some on the left are proposing the elimination of currency bills larger than $10. This may seem like an insignificant matter, but if adopted, the proposal would be a giant step in the direction of totalitarianism.
By forcing Americans to use an electronic means of payment, government would gain the power to monitor and manipulate every aspect of one's finances. Washington would know what you buy, where and when you buy it, where you travel and eat, and whom you associate with. Granting government this kind of power is madness unless you're one of the political elite. They seem to be lining up in favor of a cashless society.
In a recent article, "The Sinister Side of Cash," Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff argued the case for drastically reducing the supply of cash currency – eliminating all bills above $10 and thereby forcing consumers and businesses to rely on electronic exchange. Rogoff claims that his plan would reduce money-laundering and thereby reduce crime while at the same time exposing tax cheats who deal in cash payments.
The elimination of large bills would also have the "advantage" of further enabling the central bankers to manipulate interest rates since holders of electronic funds could be more easily pressured by negative interest rates and other central bank schemes. Holding cash in a money market fund would produce a loss under negative rates; holding cash would not.
In light of recent fiscal history, the argument that a cashless society would grant more power to the Federal Reserve to control the economy seems laughable. Negative rates as now practiced in most of Europe and in Japan have hardly shown themselves to be effective. Rather, they have facilitated the refusal of large economies to engage in meaningful economic and political reform.
As I see it, Rogoff's argument for a cashless society is nothing less than creepy. As Rogoff himself admits, eliminating the supply of cash would raise privacy issues since information about electronic transactions can easily be recorded and stored. Beyond that, the very "advantages" that Rogoff lists should be a matter of deep concern. Taken together, the potential for government abuse is practically unlimited.
Consider the idea that eliminating the ubiquitous $100 bill would reduce crime. Only an Ivy League academic could believe such a thing. Criminals can easily shift from U.S. cash to euros, yen, or other currencies or to alternative currencies such as bitcoin. Reducing the supply of cash in circulation might inconvenience the mafia, but it won't shut them down.
Then there is the so-called advantage that eliminating large bills would allow the IRS and state treasuries to collect taxes on more of the transactions in the gray economy. Anyone who believes that government needs more revenue – as much as $700 billion annually by Rogoff's estimate – is off base to begin with. Government revenues need to be reduced by 90%, not increased by another 20%. The goal should be the elimination of the IRS, not the granting of more power to it.
One can argue, as did CNBC in 2013, that the only thing the Obama economy has going for it is the gray market, without which America would have been in deep recession these past eight years. Taxing that $2-trillion market out of existence is the last thing we need. The guys mowing your yard and doing odd jobs don't need the IRS fishing through their electronic payment records. Nor do those who provide child care services or the families that run small retail outlets.
A rational proposal would be the elimination of all taxes on enterprises of this sort. Exempting small businesses from taxation would spur an explosion in economic growth. Not only would businesses have more money to re-invest, but they would be spared the wasted effort of recordkeeping or the fear of prosecution.
Tax cuts targeting small businesses in Kansas and other states prove how effective cuts can be. Cutting an estimated $4.5 billion over six years beginning in 2012, Kansas has already begun to grow nonfarm jobs faster than neighboring Missouri, though as the Tax Foundation points out, small businesses are simply businesses that have not yet become large. Why not eliminate or greatly reduce taxes on all businesses?
The left's idea of a cashless society would not cut taxes for anyone. It would raise them, concentrating more power in government. That power would make possible further assaults on the free market.
Most importantly, there is the matter of privacy and the threat to our liberties posed by a cashless society. That's a topic that proponents of a cashless society are loath to examine. Maybe I have a legitimate reason for not wanting an electronic record of all of my transactions. Maybe my reason is not legit. It doesn't matter. I have the right to live my life free from government surveillance.
That right is guaranteed under the Fourth Amendment: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated[.] "Papers, and effects" includes currency – and government has no right to force an accounting of those "effects" by eliminating a practical means of cash transactions.
Make no mistake: government will always abuse the powers citizens cede to it. Government has already stepped vastly beyond its constitutional limits. The Obama administration has not even made a pretense of constitutionality for many of its executive actions. The elimination of cash currency would be another large step, along with repeal of the Second Amendment, in the direction of totalitarianism.
Kenneth Rogoff is a respected economist who has written well about many aspects of the economy, but on the cashless society, he is simply wrong. Granting government more power to increase surveillance, raise taxes, and manipulate interest rates isn't much of an argument for eliminating large bills. Just the opposite, in fact. The Treasury needs to make sure there are plenty of $100s in circulation just to keep the economy rolling.

A Day In The Life
I slept-in until 8:30 on Friday morning, had OJ, made coffee and checked the weather and news. 58°F, partly cloudy and very nice. Garbage trucks rolling thru at 10. High Court Says Black Men May Have Legitimate Reason To Flee Police, and Mispronouncing Student’s Name Now a "Microaggression". Meh; the world's still a screwed-up mess. I made easy Ham and Egg Crepe Squares, and filled-up on coffee.
When down in Southern York County yesterday, I noticed that all the field corn is ready to harvest, as is the first soybean crop, the dogwoods have turned color, and the maples are following. Despite the relentless drought, the shallower-rooted trees and plants are still green, because they can quickly access the infrequent t-storms' paltry rainfall. After a late lunch of PA Dutch Chicken Pot Pie, with lots of mayo, I watched Food Network's Triple D marathon, skipped the evening news crap, and a few more episodes of God, Guns & Automobiles, until 12-midnight. Lights out.
Up at 7am on Saturday, I grabbed some OJ, made coffee and scanned the weather and news sites. "Hunt on for gunman who killed 5, including 4 women, at Washington mall". Jeeeez, people are surprised this is happening. Years ago, after 9-11, I said in these pages, that this shit was coming and we'd better get ready for it. "Asymmetrical warfare against soft targets", and it's been happening for 10-11 years. The enemy's inside the gates, and we're bring more of the subhumans in. $10 says it's another moslem POS. We have a national death wish. WTH.
For lunch, I made Jumbo Lump Maryland Crab Cakes w/ Hollandaise Sauce, and some 'experimental' Potato Pancakes w/ Bacon & Cheese, which turned out amazingly well. I subbed Cream Cheese for Sour Cream, and that did the trick. 3hrs of time trials and qualifying for the NASCAR Bad Boy Off Road 300 at New Hampshire Speedway, was on for tomorrow's race, the American Pickers Marathon was in-progress, and I watched Bering Sea Gold "Backseat Diver" and God, Guns & Automobiles "Shine On", and bagged it at 11.
Sleeping-in until 9:30am on Sunday, I couldn't get over how (((cool))) it felt in the condo; 62°F inside and 51°F outside. Fall might finally be here; Wintry weather in the Rockies is a good sign. With V8 and coffee, I checked the weather and news sites. They finally caught the moslem filth punk, who murdered 5 at the mall; IMO, put a bullet thru his subhuman goat-humping head, and throw the carcass to the buzzards and maggots. And Malmo Sweden gets another dose of murderous moslem shit, too.
I started loads of laundry, worked in the front garden to do some clean-up of dead plant material, made a Grilled Cheese w/ Ham Sandwich & Potato Salad, and while going thru some mail and paperwork, met with one of the CHCA E-Board Officers about next week's Annual Meeting, noticed that the day's high was only 71°F, watched the 3hr NASCAR Bad Boy Off-Road 300 at New Hampshire Speedway, reruns of an American Pickers in-progress Marathon and closed out the night with History's America's 9/11 Flag: Rise From the Ashes show. Lights out.
A weird dream woke me on Monday morning: Dad and I were hiking on the York County Rail Trail – I have no idea why – and George W Bush drove by in a golf cart, with his black Stetson cowboy hat flying off his head, and we retrieved it to return it to him, on an endless loop. First dream I remembered in a long time. I got some OJ, made coffee, and checked email, which wasn't working on my desktop; just giving me annoying "server error" messages. No sending or receiving anything. No, my 2014 Samsung Rugby 4 (AT&T) Flip Phone doesn't have email, texting or Net access; they're disabled. Crap. I scanned the weather and news. 58°F and rain forecast; we didn't get a drop, so far. It's all to the west of us.
The fucked-up screwed-up media asshats were so preoccupied with transgender man gives birth to his OWN BABY in world first – trust me, that wasn't a "man" if there was an actual birth; only women do that – and the media morons were shitting their shorts over Hitlery's dwarf podium for tonite's debate, that they all but ignored the 9 people shot in Houston. And, Iowa's floating down the river.
I went out at 9:30 to visit Dad, get the weekend's mail, run some errands and was back before 12noon. I made Bacon Double Cheeseburger Grilled Cheese Sandwich and a bowl of Lobster Bisque, worked on paperwork from the mail, and wrote checks for the condo and gdnctr utilities bills. The property and school tax bills payments #2, are right around the corner. I laid down, and took a short snooze until 7, watched the American Pickers Marathon in-progress until "The Debate", at 9 on FBC (Fox Business Channel).
Net net: Despite what this guy says, and despite what some of the morning-after polls showed, he lost to the commie, socialist, anti-American, lying, hate-filled, smarmy Clintonoid bitch. He lost on points, not on a knockout. He started out strong, but then she baited him with trivial stuff, he got flustered, emotional, defensive, was often incoherent on the topics and rambling, missed so many opportunities to nail her on her crimes, and he got down-in-the-weeds on too many things, for the next 90 mins. It was obvious he wasn't prepared and probably didn't rehearse very much. Clinton was catered-to by the liberal, left-wing mulatto moderator, Lester "Step-&-Fetchit" Holt, as expected. Another wasted opportunity in front of 80-90 MILLION people, worldwide. That said, I don't think it will hurt him, but it was not a good performance. After listening to the talking heads' recap, I checked email – still not working – bagged it at 12-midnight. And the rains finally arrived with a vengeance.
I got up at 8am on Tuesday, had OJ and made coffee, and checked the news and weather. 61°F and the night's t-storm clouds were starting to clear. I re-checked the email, and it was still AWOL; still can't receive or send. I unplugged both the Cisco Linksys DPC3008 DOCSIS v3.0 Cable Modem and Cisco RVS4000 4-port Gigabit Security Router: VPN, and replugged them. Nothing; just "error messages". I opened-up their software's tech sections, checked the outgoing/incoming port numbers against my tech sheet for both pieces of hardware, reset, rebooted them and my Win-7 Pro x64 computer, and still no email on either my GDNCTR or Comcast accounts. Damn. I called Comcast, and they scheduled a tech repair visit for tomorrow morning.

I made Soft-Boiled Eggs w/ Toast In a Bowl for breakfast, and streamed the Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12. A Black Moon is set to rise on Friday; looks like a simple eclipse to me.
No errands today, as I have some left hip pain from that pesky 7/14/1975 .32cal bullet. Bayer® 325mg Aspirin and rest helps a lot. With the windows and screened doors open, the day's cool breeze was wonderful. I watched all episodes of Discovery's Sacred Steel Bikes, and Seasons 1 & 2 of History's Down East Dickering, checked email again – still AWOL – and quit for the night at 12-midnight.
At midnight on Friday, September 30th – hey, that's TONIGHT – America loses all control of the InterNet, which we invented, through the ICANN hand-over to a shitpile of corrupt, 3rd world countries, including China. Get ready for it, as it's a done deal under 0sambo boy. It's illegal, but the cowardly, corrupt US Congress won't stop the treasonous activity.
Up at 6:30 on Wednesday morning, I grabbed OJ and coffee, had some rye toast and scanned the weather and news sites, and tried email once again. Nothing. The Comcast tech was scheduled to be here between 9-12noon, so maybe this problem will get fixed. I streamed the Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, until 11, and the tech guy arrived. He simply replaced the old v2.5 CM with a new Cisco Linksys DPC3008 DOCSIS v3.0 Cable Modem, and the problem was gone. He said it should have been done 6-8 months ago, but "somehow slipped thru the cracks". Both email addys were back in service by 11:30, and I had a LONG queue of mail to catch-up on.
Read what FBI Director Comey said, in this morning's Congressional Hearings, about muzzie-islamic terrorist fighters spreading throughout the world, "...in the next two to five years like we've never seen before". Get ready; it's only just beginning. I said this was coming, years ago, and now it's happening. Soon, it'll get much. much worse, as the Feral Gov't lets in millions from the ME and other 3rd World hellholes, and America becomes "Balkanized" and neutered by 2nd Amendment "Control Laws".
For a late lunch, I had Cheese-Filled Ravioli and a bowl of Tomato Soup, and began working on writing property tax checks for the CONDO and GDNCTR 2nd Payment. Dad stopped by for a visit at 3pm, and his landscape company called to review with me some dead plant replacements for now and for next Spring. Although it was only 68°F, the humidity was high and the forecast rain arrived around 5. So did the ***FLOOD WATCH*** and a forecast of 4-5" on the wetness, which we desperately need. It would continue into Saturday, and lower temps would stay.
After finishing-up the tax checks, I watched the American Pickers Marathon, already was in-progress, until ABC's Designated Survivor, "First Day" S1-E2, came on at 10. I could hear the unrelenting torrential rain on my condo's 4 skylights, as I switched-over to unseen Down East Dickering episodes, until 12:30am. Lights out.
I slept-in until 8:30 on Thursday morning, got up to heavy rain, had some OJ, made coffee and tried shake the cobwebs. Scanning the weather and news, a ***FLOOD WARNING*** was now posted on area weather websites, and if you're living in a flood plain, it sucks to be you over the next couple of days. I streamed the Chris Plante Show on WMAL/DC, 9-12, while having the last of the last couple of Jumbo Lump Maryland Crab Cakes w/ Hollandaise Sauce, and Hash Brown Home Fries. Well, we're still losing control of the InterNet, with only one day to go, and a new IRS Scam has been unleashed on the public.
TSHTF happened much earlier in the morning, with a Hoboken trainwreck that permanently ruined one woman's everyday forever, and made a mess out of 118 other lives. Sad day.
I went out for a couple hours to my current realtor's nearby offices, to have a chat about our future, and then off to a few stop. Back by 6:30, I watched Down East Dickering "Mantiques Roadshow" S2-E3, and the Vegas Rat Rods Season 1 & 2 Marathon, until 11;30. Time for some shut-eye.
Tomorrow/Friday starts a new week, and it looks like my Sister will have a rough one, with a knee replacement on Wednesday, and a long recuperation and rehab period afterward. Dad and I will do what's needed to help her get thru it. I've been doing her food shopping in excess, for the past 2-3mos, to get her stocked-up for this knee op. Otherwise I'm clear for some food shopping, for myself and dad, if he needs it. He still enjoys doing his own. There's also an eye dr app't, to check the final "floater" in my right eye, and if it's gone, I plan to ease back into firearms on a more regular basis. I owe some friends some shooting time, which I had to bail on after the floaters appearedalsmot 2yrs ago.
Conundrum.
The very definition of the word conundrum is "something that is puzzling or confusing". Here are six conundrums today, in the US:
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it. That pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st century. Kind of makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL moslems by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works. And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it. And last but not least...
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to all illegal aliens?

Obama: "Entrepreneurs Don't Build Businesses"
"Last week, President Barack Obama delivered some telling remarks to a fire station full of people in Roanoke, Virginia. I'll save you the trouble of reading the (long and uninspired) speech and provide you with the most interesting part:
"If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." – President Barack Obama, July 13th, 2012.
It would be easy to respond with something along the lines of, "Somebody else made that happen? Who? Who magically imagined the product or service, started the business, built it up, and created the jobs? Who was it? The tooth fairy?" And to some extent, President Obama's statement is so ridiculous as to merit that sort of quick, flippant response.

However, he's not entirely wrong. This reminds me of an argument that Massachusetts Senate Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren would probably make. If he's talking about a mid-sized or large business, where an entrepreneur has hired additional employees, then at that point the business's success isn't purely that of its founder.
Employees add value to a business through work and ideas. That's why you hire employees, after all. Steve Jobs didn't invent every last detail of the phones, computers, and tablets to come out of Apple over the last decade. There were engineers working on those products who developed them. So, employees help entrepreneurs to build their business. "Somebody else" did indeed play a part in making that happen.
But what makes the president's remarks so inane is the totality of what he's saying. He's not saying that entrepreneurs and employees work together to build a business. It's not a collaborative effort. It's all thanks to the employees. Usually, I can understand the way the president's mind works on most issues by examining it through a pragmatic, liberal, or progressive framework. This one baffles me.
As I explained, I can see that he has some of a point, but he's still just obviously wrong on the broader point. Sure, the employees help to build the business, but the business itself wouldn't exist without the entrepreneur. So, to say to entrepreneurs and to business owners, "...you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," is just wrong. It's silly. They did build that by setting the foundation for the business.
Entrepreneurs are almost always the hardest workers in their business. They work a simply insane number of hours to get their idea off the ground. If they succeed (and they face a tremendous risk if they don't), then they'll start to grow and to hire employees to help. Honestly, if I were an entrepreneur and I read those remarks by the president, I would be furious. It's a tremendous insult to the true job-creators in America, entrepreneurs.
In the context of a long, somewhat rambling campaign speech that touched on every issue under the sun, it may seem as though I'm over-exaggerating the importance of a minor thing he said. But President Obama isn't a stupid man, or even one who makes off-the-cuff remarks he doesn't really mean. He's a very smart man, and he meant what he said.
When the most important issues for most Americans are economic growth and job creation, I believe it's essential to know exactly where both candidates stand on the importance of entrepreneurs.
