleared out, but the 2 handsets wouldn't cooperate. After well over an hour, I was getting frustrated, and nowhere with the non-responsive menus... the instruction booklet didn't cover such contingencies. So I decided to gather-up the 3 phones and their bases, and take them and Dad to the local AT&T Store, just a few miles away, to see if their tech whizzes could fix it, on Monday. If need be, we'll just get some new phones.
By late-afternoon, I drove home, watched a few episodes of "Gold Rush", the new episode of Detroit Steel and called it a day at 10:30.
I slept-in until 10 on Sunday morning, turned-up the heat, started the coffee, had some V8, a banana, and checked the weather and news. As usual. I had two loads of laundry to get done, condo chores and an errand to do. After a shave, I grabbed a shower, and left for the errand. Back by 3, I realized that the Stupor Bowl wasn't on until 6:30, so I streamed Friday's missed Chris Plante Show WMAL/DC 3hr Podcast, until it started. The Patriots beat the Falcons won Super Bowl LI (60) 34-28, in OT, after being down 25-3 first half and into third quarter. No, I skipped the halftime show BS. Most amazing comeback football game I've ever seen; no ifs, ands or buts. 🏈
Next on Fox was a spin-off of "24", called 24: Legacy, 12:00 - 1:00, until 11:00, and bagged it for the night.
Up at 8:30 on Monday morning, a sunny but cold 29°F day, I upped the heat, made coffee, had some OJ and a banana, and scanned the weather and news. The Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12, was streaming live, so I clicked it on. I had some Chicken Noodle Soup w/ Saltines for lunch, and listened to Rush until 3. There was mail to go thru, sorting and filing anything pertinent for 2016's taxes, which I'll start on this weekend, and some checks to write. By 6pm, the FBN (Fox Business Network) evening news was on, with Fox's 24: Legacy, 1:00 - 2:00, which wasn't very good (hilarious review), but I watched anyway from 9-10pm. Tired, I quit at 10:30, for the night.
Awake at 6:30am on a rainy, warm 54°F Tuesday, trying to remember a dream, I made coffee, had the requisite OJ, and checked the weather and news. I had a short-list of stuff to do: pick-up my spare desktop computer from Spartan, pick-up Becky's 3 old, Uniden portable phones, and take them to Dad's to switch-out with his 3 problematic AT&T phones. What I didn't count on was the 3 Lithium-Ion batteries needing 15-20hrs of charging before usage. So I plugged-in the 3 units into a few of his kitchen counter outlets, made him a crabcake for lunch, and will have to come back in the morning to do the swap.
Home by 2pm, I noticed a *Winter Storm Watch* posted, and replayed the morning's missed Chris Plante Show WMAL/DC 3hr Podcast, caught the early news and weather; looks like we're getting some snow Wednesday evening thru Thursday morning. That changes my plans to drive south to Stewartstown in the morning, to either in the afternoon, or wait until the next morning. I watched a few episodes of "Curse of Oak Island" and "Killing Fields", and quit for the night at 11.
Up at 6, after being "rudely awakened by Señor Montezuma" 4x during the night, I made coffee, had some OJ and checked the weather. 58°F and almost Spring-like, but it wouldn't last long. A ***WINTER STORM WARNING*** was posted for the region, with the York area threatened by 5-9" of snow. Crap; I had things I needed to do. I drove over to Dad's, took the 3 batteries out of his house phones, went to Batteries & Bulbs in West York, got new ones, refitted them to his new Uniden phones, and gave them 15-20hrs to fully-charge overnight. My 4 Rxs wouldn't be ready at Rite Aid in Stewartstown, until tomorrow, but if we get as much snow as predicted, travel will be dicey until Friday. I stopped at the local convenience store, to get some milk, bread, eggs and Marlboros.
Wednesday is a usual "NBS" (Nothing But Shit) day/night for TV, so I watched Fox Business News channel, then switched over to the Velocity channel for the evening, and bagged it at 11, expecting to see a slight coating of snow, despite all the dire predictions from the weather idiots.
Awake at 7:30 on Thursday morning, I was surprised to see 3-5" of snow, from Winter Storm Niko – when-the-hell did we start naming Winter Storms? – and still more coming down, as the bulk and worst of the storm was almost out of this area, and headed east. 29°F and snow sticking to everything, but was slowly melting on the hard surfaces. Heat up, coffee brewing, OJ tasting good and some French Toast to celebrate the snowfall. I decided to work on the last of the pile of mail (mostly circulars and junk, as it turns out), and stay off the local roads until all the fender benders were cleared, and off the interstates until the overturned semis were also cleared and miles long back-ups, gone from the local Traffax Report.
I streamed the live Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12, and then listened to Rush until 3, while reviewing my MediCare Plan, thru Geisinger, to see if I needed to make any changes; I don't. I set it up right the first time, two years ago. By 6:30, the Fox Business News channel was on CATV, and I watched until 9; then switched over to Velocity channel until 11:45pm. My Friday "to do list" was ready, had some bills to mail. Lights out at midnight.
Tomorrow/Friday starts a new week here in the "Journal", and I'm in my 10th week of weight loss (265-lbs => 202-lbs = 63lbs), and feeling darn good, but i want to get back down to my previous 190lbs good weight of 2011-12-13, and my existing old clothing options suddenly become unlimited. I can add-back the atrophied muscle pretty quickly by a simple diet change. I need to get some lab work done for my PCP (Primary Care Physician), for an upcoming appointment in April. Can do. I need to begin work on my and Dad;s 2016 Incomes Taxes, for a late March CPA Meeting with out long-time Family Personal and 23yr GC&N Business, and some of my new ventures. After getting Dad's phone system up-and-running, I start this weekend. Only a couple of meetings with my 2 investor friends, and I'm done. Should be a busy week. Or not.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?
Am I the only one missing something?

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
