A Day In The Life
Friday morning was cold (36°F) and overcast, but since I had a 10am meeting with my current realtor (marketing the 20ac GC&N Complex for sale), I needed to get up and moving at 7:30am. While enjoying some Fresh-Squeezed OJ, and enjoying several mugs of steaming hot, French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee, I did some quick paperwork and checked the weather and news sites. T-storms were moving into PA from the west, and would hit this area in the afternoon, so I could get some stuff planted after I got back from a few errands. I left at 9, got the stops done, and was back just before my realtor pulled up to my Condo. We reviewed his past year's efforts, talked about the 2 currently pending sale inquiries, and that ended the meeting; nothing concrete after almost 3yrs. The economy's been
High for the day was 61°F. After some more paperwork, I made an easy Almond-Crusted Salmon in Hollandaise, w/ Roasted Potatoes for lunch, and I did some front garden weeding, and clean-up work on the Jeep's interior. The Ophthalmologist's (MD) office called and reset my appointment for Monday, at 11:15am. By 4pm, the t-storms began to hit the York area, temps dropped quickly and I bagged the outside work for the day. A ***SEVERE STORM WATCH*** was posted on weather sites, and was broadcast across the streaming radio station I was listening to. I slept-in until 7:30am on Saturday, and woke to a bright, sunny, 51°F day. As the coffee was brewing, I made OJ and checked the weather and news sites, scanned email and looked at the weekend's list of "stuff-to-do". I had a 10am meeting at Dad's, with Becky, to finalize her lscp plan and plant list, go food shopping tomorrow, get a large number of boxes and bags ready for Monday pick-up by the Purple Heart Foundation at Dad's home, and a Dr's appointment. Not much, yet. I left for Dad's at 9:30, gassed-up the Jeep on the way over, met with Becky on the landscape project, did some small projects for Dad, and will go back over tomorrow to get all the donation boxes labeled and moved outside the attached garage, for PHF's 7am-7pm pick-up. On the way back, I stopped at a local Church's Chicken BBQ event at one of the local parks, and bought 3 full Chicken BBQ & Baked Potato w/ Roll and Applesauce Dinners, as take-outs for my next 3 days' meals; no cooking for me. Sunday morning was already a sunny, 46°F when I got-up at 7am, had coffee, OJ and some simple Sunny-Side-Up Eggs & Hash Browns. Not much on the news or weather sites, and email was relatively light at only 34, so I spent some time answering the important ones, and tagging/flushing the unwanted commercial junk. With the upstairs Condo windows open, I fed the birds, got the week's mail and left for Dad's at 10am. He's still nowhere near 100% recovered from his recent flu/pneumonia, but he did come outside in the fresh air while I moved 26 labeled boxes and 3 bags of donations out to his driveway pad, for tomorrow's 7am-7pm pick-up. We visited for a while, and I was back home by 12:45pm. The damage done by Friday's t-storms, which spawned multiple tornadoes, but made it up north to us as violent t-storms, was terrible down in North Carolina. Awake at 4am, I rolled-over and went back to sleep until 6:30 on Monday, got-up to a fairly cold (34°F), but sunny day. After making OJ and coffee, I checked the weather and news websites, downloaded a very light load of email, and saw that the coming t-storms had wreaked a huge swath of damage, destruction and death, last night, in Arkansas, Oklahoma and into Iowa. The destructive "Spring Tornado Season", has officially begun. As a change-of-pace for breakfast, I made a simple bowl of Cream of Wheat w/ Keller's Butter, spent some time going thru the news, grabbed a shower, started a final load of laundry and went out to start the Jeep, and it wouldn't hold an idle. I finally got it running, had to get some things for Becky, drove to Dad's and moved all those boxes and bags inside the detached garage, due to approaching storms, and ran some of many needed errands.
I made my 1:15pm Ophthalmologist's (MD) appointment, and he's optimistic that the floaters in my right eye will clear-up, without surgery. He did suggest, however, that I restrict my vision-intensive time on the computer, use some Rx saline drops, and wear an eye patch (at home) to rest the eye. I'm "mulling" the eye patch thing, but will do the Dr's other
I slept-in on Tuesday morning until 7:15, rainy and cool at 37°F, made coffee, had some Del Monte® Mango/Passionfruit Chunks and an English Muffin w/ Peach Preserves. After downloading email, I checked the weather, news websites and saw the headlines about more tornado damage, destruction and death in the South, overnight.
The pounding rain on the Condo's skylights and windows woke me at 6:30am on Wednesday, and after looking out of the 2nd floor BR windows, I could see the flooded front street, with pear and cherry
I slept-in until 7am on Thursday, a comparatively warm 54°F, with no heavy rain this morning, but as cells passed thru the area, and only a light drizzle coming down. After OJ and coffee, I checked the weather websites; a ***FLOOD WARNING*** was now in effect, and I suspect it'll be there for a few more days, as the land areas drain-off into the creeks/streams/rivers, and those crest to and over, flood stage. My garden's rain gauge measured another 4" of water; that's almost 10" in 2½ days. Not as bad as what FL got, but still a lot. Sucks to be in the landscape/lawn maintenance business; heh. After a light breakfast of Poached Eggs w/ Canadian Bacon, I got ready, loaded the Jeep and drove over to Dad's, at 9:15am, to pick him up, get some additional things, and go to Becky's. That done, I drove Dad (he's back to about 90% from the flu/pneumonia) home, helped him with a few things, and came home around 12noon.
High for the day was a warm 73°F, and very humid from all of the rain. After listening to the morning's missed Chris Plante Show 3hr Podcast, I tuned into the usual Mark Levin Show, from 6-9, and switched-over to the Military Arms Channel, from 9-12:30am, for some great hardware videos. I packed it in for the night, armed the Condo and decided to sleep-in a little in the morning.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and the week ahead is starting to get busy, with a dr's app't, shopping with Becky for Dad's Father's Day gifts – new stove and dishwasher to match his new 'fridge – a half-day of shooting at Freedom Armory, and whatever else pokes its head into the tent. Tomorrow's also a very somber day for Dad, Becky and me, as it was 2 years ago today, that Mom passed away, at 87. We visited her creche in the Victorian Chapel at Mt Rose Cemetery, last Sunday. RIP, Mom.

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. It is called the Center of Military History. It is located 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C., at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building itself is very nondescript.
But behind a series of highly alarmed doors and long, cement, camera-laden hallways. It is the highly sophisticated, climate-controlled treasure room where the army keeps its most precious artifacts.
The facility was built for $24 million in 2010. The cavernous warehouse is typically shrouded in total darkness. Motion lights illuminate only the areas in which someone is walking.
If I could get tickets, I'd fork over my first-born child. Oh wait; I don't have one. Heh. I'd go there in a heartbeat.
Some People Just Need Killing
