Summer 'subtly returned' (as a thrown brick), last mid-week with low-80s and high humidity. After 5-6 days of daytime 60s and nighttime 40s, the 80s sucked. I'm sick of the drought and heat/humidity, and really-welcomed the Fall temps, though I've had the heat on in my condo in the mornings at 6am, while feeding the cats and making coffee. Giant combines are taking-down tens-of-thousands of acres of browned-off feed corn, and the same acreage of yellowed soybeans, for sale overseas. The long-range forecast calls for 5-7°F temps, above normal, for the next 2-3mos, and appreciably-lower-than-normal rainfall, over the same period. True, peaches, apples, pears, grapes and most other stonefruit are smaller, but hugely-sweeter, due to the drought. Ahhhhhh, "The Drought of '07". Like the droughts of '02 — '06, too?
My condo's Net connection's email went south on Thursday morning, as ComCast/AT&T's fiber-toptic backbone went south. My numerous browsers — Netscape v9.03b, IEv7.0, Opera v9.2, Firefox v2.0 — worked just fine-and-dandy, and my ISP then verified the nationwide problem: ComCast/AT&T's billion-dollar, fiber-optic backbone went "missing". Repairs were underway, re-routing of Net traffic was being done, and within an hour, all was 'back to normal', by the time I'd gotten into work. By the time I got home, around 5:30pm, Comcast was back up and running. Such is life in the IT world, I guess.
The "Drought From Hell" continues and is getting worse, and despite my once-a-year 25% Off Fall Sale is closing-in on the end of September, I'll most likely extend it into October, with the hopes that the Fall rains soon get here and relieve the dustbowl we're living in. There is no significant rainfall in the 14-day forecast, and I'm concerned that the casualties will be many in the Spring, as stressed-out plants just won't survive the Winter months, without a modicum of moisture at their root levels. The 2007-2008 Farmer's Almanac predicts we have a "bad Winter coming", out here in the Mid-Atlantic Region. FYI.
On Saturday, a customer from nearby Crossroads (PA) came in, and said he's been invaded by 1" long, European Hornets, which I'd never heard of. But after some research, I found that they can do considerable damage to trees in August and September. I'll keep you updated on the "European Hornets" scenario, as I check the nursery fields for damage to the thousands of trees.

The cooler, drier air came back briefly, with the passage of a cold-front on Friday and I'm enjoying not having to run my AC at work or at home, for a couple of days. But we need ***RAIN*** in the worst way, as all moisture has been long 'cooked-out of the soils', and everything is suffering, terribly. Despite the JSGC&N-mandated Drip Irrigation Systems for every LSCP installation, plants are suffering under heat stress, as ground and air temps are unduly-high and destructive, and they're either going dormant or many are dying. Sad commentary, to be sure. It's much worse this year, than in any previous year which I can remember or document.
I closed down the GC&N's 5'x12' tomato garden, on Tuesday, pulled all the declining vines and undeveloped, green fruits for the compost pile, turned-over the soil and enjoyed the season's last hybrid 4-5" 'Beefsteak' tomato of the season, with mayo, salt & pepper, on rye. Mmmmm, good.
I've talked to a few of my GC&N's neighbors this week, about how their water supplies are holding-up, during the ongoing Drought From Hell, and the unanimous replay was: not good. Their properties' creeks/streams and springs have dried-up — first time in their memory of the past 25yrs — and their well(s) are running-down frequently, and are taking much longer to "re-charge" before re-use. Although I have 8 wells — with 6 in constant usage and 2 in reserve — I've had to cut my drip irrigation zone (12 zones on 20ac) times by 35%, to avoid running-down the system, and waiting 20-30mins for the re-charge to happen. Local spring-fed ponds are down 2-3ft, and Lake Redman, York County's main water reservoir, is down 12-15ft. It's grim, folks.
Several months ago, I commissioned a "Real Estate Appraisal" to be done, by a local Commercial-Industrial Appraiser (York, PA) for the GC&N's 20-acres; 13.6ac of which I'd bought at $5,000/acre in 1990, and another adjoining 6.4ac which I'd purchased, under contract for the same $5,000/ac, in 1996. Total original investment: $100,000 for ag-zoned property. The value today: $780,000. Not bad, IMO, for 17yrs. I'm also expecting a "Business Valuation", by a local CPA firm (Hanover, PA), which will give me the total overall value of the business, including the real estate, which I've never had done, and which I have no idea of the bottom-line, net worth of my 17yr effort. I can't get through a day without being confronted by a list, of some sort. The go-to shorthand of pop culture, lists make it easy for writers to dispense with pesky paragraphs. Designed to spark debate, they entice readers with the sizzling promise of a "Top 10!" or a "Top 20!" If you're still thrilled by the language of lists (and I am), this site is a pure delight. Smart cookie Jamie Frater has taken it upon himself to come up with a colossal compendium of ordered items. Thankfully, his unique lists don't cover the same well-trod ground walked on by many rank-happy types before him. Mr Frater offers a diverse mix of lists that blend whimsy with the out-and-out weird. I was drawn-in by the mesmerizing "Top 10 Incredible Recordings", laughed at the "Top 15 Quotes of Prince Philip", and got grossed-out by the "Top 10 Disgusting Foods". As long as you avoid the food list, this prodigious site is perfect for a list-based lunch break. Perhaps a list of "Top 10 Ways to Waste Company Time" is in order? No way, as I own a company and carefully check my employees' work habits, BTW. Ha!
