The problems with Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus started last Thursday, when I noticed that although on auto-LiveUpdate, my virus definitions hadn't been updated in 2 weeks. Yikes! I was using SystemWorks 2003 in my office, and the shitheads morons at Symantec had stopped supporting that version's virus defs files, without notifying anyone. I quickly purchased an online $39.95 upgrade to NAV 2006, and the install failed to get LiveUpdate to work, leaving me still vulnerable. I tried Symantec's "AutoFix Tool", and it neither fixed the problem nor got the LiveUpdate Files to install. I got offline for the day. I uninstalled the worthless upgrade. I went home and got my condo's copy of SystemWorks 2005 and installed it. Again, LiveUpdate wouldn't work. I uninstalled it, too. I went to Circuit City and bought a new $69.95 SystemWorks 2006, installed it and once again the LiveUpdate installer wouldn't work. After messing around with all kinds of workarounds/ travelling to get software for 9 hours, and getting zero work done, I downloaded a copy of Grisoft's free AVG software and installed it on Friday morning. It worked flawlessly, I configured in under 5 minutes, and I'm protected once again. The updates come automatically. My disappointment in, and anger at Symantec, will cause me to disable and remove all their AV software, but keep the utilities for machine maintenance, in my home and office units. I've used Norton products for the past 8 of the 11 years I've been on the Net, without a single incident. Norton was a great product before Symantec bought them and screwed the pooch.
Gas prices are now rising quickly at the pump, to $2.79/gal, for Unleaded Regular. Unleaded Plus is at $2.99/gal and Unleaded Premium is now at $3.09/gal. Both diesel and kerosene are seemingly still locked at $2.99/ gal. The "Summer Driving Season" is in full swing, and we all can now expect $3.25/ gal regular within a month, I'd guess. Other factors kicked-in, too. Hmmmm, light sweet crude at over $75/ BBL, would add to the price.
Last week's storm and flooding toll in Pennsylvania: 9 confirmed dead and untold millions of damage. Here are many pics of the flooding and resultant damage in the York (PA) area alone. The tally is 16 deaths in the Northeast, so far.
On the way home from work on Friday, traffic was very heavy, as the 4-day, July 4th Holiday Weekend kicked-in. I stopped at the local cleaners to pick-up some starched cotton "faded Glory" shirts, which I wear daily, and the 'Beer & Soda Store' had a line of 30-40 people waiting to get inside, and people carrying multiple cases out to their SUVs. I-83 was packed in both directions, but moving along, as I drove by on an overpass. Rt 30 was bumper-to-bumper in both directions, as I drove under it, on the way to my condo. Many are taking the 4-day holiday. I'm now closing the GC&N Complex on Sundays until September, and also taking the 4th off. First time in 16 years. Life is good. Happy 230th Birthday, America!
Retail traffic was light to moderate on Saturday, and I had 4 employees in to help with sales and do watering in the GHs. On Sunday, I slept-in until 9am, made coffee and breakfast for myself and fed the cats, and drove down to Eckerd's Drugs in Stewartstown to pick up 3 Rxs I'd forgotten on Saturday. It was 86°F at 11am, and I knew it was going to be a scorcher. Traffic was almost non-existent; it was eerie. I decided to stop in to the GC&N Complex to do some spot watering of droopy plants in the 7 GHs, and work on a couple of landscape estimates, without all the usual phone, staff and customer interruptions. I'd gotten 5 estimates done on Saturday, and finished-up the remaining 2 on my desk, on Sunday. I worked on this month's project schedule, posted this week's schedule in my office, and left after 3 productive hours. On the way home, I stopped at one of the local food supermarkets, and got some things I'd missed on last Thursday's foray into the world of food. Then home for some adult beverages, computer time and much-needed rest.
Back to work on Monday to get some small, one-day jobs done and other loose ends cleaned-up, on three completed jobs. Tuesday, the 4th of July, we were closed and it was a great cloudy/ rainy day to sleep-in, and I did until 10am. Mmmmmm, nice. Coffee, breakfast and weather/ news check on the Net. I also checked the local fireworks display schedules for the evening, went food shopping and drove through some very violent thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail on the way back home.
The 4th of July Holiday brought back memories of our Family — Mom, Dad, Becky and me — sitting at the family redwood picnic table (which they still have) in the 50s, grilling hamburgers, hot dogs, spooning Mom's patato salad, baked beans and deviled eggs on to plates, exhorting Dad to "hurry with those burgers and dogs", on the Scotch® Grill or the Weber® Kettle® (which I still have), feeding chunks of burger or hotdog to Tiger, our young kittie (she lived to 23!), and drinking gallons of homemade lemonade. Dad and I would go to the July 4th Parades, same as the Memorial Day Parades, to see all the bands, floats, US Military, and marvel at the military hardware on display. The fireworks continued during the parades, but the real shows were just after dark, and the whole family would go see them. 'Kewl' or 'awesome' would be today's adjectives; back then it was 'Ooooh' or 'Ahhhh', or just plain 'Wow'. Funny; the more things change, the more they remain the same. It was a simpler economic, social and political time, and it was comfortable to just be there, then. I truly miss those 'warm, fuzzy, hazy days'.
Rain stayed with us all day Wednesday, with plenty of severe storm and flash flood warnings, through late evening. I sent the landscape crews home at 9am, and closed the GC&N Complex at 3pm. Thunder, lightening and hard rain on the bedroom skylights, woke me around 1am, but quickly I slipped back to la-la land 'til 4am, when reality came to stay and it was time to get back up and go to work. Thursday was a wash-out, as was most of the week, July 4th Holiday included.
Personnel problems continue at work, as do our wet-weather woes for the next 10 days: rain, rain and more rain. I'm advertising for a "hardscape-mason specialist" to help my last crew chief and master-stonemason, Seth, with all the hardscape work we have coming up. I lost Dave in March, Cole in July and am in dire need of some experienced crew chiefs to fill-in for them, just to run all the waiting landscape jobs we now have on the books. Alan, my landscape foreman, is doing his level best to run 3 crews, but is feeling overwhelmned with all the pending work. Heh. Somehow, we'll get through it all.
