Face it: America elected a hard-left socialist, Marxist, liberal-demokkkRAT, and we're going to pay the awful price for at least the next 4, or more, years. Present Barry Hussein Obama-Osama-Lama-Ding-Dong's march from pre-election "centrist" to hard-left liberal, was a known act. It was a charade which fooled millions into voting for him. Many of us easily saw through it, and warned others, but to no avail. I did so in these pages, on numerous occasions.
Congress is moving forward with an economic stimulus plan spending package that will swell this fiscal years deficit to roughly $2 trillion, or an astounding 13% of GDP. Originally, it was $650 Billion, then $750 Billion and now it's a "final" $825 Billion. So they say. In reality, it'll be well over a TRILLION DOLLARS — the interest alone will be $200 Billion by the 2020 pay-back date — when it's all said and done. That's a number I have a hard time getting my arms around. (So's a Billion, but who's counting, right now?) Okay, in $20 bills, a TRILLION dollar stack would be 3,150 miles high. That's the distance between DC and Peru. To give $1 TRILLION DOLLARS a little perspective, if you have a stack of $1,000 bills just four inches high, you're a millionaire. A TRILLION DOLLAR stack of $1,000 bills would be 63 miles high. That help any? Me neither. It's all those pesky zeros — $1,000,000,000,000 — throwing me off.
Here's a breakdown, by the numbers, of where it goes and who gets it. There's also $6 billion in there for "internet access in rural areas". WTF? Hey, I'm sorry to be such a hate monger, but if you want internet access, pay for it yourself! Otherwise, do without access, dammit! Less than half of the TRILLION dollar stimulus spending package would be spent/pumped into the economy, for 2011. So what's the urgency? This timetable is from the CBO, the congressional business office. The government is going to spend $26 billion of the $825 billion, this year. $110 billion of it will be spent in 2010, $103 billion will be spent in 2011, $53 billion will be spent in 2012 and the remaining $63 billion between 2013 and 2019. This isn't a stimulus package by any stretch of anyone with a rational brain's imagination; it's precisely a s-p-e-n-d-i-n-g package.
"$6 Billion for high-speed, broadband internet access for rural areas? WTF? Since when did internet access become a *right*? If you want it, pay for it yourself! I guess that makes me a hate-monger?"This is a pure-and-simple government takeover of the American health care system and industry, the banking and financial industries, the automobile industry — they already own the US airline industry; remember they bought it right after 9-11 — and the energy/renewable energy industries. The socialists are moving here, at near-warp speed, in case you've lost track of things, to get as much done while they control both houses of the US Congress and the White House. This opportune time, aka "perfect storm", will probably be lost to them after the 2010 mid-term elections, because they're most likely going to lost control of congress again, for who knows how long.
This bogus pork spending package (bill) spends $12 on new cars for the federal government, for every $1 in tax relief to small businesses. Instead of doing what has worked — tax cuts — to quickly end recessions and bring the economy back online through a re-energized private business sector, with individuals investing in new and ongoing businesses, the lib-dem idiots are going to raise taxes on those people with the wealth to create jobs, and give welfare checks/rebates ("tax cuts" in their bullshit socialist lingo) to 95% of the people who don't even pay taxes. Those billions effectively are flushed down the toilet, without ever helping the economy, long-term, as tax cuts and jobs creation would have, in the hands of businessmen, like myself. But those millions of people, living paycheck-to-paycheck, will be ever-so-grateful to Present Obama's socialists for the temporary infusion of cash, and possibly become demokkkRATs, in the long term. It's called the "blue wall". The liberal-demokkkRAT "leadership" truly think that "Food Stamps Will Stimulate the Economy More than Tax Cuts". Pelosi's words, not mine. These people are not as dumb as rocks in a box, as they go about building their "blue wall".
A little-discussed provision in Present Obama's Pork economic stimulus plan Spending Bill package would demand that every American submit to a government program for electronic medical records without a choice to opt out, and it has privacy advocates more than a little alarmed. Surprised? Don't be; there's several more surprises in the "Obama Pork Spending Bill 2009".

Let's see, it's 12¢ per every $1.00, for real economic stimulus; the rest is pure and simple, plain old lib-dem ***pork***. And there's $5.9 Billion for the lowlife dirtbag, liberal-demokkkRAT criminals at ACORN; $335 million for STD prevention; $650 million for consumers' home digital tv conversion coupons; $6 billion for colleges/universities (many which have billion dollar endowments); $166 billion in direct aid to states (many of which have failed to budget wisely); $50 million in funding for the National Endowment of the Arts; $44 million for repairs to US Department of Agriculture headquarters; $200 million for the National Mall, including grass planting and another $21 million for re-sodding; $400 million for "National Treasures"; $600 million for new gov't "green cars" to replace the 2008 fleet. Present Obama has said that his proposed stimulus legislation will create or save three million jobs. This means that this legislation will spend about $275,000 per job. The average household income in the US is only $50,000/ year. Also in that spending package, is a disguised provision for illegal aliens working in the US to get Unemployment Compensation and Social Security, neither of which they are eligible for. Nice, huh?
Let me offer "John's Economic Stimulus Plan", Mr Present Obama. I guarantee that this plan would stimulate the US Economy within 6 months, beyond anyone's wildest belief. It's simple and basic to what needs to be done. Ready? Here we go:
Reduce the corporate tax rate for all businesses to 17.5%, from 35%, the highest tax rate in the Industrialized World. Cut it in half, and watch what small business owners, like myself, would do with all that extra money, to improve, build and expand our businesses. Tens-of-millions of people would be hired, go back to work, get off the unemployment compensation rolls, and become productive again. Tax rate reductions work; rebates don't. FACT!
Cut the capital gains tax to 0% on all profits, for just 6 months. The Nation's economy would *explode* once again, with all the extra available cash which individuals and business owners would have at their disposal. Millions of old and new investors would pour back into the stock market, which would cause it to rise 300+ pts every day. I'd bet $10,000 that it would break 25,000 in >2 months. Tax rate reductions work; rebates don't. FACT!
Cut the tax rates on all individuals, by 10%. Let people keep more of the money they earn, instead of taxing them and then sending "rebate checks" back out to them. Reduce wasteful gov't spending by ending worthless programs, which don't work. Improve the incentives that drive economic activity, and that means reducing tax rates on work, saving, investment, risk taking, and entrepreneurial activity. These will work; wasteful spending doesn't.
Also critical will be addressing the housing crisis. The real-estate market is paralyzed as potential buyers wait on the sidelines for prices to find their bottom. In order to encourage responsible buyers to enter the market and stabilize prices, give them a one-time, $7,500 home-buyer’s credit for only those buyers who can make a minimum 20% down-payment. As home prices stabilize, complex securities tied to mortgages can also finally find a level that clears the market.
Since only $26 Billion of the $825 Billion is going to be spent this year, with the remaining $799 Billion to be spent from 2010 - 2019, which will essentially do nothing for the immediate lift this economy needs, it is a massive waste of our hard-earned tax dollars. My "John's Economic Stimulus Plan" will accomplish a dramatic economic turn-around THIS YEAR! The liberal-demokkkRATs are afraid of me and my plan, as it would work immediately. 59% of the American Voters worry that Congress and Present Obama will increase government spending too much in the next year or two, while over 70% don't trust either of them.
I used to; I don't now, and I never will again.
POST NOTE: At 6:17pm on Wednesday, January 28th, the lib-dem-controlled US House passed "The Obama Stimulus Bill", 244-188, with not one Republican or Conservative voting for it, and with 11 Conservative Democrats joining them in voting "NO!". The US Senate vote is next. There are a dozen treasonous, lowlife, dirtbag RINOs (Republican In Name Only) in that "august body" (of pompous assholes), and they will vote with the lib-dem, socialist-commie traitors. Count on it!

Thursday and Friday felt like some of those "balmy days of early Spring", with temps in the upper-40s, and it even "smelled like early April" outside: crisp and fresh. Temps quickly went back into Winter mode on Saturday morning, as they dropped into the mid-30°Fs range. We even had a 35 minute "mini-blizzard" with 1" of snow, around 10:30am, but by 2:30pm it had melted. Sure was pretty for a while. I did some filing of my 2008 landscape files, swept the Main Retail Bldg, solved a printer problem, changed 2 burned-out light bulbs on the outside door lights, emptied garbage — more "boss stuff", which is easier to do when there are no phone calls, employees or customers to distract me. Plus, got a small mountain of paperwork underway, which'll easily take me into the next week. On the way home, I noticed that the Jeep's ambient air temp thermometer read 21°F; it had dropped 14°F since that snowstorm moved through a few hours earlier. More very cold weather coming.
While I continue reading/monitoring many local (York, PA) companies who've gone out of business, or who've laid-off employees, the national companies are "laying-off 10x the jobs", that we are, locally. It isn't even close, BTW. Damn; "we aren't even close to the bottom of this Recession, yet". Not even close. John Deere Co, Sprint, CAT, Home Depot etc, to name a very few just for this week. They're falling like "gangbusters".
In just the last 2 days, gas prices at the pump have risen 10¢. Unleaded Regular (87oct) is now at $1.85/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $1.95/gal, and Unleaded Super Premium (92oct) is now at $2.15/gal, with Diesel still staying the same, at $2.55/gal. OPEC's cut of 2mm bbl/day, is now having some seriously-felt effect, as is the few remaining US refineries' changeover from gas to home heating oil, and from Summer to Winter gas blends, on the Left Coast.
Oh crap, all of my primary weather sites — AccuWeather, Weather Underground, Intellicast & The Weather Channel — are predicting 4-8"-plus for our area, this Monday through Wednesday morning, as a large storm moves up from the southwest, through and makes a mess of things. 4-8" isn't bad; it's the "plus" that worries me. A *Winter Storm Watch* is posted on all sites; hoo-rah! The first 3-4 Winter Storms just grazed us, and all we got was rain/freezing rain/sleet/light snow, but "I have a feeling we're going to get hammered" by this one. Heh.
I was up at 4:30am on Tuesday, to feed the cats, check the weather and news, saw an easy 1" of snow outside already, and went back to sleep until 7:30am. By then, there was another 1" down. Checking the radar maps, it looked as though the worst of the storm was well south of us, but we were getting hit with what would amount to 4-5". West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, DC, North Carolina etc would get the brunt of it. Okay by me. I dug out some heavy gloves, the parka, a scarf, wool sock cap, hooded sweatshirt, my LLBean 10" Insulated Maine Hunting Boots — serious snow gear! The ride into work was uneventful, except for seeing a few "fender benders", since the snowplows/salting trucks were out earlier, and the roads were in good shape. Just dumbassed drivers doing damage (how's that for alliteration?). I'd called Arthur in to work some extra hours, and he plowed the GC&N's driveways and parking lot, in >3hrs. With sleet/freezing rain/ice coming on top of this and other layers of snow, it's going to get real ugly on Wednesday, when I come back down to re-plow the place. It stopped snowing around 12noon, and I left at 3pm.
Back at the condo by 4pm, after a stop to p/u dry cleaning, I'd settled-in, fed the cats, lit a fire, and was working on some graphics files for my corporate website, when the snow began again, in earnest. Within 2hrs, we had another 2" on top of the morning's snowfall. By 11pm, there was another 2" added off&on, to the pile. (I have a "weather station" right outside the front door, so measurements of all kinds are easy.) Then, the sleet and ice started around 4:30am, as I was up checking the weather sites, and feeding the condo cats. Back to sleep. Lee called at 6:45 to tell me about all school districts and businesses being closed, power outages, and how bad the ice was outside. He was going down to my Center to plow the ice, later in the morning. I decided to stay home for the day; nothing pressing at work and I didn't need an accident to ruin my day. I lit a fire, made a grilled cheese sandwich & tomato soup for lunch, played Vivaldi and relaxed.
Around 4pm, I went out to the local Rutter's Store, for some Marlboros and OJ, just 1½ miles away. The slush was 4-5" deep on my condo's side street, but all the main roads were clear. It was starting to re-freeze, by 4:30pm, as dark was rapidly setting-in, especially with the heavy cloud cover. I called it an 'early night', since I had a lot of ice to deal with at work, in the morning.
On the Thursday morning ride into work, I was amazed at how all the homes, cars, lawns, meadows, farm fields etc, were encrusted in so much ice. There was at least ¾" of it, just covering everything. Sunglasses were mandatory, due to the unusually-high glare with the morning's bright sun. I shoveled the front steps and GHs1-2-3-4, did some "clean-up plowing" and spread calcium chloride (CaCl) snow-melt. I have a Friday 11am meeting with one of my nursery stock broker reps, to review the Spring Orders for several nurseries' products he sells, and get the delivery schedules set-up for early April, prior to the Sat, April 18th Open House (19th Anniversary!).
I'm itching to get back to work, though uncertain of what work lies ahead. By now, as has been the case over the past 18-of-19 years, we'd already have 12-15 *confirmed* LSCP jobs "on the books", waiting for us; we've got 3, as of tomorrow. We'd also have 8-10 *confirmed* LSCP Maintenance jobs lined-up; we've got 3 in the "yes column", right now. I think many people, and even our high-end customers, are waiting & watching, to see what happens once the economy "bottoms-out", which it hasn't as of right now. It has to stop declining/bottom-out, before it can rebound/climb. With over 550,000 more jobs lost last week alone, that's a pretty good indicator that it hasn't.

You may already have Century Gothic on your Windows-XP machine, and that's almost always used for the body copy or subheads, so grab it, if you don't already have it; you're reading it now. They're free from my website. Grab 'em! Save them to your HD, and install to C:/Windows/Fonts (folder), thru your WIN XP Control Panel > Fonts > File > Install New Font. Simple stuff; just takes a few minutes.
Here are a few others, which my Journal will be written in during the coming weeks: Papyrus and Acoustic Bass, and Caesar Regular and Carleton and Charrington Strewn and Catherine. Get and install them, and see how much nicer these pages are to view and read. We didn't cause the recent Global Warming and we cannot stop it. Solar Activity appears to be the principal driver for Climate Change. O2 is a useful trace gas in the atmosphere, and the planet would actually benefit by having more, not less of it, because it is not a driver for Global Warming and would enrich our vegetation, yielding better crops to feed the expanding population. So what explained the anomaly? GISS's computerized temperature maps seemed to show readings across a large part of Russia had been up to 10 degrees higher than normal. But when expert readers of the two leading warming-skeptic blogs, Watts Up With That and Climate Audit, began detailed analysis of the GISS data they made an astonishing discovery. The reason for the freak figures was that scores of temperature records from Russia and elsewhere were not based on October readings at all. The New Yorker Video Cartoons.
I remember the enjoyment I felt when The New Yorker first came online, three years ago. A year ago, the magazine launched a major redesign and thrilled many of us, all over again. Among the fresh offerings now sparkling at newyorker.com, the animated versions of their classic cartoons are surely the most unexpected. I'd like to know what went down in the periodical's conference room when they hashed out this concept. In some ways, it's as nonsensical as animating the Mona Lisa. Why change what's already semi-perfect? On the other hand, I recently found myself forwarding more than a few of the 10-second videos. Many of my long-time favorites are here: the dogs surfing the Internet, the mouse unthinkingly playing with the cat, the snail besotted with the tape dispenser. It's curious, and a little odd, to watch them move and hear them speak. For no other reason than that, they're worth checking out.
