As we in the Mid-Atlantic Region are still enjoying temps in the upper-40s/low-50s, the Midwest and Southwest were getting hammered by another ice storm, similar to what they got nailed with on December 30th, and from which many thousands still have no power. California's getting an inland valley ice storm, too, and it could make tree-grown fruit/produce much more expensive in the Spring. Looks like there'll be a glut of orange juice on the market, and not many California eating oranges; ditto other citrus, avocados and strawberries. Orange juice will be plentiful in the coming months. Thank you so mucho, El Niño! All we got were 3 days of rain; they got the ice. Here's a video of Springfield, MO's ice storm, aftermath. Yikes! I've been through several of these in the past 17 years here in Penna, and the damage is unbelieveably devastating and widespread. 27  36  41  55  60 65 dead from it, so far. Sad. Deadly, "black ice" in LA? And yet, still more snow in LA? Holy crappola! Global Warming? I don't freaking think so!
Looks like we dodged another 'weather bullet'. The massive ice/snow storm moved over top of the Mid-Atlantic Region, and up into New England, and all we got was lots of rain. No complaints.
I slept-in on both Saturday and Sunday, had a leisurely brunch around 11am, and ran numerous errands from my considerable list of "Things To Do". Cloudy, rainy and warm/cold; are most conducive to my sleeping late, IMO. I needed to go down to Graul's in May's Chapel, MD, (Exit #17 on I-83 South) but on weekends the traffic on I-83 is a horrorshow, and I decided to wait for next week, when the traffic isn't as bad. Forget Wegman's, in Hunt Valley, MD, on the weekends. On rainy Sunday, temps were in the upper-50s and the fog was so dense, I could hardly see 100yds, so I limited my driving to local errands, and stayed away from the interstates. By mid-afternoon, the fog had dissipated, due to the rains, but I stayed-off the roads, anyway. It was 56°:F on Sunday, January 14th, and I had the AC on in the condo!

I took my 2002 Silver Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo into the local Chrysler-Jeep dealer, to have the catalytic converter replaced ($850; but covered under 5-yr warranty) early on Tuesday morning, and they gave me a 2007 Jeep Compass, as a loaner car, until mine was fixed, some 2-3hrs later. (Sitting around a car dealership, in a waiting room, isn't my idea of a productive day.) That car was the biggest piece of crap I've ever driven: ugly, no ashtray, no lighter, terrible road noise in the car's cabin, lousy ride and handling, plastic everywhere... very, very unimpressive. I just can't imagine anyone voluntarily purchasing one of those things. I guess I'm just spoiled by the luxury of the Grand Cherokee, having had a both 1998 and 1994 Grand Cherokee LTD, before the current one.
These amazing and brutal, -20°F and -10°F temps pouring into the Nation's north and midsection, right on the heels of those deadly ice storms? Yikes! Now that's damned cold! I can't remember even being in any temps that low, within the past 35-40 years, since I moved from Niagara Falls/Buffalo, back in the early 70s. As Tuesday progressed, temps dropped from the mid-40s down into the 30s and 20s, with teens at night.
How about sending a note/card/letter to one of our brave, heroic US Military Troops? I've sent several.
Not being afflicted with any bodily ailments, I can easily-float, readily-finesse and finally-enjoy my waning years. Since there are more years "behind me than in front of me", I will do all I'm able to do, to enjoy the remaining rest of my years. Unfortunately, for those afflicted/affected with physical problems, it becomes more of a chore, than a labor of love. At 57, I hope I have some quality good time(s), ahead. We'll soon see, in due time, won't we?
On Wednesday, at only 17°F, with a windchill of 9°F, and after opening-up the Main Building where my Office is located, it was so cold inside the GC&N Complex Office and Main Building, that I quickly fired-up the propane heaters, and went back outside and sat inside my idling Jeep, until the buildings heated-up, which took about 15mins. I even had the small electric space heater running behind my desk, "longjohns" on, and I was 'warm and toasty' for most of the day. Brrrrrrr, I sure pity all those poor folks and animals out in the Midwest and Southwest, who have been/are still without any power, food and heat, for 6-7+ days since the ice storms first hit them. They have -20°F and worse temps to deal with. We're having a comparative 'cakewalk', here, IMO. Everything into proper perpective.

On Thursday morning, I was checking www.weather.com's site, and noticed that we have a real nor'easter coming up the coast! Luckily for the York-Lancaster area, the storm will be far enough out to sea, that all we, New Joisey, NYC will get is some flurries and light rain, while New England might get some real 3-5" of snow accumulation. Heh; better them than us.
By Thursday evening, as I was posting this Journal entry to my server, I noticed that all the nasty nor'easter weather had moved significantly east of us, and was moving-up to New England, and that we'd dodged another 'weather bullet', here in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Looks like the ski resort whiners in the Northeast Region, were getting what they'd wanted, whined and wished for. Good for them!

Did you happen to see the Season Premiere of "24" on Sunday and Monday evenings, from 8-10pm EST, on both evenings? I did, and they were damned good shows! And then do what they want to later politically or any other way. I want to be able to go out and work and make a decent wage and buy a home. Half the people that are listening to me right now can’t even afford to buy a house unless they’re working three jobs. And I want America to be America. All of those opportunities, all of those things that made her great, I want those returned to the forefront. If you want to come to this country we welcome you with open arms. We simply ask that you abide by our laws. I don’t want you to snub your nose at our laws, then take advantage of our opportunities, and then cling to the constitution most of which you can’t even read because you don’t speak the language. I want us to secure our borders because the country is worth securing. The people that live here are worth protecting. I want my country back. I want my children back.

An Orlando woman was arrested on felony child abuse charges Monday after she put her baby in an oven and left her apartment, according to Orlando police.
