A Day In The Life
Up at 7:30 on Friday morning, it started out cloudy and 43°F, and stayed cloudy but finally hit 66°F. With OJ and coffee, I checked the usual news and weather, and viola!, email was working slick as whale shit as can be. Just amazing; I think I figured the server problem(s) out. While listening to the first 30 minutes of the 9am - 12noon EST streaming Chris Plante Show, WMAL-DC (click LISTEN LIVE at top right of page), I put the garage freezer project on hold, and drove to my eye doc's for a check-up on the right eye floaters. I still can't see clear enough in the right eye to do any target shooting, unless
it's with a recoiless BB gun (no, I don't own one), or drive at night in headlight glare, but there are only 3 of the original 5 floaters remaining. So it's improving, slowly. With that good news, I drove east to the Lancaster area to visit a favorite gun shop and the owner and his wife, old friends I'd hadn't seen in several years. We went out for lunch, to the legendary Bulls Head Public House, had wonderful meals, got caught-up on recent events, and I left at 3pm. My
Saturday morning's 54°F and cloudy start belied the day ahead. I skipped breakfast, and just had juice and coffee, checked the news, weather and email (working 2 days in a row!). Today was "document shredding day" at Cousler Park, in Manchester Twp, so I dove to Dad's, loaded the 10 boxes he and I'd worked on last week, and with him and Becky, caravanned to the very crowded park. It was also baseball Saturday, overflowing with sports events, music festivals and thousands of people, many hundreds of cars and severely congested roads. I have some outdoor landscape projects to get done for him, as soon as my back gives me the go-ahead. Finished with the shredding, and with Dad and Becky Gas and diesel prices at the pump, are up another 6¢, since Friday, April 24th: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now at $2.75/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $2.85/gal, Premium (93 oct) is $3.05/gal, with Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 also rising to $3.45/gal. dropped-off, I left from Dad's to get to the bank to get my Income Tax Refund deposited, but it had closed at 12noon. Then I stopped at a roadside Chicken BBQ stand put on by a local fire company and picked-up a couple of dinners. Monday will be fine for the check deposit and other banking errands, and I have to be at Becky's condo when the driveway sealers are there, to "supervise", and then drive south to Stewartstown to p/u some waiting Rxs. After a cool 43°F night and a warmer 53°F morning, I was up at 7am on a sunny, very pleasant start to Sunday. Dad went to his Otterbein United Methodist Church 11am service in Emigsville, and called me when he got back at 1pm. I went out for an hour walk in between wash loads, since my back was feeling ok. I got an email from my local bank's branch manager, asking if I could stop to meet with them about safe deposit vaults, which I was starting to lose interest in. Meanwhile, I went to Dad's to size-up some projects for a 3:30pm meeting tomorrow with Ben, who worked for my company back in the mid-90s, and who now has his own landscape company. After an hour, I drove back out to East York to SKH to check on some Red Fountain Grass/(Pennisetum setaceum) grasses for Dad and my porches' urns; too early, and maybe they'll be ready in another 1-2 weeks. I'll keep checking other places, too, as I travel. After getting home, grabbing a quick BLT with Fried Egg, Cheese sandwich, picked-up where I'd left off on some paperwork, went to the two meetings, and got home in decent time after a few stops. I caught the early news, finished the last of the paperwork, watched Discovery's "Life Below Zero" series until 11, and packed it for the day.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and except for a Dr's appointment, it's a relatively "un-busy" week, right now. Looks like Summer's heat and humidity are here, and I sure hope all the work that's been done on the Jeep gives me some decent AC as I motor around; we'll soon see. Meanwhile, I'll have to nurse my back and hip until June, when I see that Dr. Get yourself and family ready for a long, hot Summer, now that the inner-city ferals and ghetto-rats are threatening the country.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate demokkkRAT candidate Elizabeth "Lying Injun Bitch" Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
