there's just so much BS I can take before I have to get in my Jeep and go for a long drive, to clear-it-all-out of my head and refresh my poor brain (or what's left of it). And with the millions of trees' leaf colors already changing up in the Pennsylvania Mountains, it's a good beginning. The drive alone will do me some "therapeutic good", despite what I'm going through right now.
Between the rapidly-failing US Economy, *back-to-back national depressions* (NOT recession), rampant political corruption, dissolution of my 21+ year-old business, personal anguish at being powerless to "fix things", elderly Parents' declining health, new financial woes, dismal job prospects (I'm way-overqualified for anything around here), 9-month abstension from alcohol and opiate-based painkillers (for L5 Vertebrae & Sciatica Nerve Pain), massive weightloss, I figured it's time to just take a ride, see Nature at One of Her Best Seasons, and clear-out some "cobwebs".
I started-out 3x for "that drive" right after work on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday, but never made it more than 8-10 miles; I had a long list things to do to get ready to move certain items from the Complex to my condo, unexpected cellphone calls to return, and another *emergency call* to get back down to the Complex, because of an "intruder alert" from my security company, which turned-out to be a faulty motion detector, and it was replaced. I tried again on Wednesday after work, but another mundane but necessary "chore" prevented me from even starting-out on the 1-3 hour trip. I'll try again on either Saturday or Sunday, leave the cellphone off, and just GO, dammit!
Check that; now that I've moved my massive Gun Safe and numerous weapons, I have to take 5-6 very large loads of ammo and firearms-related gear home and re-stock the Safe, so I won't be driving anywhere this coming weekend. I'll try for a long ride, after I get all that done. Damn; it's "always something", isn't it?
When I get through all this "closing-down BS" and assorted headaches – it's 10x worse to close-down than to open-up a business, BTW – I'll have some time to take drives, visit my virtual "Cabin" in the quaint old village of Adam's Junction, decompress with some time-off, and then I have to look for a job to support myself. No, under PA's screwed-up law, I'm not eligible for UC (Unemployment Compensation), even though I've paid hundreds-of-thousands of my dollars into it over the past 21 years, and there's no way I'd even think of retiring early, since I plowed 10 years of my SSI ernings into the business during the lean, early years, just to pay expenses. I'd now have about $1,100/mo if I retire at 62; about $2,300/mo if I wait until 66. Impossible to live on, IMO. I should have almost DOUBLE that if I hadn't done what I did – on my idiot CPA's advice – to keep us afloat during the early 90s. Now, I regret it bigtime. But it is what it is.

My super-fast HP Pavilion HPE h8se series (Win-7 Pro) Condo Computer has been having some "critical events" since I installed the Acronis Monitoring Software on my Office and Condo HP machines, a few weeks ago. The BIOS, chipset and various drivers desperately needed updating, so I did that Thursday evening from HP's Support Site, and that seemed to fix it. I need to update the Office unit's software, too.
I listened to The Mark Levin Show from 6-9pm EST, on WABC-770AM (lots of Net links here), watered and fed Murphy for the night, laid-out everything for the morning and headed upstairs to sleep. The dreaded 4:15am would come way too early, once again. Murphy was close on my heels.
3:30am came far, far too early; I just couldn't sleep any longer, knowing what was ahead for the next few days. I watered and fed Murphy, made breakfast, scanned the The local paper ran an article about my closing; quite depressing. weather and new sites, grabbed a shower, fresh clothes and a Pendleton® Woolen Shirt, and left for work at 5:45am. It was 39°F outside and very chilly. Stopping at Sheetz® for more coffee and smokes, I ran into a couple of Friends/Customers who'd read the Tuesday newspaper's newspaper article about my closing-down, and chatted with them about "things", for a while. I opened-up at 6:30 and went through all the new fax requests for "donations", checking their forms and paperwork. I had far too many other things to do, with retail customers, catching-up tree installations and landscape jobs, scheduling and digging for upcoming tree installs, so I left it in a pile for later attention in the midday. I didn't even get to my email until later in the evening. I completely forgot about it. First time in a long time, BTW.
Friday was a busy retail sales and np-org day; very busy. Dad, Kim and I were scrambling to get the retail Customers' purchases through the front counter register and loaded, and helping to collate the np-orgs' "required donation paperwork" – letter of request/thank-you on their letterhead, IRS 501(3)(c) Tax Form, and plant material "picking list" w/ 5 categories – so they could get their stuff pulled and reserved. It's getting later and later into the year, and this plant material needs to get into the ground. Meanwhile, my "Mother Nature's In Charge; We're Just Along For The Ride." – John II, 1996 remaining 2 landscape crewmen were installing Customers' pre-paid container trees in the morning, and digging larger (3½-5" caliper) trees in the afternoon, for next week's installations, before the rains get here on Wednesday and Thursday. It was a hectic day. I also had my 8pm Church meeting to go to, but I knew that I was going to be very tired by 8pm, at the pace we were going all-day. I had skipped the past Friday's 8pm meeting, so I needed to go tonight.
I got home around 9:45 after the meeting, and following business discussion, fed and watered Murphy for the night, and still hadn't scanned or answered any of my 700+ emails in the day's queue; I just shut it all down and went upstairs to sleep through the depression. I've *got to get rid* of these unfamiliar feelings and the all-encompassing sadness, as it's eating-me-up on the inside, and it shows on the outside to everyone, I'm sure. I'm not a "happy camper", these days. I've now become anti-social and withdrawn, and desperately need to deal with it and get past it, quickly. I turned out the lights at 10pm. Sleep felt good.
The task ahead of you is never as great as The Power behind you.I was up at 4:15am with the alarm, watered and fed Murphy, made a quick breakfast, took my time scanning the weather and news sites, and left for work at 6:30, still in the dark. "Lighter later; darker earlier", every day now. Counsin Tom's Church stopped-by to pick-up their donated plant material. Two of my favorite – they met while working for me and married – friends and former employees, Dave & Jennifer, stopped by just before noon on Saturday, and we had a wonderful visit. I missed them both very much over the years since they left for better career opportunities, which I unfortunately couldn't counter-offer, and they've done very well for themselves. I wish them the very best in their life together.
Some more Friends/Customers dropped-by to make purchases and wish me well, and fellow industry Friends from Manor View Farms (MD), did the same, while offering to purchase some/all of my construction equipment: I have 3 late model 10-ton Ford F-350HD and F-450HD stake-body dumptrucks, a 1990 John Deere 675B Skid-Loader with Backhoe Attachment, a 2008 John Deere 317 Skid-Loader, a John Deere 3500 Series Compact Tractor, many power tools, a Honda 3100 Portable Generator, zillions of handtools & wheelbarrows, pesticide/herbicide/fungicide application equipment, and much, much more. All accumulated of over 21 years in business, services/repaired regularly and kept in pristine shape.
I'd had enough by 2:45 and closed-down at 3pm, filled an Rx at The Weis Market Drug Store in East York, went home to water and feed Murphy, curl-up on the LR couch, and take a long nap. I had the week's mail to pick-up at the CHCA community mailbox, food shopping to do in the morning at Weis for a "special course entreé for the evening's BBQ cookout" at Linda's, visit or call Mom & Dad, and get to work by 10:30am. Busy day ahead. I poured drink for myself and watched Tom Selleck in "Jesse Stone: Sea Change" and in "Jesse Stone: Innocents Lost" on separate DVDs, as I have the complete 7 DVD Set – with a new "Jesse Stone" movie of his coming out – in 2012. I never tire of that series; never. Absolutely excellent. I poured another drink for myself and watched it to its always surprising conclusion. Tom Selleck is so damned good as Jesse Stone.
By 10:30pm, I was nodding-off after the 2nd DVD had finished. Another superb Tom Selleck Movie. I'd been thinking about business and personal things again, in "my dead zone", and decided to sleep on it. I'm going to "mull". It'd be a long and busy day Sunday, and I could use the sleep. 10:30 was way past my usual bedtime, considering I usual get-up at 3:30-4am, but tomorrow I'd water and feed Murphy, and then go back to sleep for a couple of hours, until it was time to make breakfast and go shopping and get some other things done before going to work. Murphy followed me upstairs and I turned-out the light.
After getting up at 3:45am to feed and water Murphy, I went back to sleep until 7:45am, re-watered him and made myself some Grits w/ Butter & Sea Salt, sunnyside-up eggs, hash browns, bacon & toast for breakfast, and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from fresh-roasted, whole beans), with my Chemex® Drip System. I finished-up my food shopping list, grabbed a shower/ fresh clothes and headed out to the market. After getting home, unpacking and separating-out what I'd need for the BBQ/cook-out that evening, I called Mom for a chat – I didn't get over to visit, but will more often after I'm closed-down on November 1st – and headed out to work.
Sunday was a very busy retail day – NO np-orgs allowed on the weekend and I'm cutting all that off as of Monday, October 10th; I've had enough of all the IRS-required paperwork and hundreds of manhours required by Steffi, Kim & me to help them – which I do not get any IRS write-off for. Enough is enough, already. I've taken the offer down on both my Corporate Home Page and What's New Page. Paying retail Customers get 100% preference over all np-orgs. Period. No exceptions.
In addition to helping retail Customers, I worked on the next 2 weeks' schedules, and posted them for my 7:30am meeting with Alan, on Monday. I got out at 3:15pm, went home to take care of Murphy, gather-up the foodstuffs I'd need for the evening's course I was preparing – 6" Portobello Mushroon Caps, stuffed & layered with homemade and spicy Sun-Dried Tomato & Basil Mozzarella Cheese, paper-thin-sliced Proscuitto Parmigiano Reggiano Ham, Borretane Onions, Thin-Sliced Ripe Tomatoes, Marinated Italian Mushrooms, Flame-Roasted Red Pepper Strips, topped w/ Fresh-Picked Sweet Italian Basil Leaves, drizzled w/ Porcini Olive Oil – just for one of several courses at the cook-out, for 8-9 Friends. I'll slather the mushroom caps with EVOO, grill them and and the cheese (layered inside) with "crossmarks", then assemble the rest of the ingredients, and reheat them on the grill before serving. This is a meal in itself. They alo served shrimp appetizer, anti-pastas, snacks, massive T-bone steaks, weet potato-squash-marshmallow pudding and apple cobbler/ice cream desserts. As it got dusk and dark, temps dropped into the low-60s, since we were eating on their back deck, facing the massive landscape job and raised flagstone patio we'd done the previous year for Linda & Scott. I finally got back around 8:30pm; great people, nice party, nice time. But I ate too much, way too late in the day/evening, far beyond what I'm used to doing, and was full beyond belief. I knew I was going to have to go back on my "quick-weight-loss" program and get rid of this newfound belly, quickly. And I knew that I'd have trouble sleeping that night, with such a full stomach.
Murphy was waiting for me, so I took care of his evening watering & feeding, turned-up the heat to 78°F, since temps had dropped into the upper-50s and were still dropping. I called it a weekend and a day, at 9:15pm. I had to get up at 4:15am and start it all over again, with a very busy week ahead. Three weeks to go before I close down, for good.
I was up with the 4:30 alarm, watered and fed Murphy, made breakfast and coffee, and took my time scanning weather and news websites, before leaving. I came home in the dark from last night's cook-out, and wanted to wait a while until it wasn't so dark this morning. I had to make the bed, as I do every morning, gather-up and fold laundry from the dryer load from last night, collect shirts for dropping-off at the launderers after work today, so I had plenty of time before I had to leave. I finally left at 6:30.
Monday was another very hectic day, with both Dad and Steffi off, and Kim and I fumbling our way through complicated purchases at the front counter register's clumbsy, shitty Radiant® CounterPoint® v7 POS (point-of-sale) DOS program, running inside a Windows XP-Pro "shell". We had to hand-write the complicated purchases for Dad and Steffi to input on Tuesday, and then we could do the easy transactions. I hate Radiant®'s CounterPoint® v7 POS. Give me WIN-7 Pro, any-damned-day over that antiquated v7 shit-system! I called several Customers on A/R to get their payments of close to $5,370, for recent jobs, so I can pay bills and make payroll this week, so I can clear-out A/R before closing on the 28th. They were most understanding and cooperative. I appreciated them very much, for being so.
Alan & Arthur had 3 4-5" caliper trees to install far west of here in Abbottstown, left at 9:15 after getting loaded-up, and returned just before 2:45pm; I was impressed at their alacrity in getting such a large task done so quickly, but "everything went just right", for a change. I'm still being beseiged by np-orgs, and will be cutting-it-all-off, on Tuesday, for good. Those who've submitted their proper paperwork can finish cleaning-out the GHs, Retail Nursery Areas and 87 tree rows (400+ trees), and get it installed at their facilities. Those who haven't are SOL (shit-out-of-luck), as far as I'm concerned. I have too many rescheduled and newly-requested tree installation.lscp maintenance/landscape jobs and rainy days ahead, to deal with any more of the np-orgs, from now on. This has been going-on for 5-6 weeks, and that's enough. Finis! I slept-in until 5:30am, watered and fed Murphy, made breakfast and coffee, scanned the weather and new sites, and saw that the rest of the week's work schedule was probably going to be rained-out, or at the very least, re-scheduled into next week, which I partially did yesterday, knowing that rain was coming. The only questions are: how much will we get, how muddy will it be and how many delays will it all cause beyond where we're at now, as a result? If I knew the answers, I'd be God, and I'm surely not Him. Still dark and a chilly 47°F outside, I left at 6:30 and headed to Sheetz® for more coffee and smokes.
I opened-up and was inside the Complex by 7:15, and started cleaning-out my Cannon T-65 ® "Traditional Series"® (last of its kind) Double-Door ($3,524.99 in 2002) Gunsafe's weapons, ammo and other valuables which I've stored in the GC&N for many years, and which'll be moved to my condo, for good. After opening-up the large safe, and removing the 8 long-rifles, stowing them in their Eagle Carrying Bags, plus the 250,000+ rounds of ammo from the left side and top, I also noticed
Since Wednesday was going to be a rainy day and we needed to get many Customers' pre-paid trees out of large 50-gal & 100-gal boxes, B&B'd for installation and are now caught-up on all our drought-and-tropical storm-delayed landscape jobs and tree installations, I opted to delay moving my personal Gun Safe to my condo, until next week; instead concentrating on our Customers' needs. With already having 60-70 "donations requests" and all their requisite paperwork to deal with, I "cut-it-off" today by FAX to 7-8 np-orgs, notifying them that if there was anything left in another 7-10 days, I'd call them, but being so short-handed to do all their paperwork and tagging, I had no choice right now. Steffi, Kim and I are getting weary of this "Unending np-org Paperwork Onslaught From Hell", and it's time to finish-up what we have and take stock as to where we're at, with remaining plant material and hardgoods. I sold my beloved GC&N EZ-GO 42 Electric Golf Cart to the Red Lion School District, and they'll be over Friday to trailer it and the (six new, expensive batteries) trickle-charger, to its new home. I've had it for 4-5 years and got my money's worth from it, shuttling many wealthy, elderly Customers around the 20-acres to look at trees for purchase/installation, and show others the impressive layout of my unique Complex. I'm sure the school district will put it to good use, somewhere.
Dad left at 12:30, and my landscape crew returned from their 2 landscape/tree installation jobs at 2:15pm, so we closed at 2:45 for the day. I had 2 stops to make on the way home, grabbed a shower and checked the NWS' weather maps for the balance of the week. Looks like some serious rain for Wednesday, once again disrupting my re-scheduled schedule. Oh, well: "Mother Nature's In Charge..."

After seeing The Hunter's Moon, just after 10pm, I called it a night; Murphy was already asleep and waiting for me. I wanted to get into work before the rains came, but even getting-up at 3am wasn't going to do it, since the frontal storms were just south of the PA line, right now. I'd have to work in the rain, so I got my rain gear from the Jeep, for the morning. I was tired from staying-up so late, for me, that is. In a few weeks, that'll all be ancient history.
I slept-in until the alarm went-off at 4:15, and it had been and was still raining. NWS called for 0.89" of rain for the day, though we'd had almost 1" overnight. I took care of Murphy's water and food needs, made Fresh-Squeezed OJ, a Frittata and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee for breakfast, and quickly-scanned the other weather sites, again. Same damned forecast, everywhere. Crap; another day's work lost. All we can do is prep large container trees, for installation later in the week and next week, until it rains again.
On the way into work on Wednesday morning, I noticed that gas prices at-the-pumps, down 10-12¢/gal last week, are way up again. They're up 20¢/gal just this week, from last week's much-lowered prices. Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now up to $3.49/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $3.59/gal, Premium (92 oct) is now at $3.79/gal and Diesel has risen to $3.95/gal. It's a fricking yo-yo at the gas stations. Up, down, up down. If we'd just *drill here in America*, we could halve the price and be "energy independent like Canada is, but since 10-15 oil rigs have left the Gulf after the dirtbag, shit-for-brains, commie ∅bummer (SAMBO-IL) declared NO DRILLING for anything, that won't happen until we get rid America of the subhuman, lowlife, asshole thug punk tar-baby, in The White Crib. ∅bummer (INCOMPETENT-IL) is the main, intentional cause of America's economic problems.
I stopped for more coffee and Marlboro®s, opened-up at 7:15am in the rain, checked the rain gauge – a mere 2/10" down at the Complex, while my condo's gauge read 7/10" – and knew that we weren't going to get all that much
It's now 11am, the "Burn Pile" is winding-down, and we've just decided to move my massive 1½-ton Cannon T-65 "Tradition" Gun Safe (discontinued line) to my condo. I bagged all my rifles, shotguns and handguns and loaded them into the Jeep, leaving the copious amount of ammo, cleaning kits, scopes etc for my Friday/Saturday/Sunday's trips home, to stow all of that stuff. The weapons must be secured, first and foremost. Alan rented a heavy-duty pallet-floor-jack, so we could move the 1½-ton Gun Safe from the Main Retail Building, through the VWGH to the waiting 10-ton dumptruck, about 300ft, load and secure it, and hitch-up the JD 67B SkidLoader on the trailer, to drive 15 miles to my condo, and unload it at my garage. It's getting very hectic now, with only Kim here; Dad and Steffi have the day off, so I'll have to chain the gate for the day, when we leave. It was pouring for the last half of the drive and we and the safe were soaked by the time we'd secured it in the condo's garage. I wiped it down, plugged-in the "dry-stick", swept-out the garage, transferred all the weapons to the Cannon T-65 "Tradition" Gun Safe (discontinued line) and returned to the Complex to close-down for the day. Kim was ready to leave by the time I returned at 3:15, and Steffi would be in for the next 2 days. Kim would sub for her on the weekend. I'd had enough, and next, I have to transfer the 350,000+ rounds of ammo, and all the other myriad firearms-related gear in multiple loads in the back of the Jeep, over the next 3-5 days, and arrange it all in the Safe. Then, I'll need to get a small dehumidifier just for the garage, to keep it all dry. It's warm in there, since the garage is inside the condo, so that's not a problem. "It never ends", does it? Tired from the day, I called it a night at 8:30, since my sister Becky, had flown into town from SF, for her usual two week Fall visit, and would be staying with Mom & Dad, helping them with their medical issues, and me with a few decisions around the Complex. She's been here 21 years for our Spring Open House and Fall Clean-Up and Put-A-Way; this'll be the last and final year for both.
I got-up with a very sharp back pain, with the 4:15am alarm, watered & fed Murphy, made a quick breakfast of Fresh-Squeezed OJ – no fresh cantaloupe this year – Quaker Oats® Apples with Cinnamon and French-Roast, Turkish-Grind Coffee (from fresh, whole beans) with my Chemex® Drip System. After having pushed the 1½-ton Safe on the pallet-jack, as Alan pulled it, no wonder I had back pain again. Aspirin helped a little. I checked the weather and news sites, and saw that we were in for another on-again/off-again rainy, cold day, although we had a moderately-extensive installation/lscp maintenance job to do for some of our original Friends/Customers in nearby Glen Rock.
Actually, the aspirin wasn't working very well at all. It was too high in my back, in the right-side, mid-back area, to effectively use a cold-pak. Probably, it was just a simple "muscle strain" – I usually don't push that many heavy objects around on a daily basis, these days – and it'd go away during the day, once my back "loosened-up" with normal use and movement. Opiate-based painkillers weren't in the equation, as I'd had problems with them before. And a heating pad would only exacerbate things. I ate some more aspirin with breakfast, and left for work in the rain, around 6:30.
I stopped for more coffee and smokes, and opened-up at 7am. Still dark, very foggy and rainy, it was going to be "dicey" as to whether my 2 remaining LSCP Crew would be able to get any work done, either today or tomorrow, since heavier rains were coming our way, again. Despite the rain showers, we got the work done, postponed the delivery of a very large (5" caliper) Cleveland Select Pear (Pyrus Calleryana "Cleveland") until next week, since we need machinery to do the delivery, and in this rain, that's a potentially-dangerous operation, unlike my Gun Safe move yesterday. Dad and Becky arrived around 8:45am, after Steffi, Alan, Arthur & I had loaded another np-org's donated plant material. Another 6 calls and 3 faxes came in from additional np-orgs, requesting donations and I just
After filling-up the back cargo area of my 2002 Jeep with some 23 cases of ammo – I'm about 1/3 through the massive pile – I realized that I have to first "re-arrange half of the garage" tonight, just to stack all of it, and move a lot of "foodstuffs" now stored in the garage to the basement, for emergency "SHTF" storage. It's getting "crowded" in the garage. Actually, it gave me a chance to do some much-needed reorganization and cleaning-out. That Cannon T-65 "Tradition" Gun Safe (discontinued line in 2011) and its 350,000 rounds of ammo – now external to the Safe instead of inside it – take-up a lot more room than I'd originally thought it would.
Calls from np-orgs are still coming-in, wanting donations and as short-handed as I am, and trying to get paying Friends'/Customers' work done, they simply get put on a "waiting list", after their proper documentation – letter of request/thank-you & IRS 501(c)(3)Form – is received. Right now, I'm thinking hard about calling back Brad Smith Auctioneers, whom I talked to in early-August, and having an auction to rid myself of the remaining nursery stock, trucks, construction equipment, tools, building hardgood contents etc. It's not the most palatable way of going, but at least I'd be rid of 90% of it, and wouldn't have to worry about break-ins and damage over the Winter months, although the alarm systems/electric/phones would be operative to all surrounding police and fire personnel. I'll mull that over this weekend and decide on Monday.
After spending 2hrs cleaning-out and re-organizing the garage, it looked great. I still have a shitload of ammo and gear to bring-up to my condo over the next few days, but then as soon as it's all here, I can stow it safely inside my huge Cannon T-65 "Tradition" Gun Safe. One step-at-a-time. I like to be organized – not to the point of being "anal" about it – but organization is just one of my "strong-suits" and if/when TSHTF, it's critical to know where everything is.
The article I wrote back in July, and accompanying pictures should be out in the November issue of "State-By-State Gardening" Magazine, in November. I'll save it and post it in that week's "Journal". Definitely my last horticultural article, forever.
