on the morning after a financial collapse things will look almost exactly as when you went to sleep. The elm tree and mailbox will stand where they were, the scene will appear unchanged all the way to the horizon. On The Day After, the outward world is unchanged. What will have altered beyond all recognition are the invisible claims on that physical world.
The homely mailbox, for example, may no longer be yours, nor the land on which the elm tree is growing. It could have reassigned while you were sleeping. If one can imagine the world in terms of a balance sheet, the immediate post-crash world assets start unchanged. It’s the liabilities which have been rearranged. The write down process will not be uniform.
In the bubble world there are more claims on assets than can be satisfied. In the pre-crash world this is unnoticed. As in the game of Musical Chairs, it is not obvious till the music stops. Only when the tune is interrupted, in the post-crash world, does the audience will see there is one chair short.
Politicians and unscrupulous politicians are in the profession of overselling capacity, but ensuring they always have the chair. Politicians for example, promise the same taxpayer dollar several times over to different constituencies. And it goes along swimmingly as long as they can kick the can down the road.
For example Obamacare was created to save Medicaid from bankruptcy. Now Medicaid expansion is used to prove Obamacare is working. Obamacare was funded by reductions from Medicare. Now the Medicare “doc fix” shortfall will be funded by obtaining “savings” from Obamacare. It’s circular process where the same dollar moves from chair to chair.
Banks operate on the same principle. Banks lend out more than the deposit dollar. They can do this sustainably for as long as the extra chairs can be provided by the real rate of interest. An extra chair will be created in the future, but only as many as the actual rate of growth will provide.
But sometimes people get greedy and overpromise returns. Then if everyone with a claim on a chair came to the bank and demanded a stool, there would be a shortage of stools. This is called a bank run. In that case the system relies for its continued viability on keeping the music playing. Once the needle is lifted from the record, forcing the players to scramble for a seat, it will be obvious that somebody will have to be kicked out of the game.
On the day after a crash the most important question is: who gets the chair when the music stops? Ben Stell and Dinah Walker, writing in the Council of Foreign Relations blog, explain how the French got the Italians and Spaniards to hold the bag through the simple device of turning French exposure in Greece into someone elses’, a process called “mutualization”
In March 2010, two months before the announcement of the first Greek bailout, European banks had €134 billion worth of claims on Greece. French banks, as shown in the right-hand figure above, had by far the largest exposure: €52 billion – this was 1.6 times that of Germany, eleven times that of Italy, and sixty-two times that of Spain.
The €110 billion of loans provided to Greece by the IMF and Eurozone in May 2010 enabled Greece to avoid default on its obligations to these banks. In the absence of such loans, France would have been forced into a massive bailout of its banking system. Instead, French banks were able virtually to eliminate their exposure to Greece by selling bonds, allowing bonds to mature, and taking partial write-offs in 2012. The bailout effectively mutualized much of their exposure within the Eurozone.
The impact of this backdoor bailout of French banks is being felt now, with Greece on the precipice of an historic default. Whereas in March 2010 about 40% of total European lending to Greece was via French banks, today only 0.6% is. Governments have filled the breach, but not in proportion to their banks’ exposure in 2010. Rather, it is in proportion to their paid-up capital at the ECB – which in France’s case is only 20%.
In consequence, France has actually managed to reduce its total Greek exposure – sovereign and bank – by €8 billion, as seen in the main figure above. In contrast, Italy, which had virtually no exposure to Greece in 2010 now has a massive one: €39 billion. Total German exposure is up by a similar amount – €35 billion. Spain has also seen its exposure rocket from nearly nothing in 2009 to €25 billion today.
In short, France has managed to use the Greek bailout to offload €8 billion in junk debt onto its neighbors and burden them with tens of billions more in debt they could have avoided had Greece simply been allowed to default in 2010. The upshot is that Italy and Spain are much closer to financial crisis today than they should be.
The French now have a chair. It is the Spaniards and Italians who will have to hop around some.
In Greece itself the relevant question is: who has a claim on what is left in the banks when they reopen, assuming there is anything left. Ma and Pa Greece who put their savings or investments on the system the Day Before will find the birds chirping in the Attic trees as usual. But what happened in the virtual world while they were sleeping?
Charles Forelle and Viktoria Dendrinou of the Wall Street Journal, write: “the question foremost in many Greeks’ minds: When the banks do reopen, will they still have their deposits?” The answer is probably: no. A large part of the cash they formerly had is gone. That will be represented as a claim by someone else on their savings, a process known as a “haircut”.
They have almost no cash. As of the end of May, the latest official data, they had about €2 billion ($2.2 billion). People familiar with the system estimate the figure is now below €1 billion. They also have no new access to the emergency central-bank line that had been giving them cash — the European Central Bank froze that Sunday.
They simply can’t give withdrawing depositors all the cash they want. They owe Greek customers with deposit accounts €139 billion, as of May. Thus the restrictions that limit ATM withdrawals to €60 per day and forbid electronic transfers outside Greece.
A bank’s capital is the difference between its assets and its liabilities—between what it owns and what it owes. … There are, more or less, two ways to increase a bank’s capital: boost assets or reduce liabilities. In a capital “injection,” someone gives the bank cash (an asset), typically in exchange for a share of ownership in the bank. That someone could be private investors—it is conceivable that a bank’s shareholders might put in more cash to prevent their existing stakes from being wiped out.
But in circumstances like these, it is probably the government. Of course, the Greek government has no cash. It would have to borrow it from its European creditors.
The European creditors will insist that they get paid something first. They’ll take the Greek olive tree. They’ll take the Greek mailbox. The same process of reassignment is happening in China. Last week the Chinese government threw half a trillion dollars in pension funds at the collapsing stock market to buoy it up.
The Chinese government has taken a further aggressive step to shore up the stock market, indicating its $US493 billion state pension fund would be permitted to invest in equities for the first time.
The fund is presently only allowed to invest in bank deposits and US Treasury bonds. Under the change it is expected to be permitted to invest 30 per cent of its funds in the stock market.
The official Xinhua News agency reported the guidelines for the changed investment strategy were being drafted by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Finance.
The intervention of the regulator will only fuel speculation the central government is encouraging the share market boom in an effort to boost consumer confidence as the economy slows and gains from the housing market wane.
Unfortunately, this did not stop the slide in the market. Yesterday the Chinese pension asset managers were told to give up defending the market. “China’s state pension fund ordered its asset managers not to sell any local shares on Monday, after Beijing halted new equity issues and forced the central bank to extend credit to brokers as part of emergency measures aimed at bolstering markets.”
The extraordinary intervention helped push the Shanghai Composite Index up 2.4 per cent on Monday but the rise in the overall market disguised big falls among smaller stocks not linked to the government.
In a wild day of trading, 649 stocks fell, while only 259 rose in Shanghai as the country’s 90 million retail investors appeared unconvinced by the government attempts to engender confidence.
But the damage had been done. The Chinese pensioners went to sleep with a claim on $X dollars in pensions. Presumably they woke up with considerably less.
Nothing in the external world changes in the immediate aftermath of a crash. What changes are the claims on that physical world. The iron rule is: the players never lose a seat, but you may lose yours. It’s the rest who suddenly awaken to stores that are not theirs, jobs that no longer exist, and sales orders that have been canceled. They go from employed to being unemployed; from solvent to broke.
They’ll ask themselves: “why? why?” Well now you know why.
Eventually the physical world starts to change to reflect the payments that have to be made to the players. Trade begins to contract, stores start to close and desperate individuals start to riot. In the naive days of the 20th century, when faith in angels and demons began to wane, it was fashionable to regard matter as primary. Wars were fought by burning actual buildings, killing physical people. But today we know that information has physical force. Computer programs, genetic instructions, memes — and financial data — are to all intents and purposes actual things, rather than airy nonsense.
Unfortunately we still live in a world governed by ancient 19th century Marxian ideas, where politicians regard information as infinitely corruptible, in a world where lies are not only common, but the stuff of power, the very sinews or privilege. A financial crisis occurs when information goes so far out of whack with the physical world the music has to stop, and those without a chair must be booted off.
What a financial crisis does is bring an awakening world face to face with its own falsehoods. Suddenly they are in the nightmare world. But it’s a not a new world at all. Only the one the players had been constructing all along.

A Day In The Life
Friday morning at 7:45 was a nice 67°F, sunny and not-too-humid start to the day. While having OJ and coffee, I checked the past 2 days' to-do lists, and needed to get caught-up on stuff I'd missed since my dumb stunt with soured milk on Wednesday evening. The garbage trucks rolled thru around 9am, as I got ready to leave. I'll have to catch the morning's missed WMAL-DC Chris Plante Show on podcast, later. I stopped at Dad's to get some GC&N sale documents copied and review others from the archives, with him, but he'd left 40mins before I arrived. After I got the docs copied, I headed to my personal/corporate attorney's office brownstone building in downtown York, dropped-off a pile of documents, and went to get some bank deposits made, do some food shopping, pick-up shirts

I slept-in on Sunday until 9am, after waking-up a couple of times during the night, thinking of my friends' über-serious medical problems. My own back/hip/leg was hurting, from I-don't-know-what, so I splashed cold water on my face to clear the "cobwebs", grabbed a handful of Bayer® 325mg Aspirin, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ w/ lots of pulp, a 6-cup Chemex® Carafe of French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee from whole, freshly-ground Dark French Roast Fresh Whole Beans. I checked the weather, news and email (now working), and cellphone voicemails. It was laundry day, and I'd get to it soon. There was a growing pile of paperwork on the DR/my office table, so I'd need to get thru it and the prelim sorting and filing, today. Monday started out a sunny, warm 72°F and not-too-humid day at 7am. After juice and coffee, I checked the weather and news channels, and started to listen to the 9am - 12noon EST streaming Chris Plante Show, WMAL-DC, when my Sister called. She had Matt, Spartan Computer's owner at her condo doing some iMac, iPhone and iPad work, and needed a USB-printer cord. I found one in my electronics shelves in the basement, and drove it over, installed it, found the printer driver & software and installed them, and got her iMac up and running. Sweet. I left at 1pm, stopped for a few errands, called Dad but he wasn't home and headed home by 4. Two neighbors stopped by with a jammed AR-15 from their morning's shooting club activity, and I took them to the basement workshop. The buffer spring had bent and jammed, and required me to disassemble more of the rifle than I wanted to, but I had a spare spring, installed it and they were good to go. I can get a replacement AR-15 spring next time I'm down at Freedom Armory. By 7pm, I'd made a Cheeseburger & Fries, turned on "American Pickers" and watched until 11:30pm. Enough for today.
Up at 6:30am on Tuesday, I remembered that the cleaning ladies would be here by 9, so OJ and coffee went quickly. I made calls to the District 8 offices of PennDOT (Roads & Transportation, NOT Driver's Licenses) in Harrisburg, to get the 1990 copy of the Highway Occupancy Permit (HOP), and was helped by some great people, who emailed me a 2-page document in *.pdf by 3pm, n/c. I drove to WEIS Market to get a few things, ran into more friends and former customers. I had some other stops to get done before visiting Dad, and was back home by 1pm. My back was hurting by then, and I laid down on the LR couch for a little while. I fell asleep until almost 6, woke to a nasty t-storm moving thru the area, made a couple of Tomato Sandwiches on Toasted Rye, watched "Counting Cars" until 11, and closed down for the night.
After being abruptly awakened at 2 and 3am, by violent t-storms moving thru the area, I got up at 8 to a 68°F, humid and cloudy morning. While enjoying the OJ and making coffee, my computer got an "Important MS Update" message: 20 updates/patches totalling 388.7 Mb of data, which needed downloading and installing. Jeeez, what a load! It took almost 2 hours to d'lwd/install, and you dare not interrupt that process or you'll have a true mess on your hands. It finally finished and I left for Dad's to get some pics of his antique York Safe & Lock Co safe, in his basement: side view of front door and open safe with 2 internal safes. His AC wasn't running, so I tried the GFI and unit breaker switches, but they weren't affected, so I called his usual HVAC service company. Up at 7:30am on Thursday, I made OJ and coffee, skipped breakfast and got ready for the drive south to the GC&N and Freedom Armory. 56°F, a nice day, traffic was light at 9:30, I stopped by Walt's Barbershop but it was full, and the ride was uneventful. After opening the GC&N's main building, the alarm keypad was beeping, and the LCD messages read: FIRE ALARM... SMOKE DETECTOR... BREACH WINDOWS 3-4... PERIMETER BREACHED... After carefully checking the building's windows, doors and smoke/heat detectors, I couldn't find any sign of such problems. I reset the keypad 4x with my codes, and relocked the building as I left. From there, I drove to Freedom Armory to get an adapter for my AAC Suppressor/Silencer so it could be moved to another AR-15 I own, instead of the other AR-15 Class III SBR (short barrel rifle) it was originally mounted on. It's on backorder and will take 2-3 weeks to get delivered. Next, I drove to Brown's Market to get some things and then back home by 12:30pm. After putting the AR-15 and suppressor back into the gunsafe, I unpacked the Jeep, put that stuff into the 'fridge, and made a Roast Beef, Slaw, Tomato & Cheese Sandwich for lunch.
As I was listening to the news, the terrible story broke over the Net news sites: Another piece-of-pigshit-muslim (spit) murders more Americans; 4 US Marines slaughtered at a US Military Base. Again! So the Ft Hood massacre, Little Rock recruiting station and Washington Navy Yard weren't enough? WTF! I was outraged, again. Criminal lowlife dirtbag rapist Bubba Jeffy Klintstone disarmed the US Military, Bush continued it, and 0sambo-boy has doubled-down on it. I'm not disarmed, dammit. Since 9-11, I've said scores of time, in these pages, that subhuman, murderous, blood gargling, troglodyte-from-hell muslims (spit!) would be attacking "soft targets" – schools, nursing homes, sporting events, churches, shopping malls, office complexes etc – but never did I dream that they'd penetrate US Military Bases and massacre disarmed Military. I'd rather they go after 0sambo's White Hut/Crib and obliterate it in 10 mins, or less. (h/t Ben).
By 7:30, I was deluged with email from friends and "Journal" readers, asking what size ICBM W88 MIRV we should decimate/annihilate/obliterate the whole Middle East with. 30-40 ICBMs should nicely do it, and since most of the oil will still be underground, we can claim that, too, and run the place dry. I started watching some NatGeoTV Yukon Gold episodes until 12:30am, and bagged it for the night.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and I've already lined-up the safe guy to come to Dad's for a full day, to get the combinations for the 4 locks on that 1941 York Safe. I'm planning on taking Dad handgun target shooting at Freedom Armory, most likely the following week. Neither of us have any Dr app'ts and, if my back holds out, I can get to some garage clean-out for him on a few of the not-so-muggy days during both weeks. I'm armed-up with a heavily-modified AR-15, 60-round mags and my Kimber 1911 .45 ACP, just in case the muzzie/islamic (spit!) subhuman murderers go batshit, nearby. I suggest you do the same if you have a CCW/CHL, and prepare for what's coming our way. And don't forget what Greece is going thru; it can and will happen here. Be prepared for that eventuality, too.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

First, Israel is preparing for war, after being attacked for years on many fronts, and not fighting back as she should have. This war will truly have "Biblical implications" around the world. The Middle East is rapidly-collapsing under the subhuman, murderous muslim/islamic riots (muslim Brotherhood) and rule ("arab Spring"), with world crude oil prices projected to hit $200+/bbl, or even higher into the $300-$400 range,

"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
