When I left for work at "0-Dark-Thirty", on both Friday and Saturday mornings, the heavy frost was widespread. With no wind and zero clouds, it came down like a light snowfall, especially in the lower elevations. I did drive through some areas, where the frost hadn't settled, but they were a rarity, in comparison to the areas which got frosted. I saw many homes on the way into work, with sheets, tarps and blankets covering their (worthless) annuals/bedding plants in the gardens. (((sigh))) What a waste of time and money bedding plants and annuals are.
The northern uppermost MidWest and New England areas got hammered with 2-3ft of snow — mostly lake effects in Buffalo — and over 392,000 people were without power, with the heavy, wet snow was still coming down, as of last Friday morning. Sure glad it wasn't here in Southeast Pennsylvania. For weeks now, I've been telling my GC&N staff and landscapers that "an early Winter is coming", and I'm right, as usual. Yet, the almost always wrong (27% right) morons at the NWS (National Weather Service) predict "a mild winter for the US", as opposed to the almost always right (85% right) folks at The Farmer's Almanac, predict a severe winter. We'll revisit this in April, and see who was right. Like corrupt politicians, weather-spokesmouths are paid to lie, and receive no negative consequences for being wrong a vast majority of the time.
The past 4-5 days have been "severe clear" weather, and just perfect for getting landscape work done. Long-sleeved, flannel shits, light jackets, a fedora instead of a straw hat, LLBean 12" Hunting Boots, and windows-down, sunroof-open, while driving.
I've dropped from 249lbs to 215lbs, in a scant 5 weeks, but still have a long way to go to get back to my original weight of 175lbs. With >1,500 calories-a-day intake, the weight comes off easily, despite my intake of yummy 'adult beverages' in the evenings.
If you are a fan of Fox-TV's "24", as am I, you can pre-order Season 5's DVD. I have Season 1-2-3-4 on DVD, but only managed to record many incomplete segments of Season 5, even though my home machine's awesome TV-Tuner Card, the TVR 350, caught it all on my external Seagate 200GB HD. There were a number of network/computer glitches, and the Hauppauge TVR 350 only recorded what it was asked to do.
My DVD/CD-RW decided not to work anymore, for some reason, when I tried to watch "Band Of Brothers", "24" and some other DVDs on Saturday and Sunday. Apparently, when Jeff and I moved that piece of hardware from my condo's previous computer to the new RAID 0+1 Display, we didn't get the right software drivers to accomodate the new WinXP-Pro O/S, which was what I was running on the previous machine. My WinMediaPlayer still plays the movies I've recorded to my external Seagate 200GB HD, but DVD-CDs are MIA. I still can't figure it out. It should have worked from the git-go install. Still working on it.Whoooops, nevermind: this little $15 app/plug-in fixed it and I'm back in business watching DVDs.
I took Tuesday off, to both get some rest, and to have my left shoulder and elbow x-rayed, to see if any of the pain shows-up as physical (bone) damage. (The x-rays were negative, BTW, as I'd suspected.) It was a cold, overcast and very rainy day; my favorite for sleeping-in, as I heard constant, heavy rain on the skylights. My two condo cats — Mama Kitty and Murphy — and I, spent the entire morning wrapped-up in heavy, comfy covers, sleeping until noon. I relish my days off, after having worked 7 days a week, for the previous 15 years. I just can't do it anymore; I'm getting "burnt-out". And I have to recoup myself, for if I don't, I'll simply be a 'shell' of my former-self. That prospect isn't pleasant at all, IMO.
The power and phones went dead here, around 3:15pm on Tuesday, and didn't come back on until 5:20pm, I'm guessing from some schmuck slid his/her car off the road and hit a telephone pole with a transformer/power and telephone lines on it, and blacked-out the entire East York area. It was, I'd guess, like living in the turd-world shithole called Baghdad, with only a few hours of electricity a day, despite what our brave, heroic US Military is doing to improve their pathetic lives. And no thanks to the muslim-islamic-arab terrorists, who constantly blow-up power stations to sabotage those positive efforts and rebuilding the country. I had plenty of candles and flashlights, so I was well-prepared, as I am for the coming Winter months. ASt 5:58pm, Met-Ed Co, our local power company, called with a pre-recorded message, explaining the outage and saying they were trying to determine the exact cause. Good PR move, IMO.
