A Day In The Life
I did sleep-in until 8am, on Friday, getting-up to another warm, 49°F, sunny day. Still tired, I stumbled downstairs w/ my Turkish Bathrobe, started the usual Fresh-Squeezed OJ, seedless red grapes and had several mugs of steaming hot, French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee. Damn, I'm sneezing myself silly this year, as with last Spring's pollen. I don't remember any previous years, except the last two, where I've had this new-found allergy. No allergy shots or meds for me, though.
I needed to run out and get some Marlboros, but was again having trouble getting the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee "Laredo", to even hold an idle, when starting from cold. This problem began on Monday when I filled-up the 20gal tank with No-Name 87oct at the same convenience store I was trying to get to, for smokes. After "feathering" the gas for 3-4mins, and getting the engine up to temperature, I managed to get it running smoothly and completed that errand. I decided that I'd gotten a bad load of fuel – the gas companies' refineries are switching numerous Winter-to-Summer formulations – and who knows what was in the 17gals I paid $72 for? I needed to burn-off the tank and get a partial load of Sunoco 93oct to see if that
I drove south on I-83 to the MD Line, turned around and drove north to York, TWICE at high speed (safely); burned-off almost tank. I'll do the same tomorrow and Sunday, and get a Sunoco 93 fill-up as soon as the warning light comes on. For a late lunch, I made a an Allen Bros' medium-rare 10oz Bacon-Wrapped Filet Mignon, sliced thin on Rye, fried onions and red grapes. After arming the Condo, I drove east on Rt 30 thru Lancaster, and back at relatively high speed (safely), and ate-up another ¼ of a tank.
The chirping robins, on my outside BR windows' hip-roof over the garage, woke me at 7am on Saturday, to a cloudy, 44°F day. After looking out the window, I could see the bird feeder was empty, and they were complaining; I'll fill it later this morning before I leave. While the coffee was brewing and steeping, I had some Texas Red Grapefruit, an English Muffin w/ Apricot Preserves, and checked the weather and news sites. I had some things to take over to Dad's, and other things to help him with, so I got ready, fed the birds and left at 9:30am. We finished by 11:30 and, although the Jeep still had the idle problem, I warmed it up, and made it home with nary a glitch. The most bizarre, high-pitched, regularly-repeating whistle noise woke me at 6:15am on Sunday. I grabbed my Kimber .45cal, an extra mag, and looked around, carefully going downstairs and to the basement to find the source, but by then, it'd stopped and wasn't repeating. With no "muscle memory" of that sound, I couldn't equate it to anything tangible. It was unlike anything I'd ever heard before.
The afternoon went by quickly, as I made adjustments to the ongoing 2nd Qtr Budget and worked on the Condo's 3rd Qtr Budget. I listened to "Gun Talk Radio", streaming live from 2-5pm. I went out for a walk and ran into several neighbors – "snowbirds" in FL for the Winter months – who just returned now that the Winter From Hell was finally over – so I spent some time catching-up with them, and playing with their various dogs. Showers moved thru the area, I went home and buttoned-up the place, turned-up the heat, as temps had dropped into the mid-40s for the night. I stumbled on to both the "Road & Track" and "Car & Driver" YT Channels, and suckered myself into watching way too many car videos, until 11:45pm. Time for sleep.
Monday was a cool 43°F, sunny morning when I got up at 7:30, fired-up the heat and computer, made coffee and OJ, and heard that traffic was backed-up for many miles on Rt 30 East due to PennDOT roadwork, and West, due to a motorcycle/multi-car accident just before my exit. The side roads were heavily-impacted, too, so I decided to stay away from those areas until they got it cleared. I slept-in until 7:30am on Wednesday, and got up to a 52°F, sunny day turning dark and cloudy, as t-storms moved from west to east. After OJ and coffee, I went out on a pile of errands, drove to North York and got a pic of the bar/restaurant's hilarious "Shit On A Single" sign, stopped at the drycleaners, a local nursery to check on certain grasses for porch urn pots for Dad and myself, Weis Market and the bank. I got home about 12:30pm, unloaded the Jeep, saw the t-storms arriving in West York, and slipped the vehicle into the garage. A few more returning "snowbirds" stopped by to say hello, and catch-up on the Winter From Hell. I made a plate of Roast Beef Sandwich & Fries Smothered in Gravy, laid down in the LR couch to rest, and wound-up falling asleep until 4pm. Damn. I listened to part of the morning's missed Chris Plante Show 3hr Podcast until 6pm, and next the regular Mark Levin Show, until 9, and some YT Vids until 12:30am. I used "self restraint" to turn-off those wonderful Ferrari, Bugatti Veyron, Ford GT and other clips, and bag it for the night. I had a whole list of things to get done tomorrow morning and afternoon. Lights out.
Up at 6:30am on Thursday, it was already a cloudy, 53°F day, with occasional showers and t-storms forecast for the next few days, as warm fronts clash with cooler air. Typical Spring weather; meh.
Tomorrow starts a new week here in the "Journal", and other than Dad's new appliances arriving on Monday, I have an open week, but anticipate it getting filled-up helping Dad and Becky, while squeezing-in my errands and appointments, where possible. Summer weather will make feel better than what we all went thru last Winter, but I don't look forward to the weeks of oppressive heat and humidity. That too, shall pass.

The definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today in the United States of America:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it! That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Makes you wonder who is doing the math.

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
