the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has spent more than $39 million on obese lesbians, origami condoms, texting drunks, and dozens of other projects that could have been scrapped in favor of developing an Ebola vaccine.

“Frankly, if we had not gone through our 10-year slide in research support, we probably would have had a vaccine in time for this that would’ve gone through clinical trials and would have been ready,” said NIH Director Francis Collins, blaming budget cuts for his agency’s failure to develop a vaccine for the deadly virus.
However, the Washington Free Beacon has uncovered $39,643,352 worth of NIH studies within the past several years that have gone to questionable research.
For instance, the agency has spent $2,873,440 trying to figure out why lesbians are obese, and $466,642 on why fat girls have a tough time getting dates. Another $2,075,611 was spent encouraging old people to join choirs.
Millions have gone to “text message interventions,” including a study where researchers sent texts to drunks at the bar to try to get them to stop drinking. The project received an additional grant this year, for a total of $674,590.
The NIH is also texting older African Americans with HIV ($372,460), HIV and drug users in rural areas ($693,000), HIV smokers ($763,519), pregnant smokers ($380,145), teen moms ($243,839), and meth addicts ($360,113). Text message interventions to try to get obese people to lose weight have cost $2,707,067.
The NIH’s research on obesity has led to spending $2,101,064 on wearable insoles and buttons that can track a person’s weight, and $374,670 to put on fruit and vegetable puppet shows for preschoolers.
A restaurant intervention to develop new children’s menus cost $275,227, and the NIH spent $430,608 for mother-daughter dancing outreach to fight obesity.
Sexual minorities have received a substantial amount from the NIH. The agency has now spent $105,066 following 16 schizophrenic LGBT Canadians around Toronto for a study on their community experiences.
The total for a project on why gay men get syphilis in Peru is now $692,697 after receiving additional $228,425 this year. The NIH is also concerned about postpartum depression in “invisible sexual minority women,” with a study that has cost $718,770.
Millions went to develop “origami condoms,” in male, female, and anal versions. The inventor Danny Resnic, who received $2,466,482 from the NIH, has been accused of massive fraud for using grant money for full-body plastic surgery in Costa Rica and parties at the Playboy mansion.
How "transwomen" use Facebook is the subject of another NIH study worth $194,788.
The agency has also committed $5 million to “mine and analyze” social media to study American’s attitudes toward drug abuse, and $306,900 to use Twitter for surveillance on depressed people.
The NIH has also spent $15,313,372 on cessation studies devoted to every kind of smoker imaginable. Current studies are targeted at American Indians ($2,899,954); Chinese and Vietnamese men ($424,875); postmenopausal women ($4,151,850); the homeless ($558,576);Korean youth ($94,580); young schizophrenics ($397,802); Brazilian women smokers ($955,368);Latino HIV-positive smokers($471,530); and the LGBT community ($2,364,521).
Yale University is studying how to get “Heavy Drinkers” to stop smoking at a cost of $571,799. Other projects seek to use Twitter to provide “social support to smokers” ($659,469), and yoga ($1,763,048) as a way to quit.
An NIH project studying sighs cost taxpayers $53,282.
On Tuesday, Health and Human Services (HHS) had to outsource efforts at an Ebola vaccine to the Baltimore-based Profectus BioSciences Inc. The company will receive $8.6 million to research and test their vaccine, a fraction of NIH funding that went to the above projects.

A Day In The Life
I was awake and up at 5:30 on Friday morning, and no garbage truck noise within earshot. Just some SHTF dreams about... well, nevermind. I made OJ and while coffee, checked email, the weather and news sites; same-o, same-o. 52°F and sunny by 7:30am, and the Nor'easter was long gone into the Atlantic. The recycling garbage trucks finally came by around 8:30; I guess the rain delayed them, too. 2¾" in the rain gauge. They'll all be in for a rude surprise this Winter, when the snow and ice cause even more havoc in this region than last Winter. I had a pile of bills to get ready for payment, so I stayed-in running BR envelopes thru the printer (yes, I still pay by check) and doing other paperwork. Dad had some medical appointments, so I couldn't start on some of his projects until he's there. 64°F and sunny. So I bundled-up, and went out for a long 2hr walk down thru the Township Park, and across Rt-24 to the York Galleria, and back home by 2pm.
I made a late breakfast of Scrapple, Homefries, Toast & Sunny-Side-Up Eggs, and more coffee. I could feel the temps
I finished watching around 12:30am, closed down and went up to sleep. I need to get started on Dad's list of winterizing his home and property first; Becky's next; the GC&N Complex third, and my place last. The next 2-3 weeks will be busier as Winter approaches.
I slept-in until 8:15 on Saturday morning, turned-up the heat on a 49°F start to the day, made OJ and coffee, had Soft-Boiled Eggs w/ Toast in a bowl, and checked the weather, news and email. It'd be a good day to get some of Dad's outdoor things done and off his list; I left at 9:30.
1,250ft of garden hose to coil-up, in 50ft & 100ft lengths and store; 2 massive terracotta urns for ornamental grasses to be emptied, grasses composted and urns moved inside for the Winter; 4 electric garage door tracks and lifts lubed with Lithium Grease; the non-attached garage cleaned-out and reorganized; plans made for Tue/Wed, when the ground's dried-out, for re-burying 15-20ft of drip irrigation pipe which had popped-up thru the mulch, over the Summer months. I had to fabricate some new sod pins from house coat hangars to secure them down below grade. Always something. I'll get to Becky's garage door track on Monday, when I drop-off her groceries. I still have my Condo's garage door and a security check/lightbulb change to do at the Old GC&N Complex.
After a few stops, I got back home around 12:45pm, made a Pit Roast Beef Sandwich & Fries, and strawberry ice cream, and went out for a short walk. I must have said goodbyes to 10-11 neighbors closing their condos down for the coming Winter, and leaving for the Gold Coast of Florida, where they also have condos to Winter-over-in. Life is good for them. They usually return in late April/early May, after the snow & ice have retreated.
I watched 3 movies, while working on some paperwork and adding to my food shopping list: Blue Ridge Bloodshed (44:05), and NatGeo's "Southern Justice Mountain Manhunt" (44:10), and NatGeo's Dirty Money" (44;10). All pretty decent movies. By 12:30am, I was tired, closed down, armed-up, and hit the sack.
Sunday was another sleep-in morning, until 7:45am. While coffee was steeping, I made OJ and an English Muffin w/ Sweet Orange Preserves, checked the weather, news and email. My front walk and porch were under 1-2ft or oak leaves, so I grabbed the leaf rake I'd borrowed from Dad yesterday, and pulled them out and away from the gardens, on to the lawn area. That damned tree provides shade and privacy, but in a 30ft x 40ft yard, it's way out of place. There's still 90% of the leaves to drop, and more will come down in the early Spring, as the new growth pushes-out and knocks tens-of-thousands more old leaves all over the freshly-growing gardens and lawn. A friend (and former GC&N customer) from White Hall, MD, called at 2pm to ask me to come down and help him lay-out a new shooting range at his family's 80ac farm. His neighbor had a CAT C-4 Bulldozer available, and he wanted to cut-in a 4-lane pistol/rifle range, for up to 300yds. I drove down and we spent an hour going over a scale drawing he'd made on a twp plot plan of the property, making a few changes, and then watching as his neighbor began moving earth. Back home well after dark, I grabbed a quick Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich, and by 8pm I was listening to the evening's streaming Gun Talk Radio Network Show, while I followed the thread on this site, until 11pm. I felt groggy from eating so late; time for some sleep. Frost advisory overnight and tomorrow. Food shopping tomorrow for Dad, Becky & myself. Locking down and arming. Nite!
Up at 7am on Monday, it was a very chilly 31°F start, and a sunny low-60s day ahead, so some heat was priority one. Definitely overnight frost in the high and low-lying areas. I had coffee, fresh OJ and rye toast. After checking my food shopping lists, I left at 9:30am for Weis Market, in East York. It took 35-40mins to get thru 3 lists, check-out and load the Jeep. I dropped-off Becky's and Dad's Gas/diesel prices at the pump, have dropped another 4¢, since just Saturday, October 25th: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now at $3.05/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is at $3.15/gal, Premium (93 oct) now at $3.35/gal, with Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 also dropping to $3.65/gal. groceries, worked on a computer glitch for him, planned a trip to Hanover Architectural Stone to order the needed matching pavers from his front walk's leftovers, for the upcoming rear sidewalk job. There's ~100 SqFt leftover, so I ordered another 93 SqFt (cube) just to be sure we'd have what's needed. Better to have some leftovers than run out before the job is completed. I was back home by 11:45am, unpacked my stuff, had some re-heated pizza and potato salad, took a handful of aspirin for my aching left hip, and relaxed for a while.
I listened to Rush for a couple hours, went out for an hour's walk in the warm sun to exercise my hip, and it improved greatly after the Bayer® 325mg Aspirin, and some rest. Back by 5pm, I raked 18" of oak leaves off my porch and walk, a small fraction of what's to drop, and will try to keep up with it before Winter arrives. Shoveling wet leaves mixed-in with snow, isn't fun. Getting rid of the tree would be optimum; I'll have to give it some serious thought before Spring arrives. Heh. I downloaded the morning's missed 3hr Chris Plante Show WMAL (DC) Podcast, and listened while writing out checks for bills, and doing some online inter-bank transfers at my personal institution. By 6pm, the usual evening Mark Levin Show came on until 9pm. The navel oranges, tangerines and clementines I've been getting for the past 2-3 weeks have been absolute crap; Florida and California are "between crops" and the sub-standard fruit is coming in from Europe
7:00am came too early on Tuesday; I shouldn't have watched that last movie, last night. 20-20 hindsight. A cool 40°F, sunny start with record high (low-80s) temps forecast, I gave the furnace a quick burst to take the chill off, made some OJ and coffee and had rye toast. The weather, news and email were not DefCon-1, so I left at 9:30am for Dad's to get the sidewalk pavers ordered. Today is the "3rd anniversary" of Dad, Mom and me closing our Family Garden Center & Nursery Business, after almost 22 years, on Friday, October 28th, at 5pm. Truly a sad day. The buildings'/greenhouses' contents auction followed on December 17th. Meh.
Pavers ordered and paid for, we dove around york for a while, got back to Dad's around 11, worked on a couple quick projects, and I left to get some errands done. I kept getting robo-calls from Rite Aid about Rxs being ready, which were actually ready and picked-up last week, so I called them back. Appears that a computer command was entered incorrectly for their whole notification system in this area, and a LOT of people were getting redundant calls. I stopped by Home Depot to get a can of Lithium Grease, and when I walked in, I was stunned: CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS, MUSIC, COSTUMES ON EMPLOYEES... and it's not even Halloween... it's not even Thanksgiving... it's nowhere near Christmas! FTS! ARRRRRRRGH! I left and went to Auto-Zone and got the grease. High for the day was 82°F, breaking the 1984 Gas/diesel prices at the pump, have dropped another 2¢, since Monday, October 27th: Unleaded Regular (87 oct) is now $3.03/gal, Unleaded Premium (89oct) is $3.13/gal, Premium (93 oct) is $3.33/gal, with Diesel Fuel/Kerosene K-2 dropping to $3.63/gal. record of 80° in Harrisburg. BFD. Back home, I made a Classic BLT, Chicken Corn Soup, did paperwork, listened to Rush, raked leaves in the front garden, downloaded the morning's missed 3hr Chris Plante Show WMAL (DC) Podcast, and the Mark Levin Show came on until 8pm, when the World Series Game #3 came on: KC Royals v SF Giants. It was a blowout: 10-0, Royals. I'm not a "sports fan" – haven't been for many, many years – so I don't know why I stayed-up and watched it. 11:45pm, and time for some sleep.
Some weird dream woke me at 4am on Wednesday, and there wasn't a chance that I could get back to sleep. With OJ and coffee, I made Scrapple, Homefries, Eggs & Toast, checked the usual email, news and weather sites, and heard the rain start around 8am. Crap, in addition to sharply-dropping temps, there's a possibility of snow this weekend. In this region, "pumpkin snow" isn't unusual. We had a small one here in 2011; 3-4", and the Northeast got clobbered with 25-40". I had paperwork and filing to get done, so I stayed home for the day and finished most of it. Temps outside were only in the low-60s, and with the rain, dropped quickly into the lower 50s.
I brewed more coffee, to compensate for the 4am start. After a generous Classic BLT w/ Avocado and a Schweppes Ginger Ale, Rush was on from 12-3, I replayed the 3hr Chris Plante Show WMAL (DC) Podcast until 6pm, the Mark Levin Show was on until 8pm, until the World Series Game #7 came on: KC Royals v SF Giants. Damn, Giants win 3-2. I had a Christmas Wreath to load into the Jeep for Dad's front door, and my measuring wheel to re-check the rear walk's measurements v Alan's calculated numbers, tomorrow. I have a feeling I screwed-up somehow with the exact SqFt measurements. By 7pm, temps were in the mid-40s, and dropping. I called Dad and made plans to go over around 10am, and I needed to get to the nearby Weis Gas 'n Go to use my accumulated 60pts for a fill-up, and a few things at the next door Weis Market, both in West York. Approaching midnight, it was time to get some sleep. I closed down, armed the condo, and went upstairs.
Up at 5am, no weird dreams and a nice day ahead. 37°F, and sunny by 7:15. I had Del Monte® Red Grapefruit Sections, coffee and an English Muffin w/ Blueberry Preserves, saving my appetite for lunch. Email was very light, the weather sites forecasting a dire Winter ahead, and same-o, same-o news. I left for the Weis Market in West York, their gas station, a stop at Dad's and some errands. That Weis Market in West York is amazing with it size and selection, as compared to the smaller Weis in East York. I bought way too much stuff, did the errands and stopped at Dad's to re-measure the back sidewalk; I was wrong and Alan was right. The Christmas wreath and over-the-door-hangar was a real tight fit, so we wired it to the door knocker instead; looks great and works just fine. I was back home by 12:45pm.
After unpacking the groceries, I made a Bacon Cheddar-Cheeseburger w/ Fries, a Mediterranean Pasta Salad and had a Ginger Ale, and listened to Rush while relaxing. The Chris Plante (WMAL-DC) Podcast was unavailable – all day it appears – so I went out for an hour's walk, until my left hip started hurting, and then headed back home to get some aspirin. The Mark Levin Show was on from 6-9pm, but I broke away to try to find the Thursday Night NFL Football Game; seems that crap is only now available on PPV (pay-per-view), on NFL.com TV, whatever that is. Screw it, I watched a few "Alaska State Troopers" episodes, and quit for the night at 11:45pm.
Tomorrow starts a new week for the "Journal", and with Dad's sidewalk pending, that's what I'm turning my full attention to, before Winter interrupts and the project become either frozen-out or buried under 1-3ft of snow. Hells bells, it's snowing tonite in the Upper Midwest, and moving eastward to us. And we have another nor'Easter moving up the East Coast, which'll make the convergence of these storms an interesting event for the Halloween Weekend. I've got some small projects I didn't even get to start, leftover from last week, and if I can, will do them. Plus, my condo's garden needs a Fall cleaning/Winter prep, and I'll get to that. Winter'll be here sooner than most realize.

Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia are going through the worst Ebola outbreak in history and health officials believe that it has killed more than 700 people there. Now, for the first time, Ebola has "officially" entered the United Sates via two health aid workers, that contracted the disease while working in Africa, where the Ebola outbreak continues.
Ebola virus disease (EVD), originally known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a severe, and often times (70-90%) fatal disease in humans. Case fatality can be up to 90 percent – in other words, 90 out of every 100 people who catch Ebola die. EVD outbreaks typically occur in remote villages in Central and West Africa and are transmitted via wild animals (such as fruit bats) to humans.
The first patient landed in the United States on Saturday, August 2, 2014. Dr. Kent Brantly was then flown from Africa to the United States and then transported via ambulance to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. The second person, Nancy Whitebol, will return to the U.S. in the coming days. Many people are questioning the decision to bring the two American aid workers to the United States to be treated. According to the New York Times, Dr. Bruce S. Ribner, an infectious disease specialist at Emory and who will be caring for these patients, said, "The reason we are bringing these

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs. It is called the Center of Military History. It is located 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C., at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building itself is very nondescript.
But behind a series of highly alarmed doors and long, cement, camera-laden hallways. It is the highly sophisticated, climate-controlled treasure room where the army keeps its most precious artifacts.
The facility was built for $24 million in 2010. The cavernous warehouse is typically shrouded in total darkness. Motion lights illuminate only the areas in which someone is walking.
If I could get tickets, I'd fork over my first-born child. Oh wait; I don't have one. Heh. I'd go there in a heartbeat.
Some People Just Need Killing
